Presented at the 2010 Razzies, Worst PICTURE of the Decade - Battlefield Earth accepted by original screenwriter, J.D. Shapiro. Video by Eileen and Rob, Edited by Rob
Now that's how to accept a Razzie. You've got to read Shapiro's article in The New York Post "I penned the suckiest movie ever - sorry!" The primary responsibility for the awfulness of the film lies with John Travolta, J.D. got fired for not agreeing with John's ideas. J.D. wrote 'The only time I saw the movie was at the premiere, which was one too many times.' & 'No way do you get any action by boldly going up to a woman and proclaiming, "I wrote Battlefield Earth!"
I've looked up the bios of the director and the screenwriters and this is the only movie they've done. So this movie screwed their careers but didn't seem to have an effect on the actors careers and the acting was one of unbearable aspects.
I would say that even the actors' careers were badly affected. Sure, Travolta is still getting work, but I am fairly certain this film eliminated him from being considered a bankable star. Barry Pepper's film career was torpedoed (but I hear he has had success in television and has an Emmy award). Forest Whitaker is about the only actor who managed to salvage a respectable film career after this movie, but I am sure Battlefield Earth sidelined him for a few years.
@ScottMana "Shame, the book is awesome. The movie is nothing like it." I agree, the book is one of my all time favourites. I love that in the second half you learn that the primary reason the aliens were able to be defeated was that their home planet had been taken over by a religious cult, remind you of anything. Poor old loony L Ron, I doubt he ever saw the irony. I'll read the book again, it's a corker for readers of sci fi, even the introduction is great.
Same here. I just saw it with a couple of friends & my brothers, & we all liked it. The special effects were really good, the costumes were really good too. It thought the story & the acting were very good as well. There's no way this is the worst movie of the decade. No way Lindsay Lohan movies are better than this LOL.
Now this is funny. Check out Travolta's Wikipedia entry under the Filmography heading. This should be a comprehensive and not selective filmography. Notice anything missing, especially for the year 2000? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Travolta#Filmography I imagine Travolta's PR manager is trying to rewrite (or is that erase?) history. Note that this is current for September 14, 2014.
