Sam's "too cool" to appreciate good pop melodies. I dont particularly like maroon 5 (their early stuff was better) and nickleback might be a meme band at this point,l, but some of their songs are damn catchy. You cant get caught up in trying to look cool if you wanna talk about musicianship.

HEY! Everclear "was" a great band. I'm talking about the true trio of Art, Craig, and Greg. I totally get how they could be brought up as corny 90s rock, but Art's lyrics truly spoke to me growing up. Actually look up what their hit songs were about, heroin overdoses of loved ones, growing up in the Santa Monica projects, parents fighting, nothing about their music was "bullshit filler", it was expression through music and it spoke to enough people to make them as famous as they were and why they are still remembered. I will still put on any of their albums from World of Noise to Slow Motion Daydream and remember why I love their music so much. Just saying, that's how I feel. Allen said I can say that as long as it's how I feel.
I agree. A runner up would be Korn, kind of marked the end of Grunge, and every fucking band started breaking out 7-8 string guitars and wearing terrible clothes. Fucking Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Staind, Kid Rock, Saliva, Orgy, Sevendust, Kittie...They all started wearing those stupid JNCO jeans, and having the bleached dreadlocks. Korn, Deftones, Slipknot and Linkin Park had some good tunes, but it resulted in so much dogshit to make it on the radio, and I'd argue that many of the radio rock is still stuck in the rut that resulted from the success of Korn.
I don't believe in the whole blaming a band for inspiring a lot of shitty bands (even though I hate nirvana). That's like blaming van halen for glam metal or meshuggah for djent. They didn't know they were gonna inspire garbage music.
@@EyeShotFirst Fortunately I was all grown up before these bands came into existence and wasn't exposed to them on the radio or anywhere else. They sound like the worst music anywhere, in all of history.
Sam Morill seems like an alright dude and all but I don't think in the hours I've listened to him on shows and podcasts that he's made me laugh a single time.
I don't think they were right about the songs they played both of those songs were from Smash, and then the album ixnay on the hombre, which had a few good songs on it I think it was after that album they started not taking themselves seriously

They were right about everything except the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The radio songs might be annoying but they are amazing. There's a reason why they've been around forever. I could watch them talk about bad bands all day. Great stuff.
“The Kids Aren’t Alright” is on Americana, so that album's not a total loss, and you’re not a man if you balk at “Hammerhead” off of Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace. That song's among their best.
Good call, 'cept for RadioHead. All of their radio hits are pretty much over-rated, 'cept for "Creep." However, their overall catalogue is awesome.. in the 90s, I wasn't into the whole whiny , slow ,unpredictable music that they had going.. I am not a bandwagon guy, and when OK computer came out, everybody loved it before they listened to it. I saw the bandwagon, and steered away, before giving it a listen. Years later in my middle twenties, I picked up Hail to the thief. Could be one of the greatest albums I've ever listened to. Thom Yorke is truly a genius, if you're not a little bit older, give it another listen. I still, however, have never listened to the album, Ok computer, after all these years, but Hail to the Thief is great.
I dunno. I liked pretty much all of the music mentioned. Am I supposed to be listening to Cardi B or one of the soundcloud rappers that I see once on the youtube featured page?The one's that all look and sound the same and after about a week disappear and I never see again? Music is over-saturated so much nowadays and everyone acts like they know all of the high-brow eclectic music when in all reality it's more trash than what they hate on.
These guys are killing certain bands for me. I never ever thought of some of these bands being horrible, it’s just what was popular at the time. It’s not like they are still trying to pump out the same shit. I love these segments though.
That Maroon 5 song is weak as shit. And am in full agreement of Sam's claim about Canadian artists. Nickelback is some by-the-numbers cheesy rock. Oh they TRY REAL HARD to be rockers, but that's how far their rock talent goes. Like most rock post-2000, it's derivative to what's come before rather than being inspired by what has come to *create something new.* The torch was passed and then put out by the corporatization (or consolidation, if you prefer) of major labels. I'll be a RHCP fan until I die. Not from the West coast either. Chili Peppers are solid.
all 4 of em went platinum multiple times, very well known internationally, and are household names for anybody ranging from late 20s to early/mid 40s. Not saying they are all great bands but their names hold weight. Especially Korn they consistently record & release music that charts.
Play anything in the world, then play Tool. Everything else sucks in comparison. Everything is speculative. I hate Maroon 5, but those dudes are mega rich from playing music & Adam Levine can get any woman on the planet. So I’m guessing he doesn’t care. Same for Nickelback, Sugar Ray, Smashmouth etc. They are TERRRIBLE, but somehow people like it. And they be rich.
Music is phenomenal but Maynards voice is too whiny for me. I liked his little part on the Deftones track "Passenger" but I can't do a full album of it.
Thomas Henesey also, their albums came out in 93, 96, 01, 06, & 19. So one time it took long, as tends to happen with bands once they start getting older. Side projects.
@@Weewoo12 If you look at the quality of all of the music, not just hits,its not confusing at all. Limp Bizcuit and Kid Rock have a few hits that suck and the rest of their music is worse.
ICP don't count because they got no radio play or mainstream attention. It is actually very impressive of them to be known worldwide without it. They do have some dog shit music but there are some pretty decent fun songs amongst the crap.
