leonie, you should read inkheart by cornelia funke! its a fantasy trilogy, but you can read just the first one and leave it at that. its about a girl whose dad has the ability to read characters and objects out of books, but the catch is that someone goes into the book instead. the pace is a bit slow, i feel like cornelia funke decided to make a book about how much she loves books, writing, reading and language and sprinkled in some plot as a treat. still, the pace does pick up and the writing is beautiful, so i dont think you'll mind too much. the author came out with a new book in the series this year, actually, even though the series was finished a long time ago, because she just loves the characters and the world too much. i havent read it yet and only reread the first one this year, but i still love it just ad much if not more than the first time i read it. anyway, it made me think of you and i hope you enjoy!!
@readingjoelle2735

Yes please! It is an absolut classic, I‘d strongly recommend reading the whole triology, though. I have recently reread them, and I was in awe how well it held up from my childhood memories. The characters, the writing, it is just perfection (at least in the original german, haven‘t read the english translated version).

I had not read Hazelwood before my sister mentioned "Check & Mate" to me at Christmas (I play chess), so I gave it a look and my god is it awful. Worst chess I've ever seen in a book, and the rivals-to-livers romance is so poorly executed... they're never rivals, and tall, muscular, tall, "bad boy" (we never see it, just are told about it), tall, secretly sensitive, tall Nolan spends all his scenes tall-ly simping over Mallory.

I just found your channel and I love it. Your opinions are based. I watched a girl totally loud and obsessed with dark romance ( which I can appreciate), but read nothing else. Wasn't for me. And another girl just reading (in her opinion) high literature and putting everyone down, who might enjoy something else here and there, like fantasy romance. So thank you, you are my perfect middle ground and I love your description of the books you read.

Hi from Groningen! I am currently reading "Moss Witch and Other Stories" by Sara Maitland and I think you would love it! It's a short story collection where the author, who's an academic herself, talked to all these different scientists about their research and based her stories on it. There's even an afterword by the scientist themselves. It's SO cool. I know you studied biology, like I did, and for someone in that field it's such an interesting read. I didn't click with all the stories, but the other ones were so worth it, Sara Maitland is a genius and deserves so much more recognition!

Leoni - if you’re feeling adventurous and want to try something new, I recommend Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan. It’s essentially a collection of illustrated short stories ruminating on human nature and our relationship with animals. These stories are pretty unique though in that they feature what I think is magical realism? It’s just very different basically and to me manage to capture these emotions and ideas that I didn’t know I had or didn’t know how to express. Shaun Tan is an Australian author known for his picture books - but these aren’t children’s picture books and are more just works of art with stories attached to them. He has two main ‘illustrated short story’ collections, of which Tales from the Inner City is one. The other one is Tales from Outer Suburbia but I think Tales from the Inner City is probably more accessible to international readers because I think Tales from Outer Suburbia requires a contextual understanding of Australia. Or you could also get Tales of Light and Dark, which I’m pretty sure is both these collections together. Anyway just thought I’d stick this recommendation in here since I’m on my Shaun Tan reread run lol

Leonie, have you heard of this new show called The Artful Dodger? It's a 'spin-off' of sorts of Charles Dickens' character Jack Dawkins, from his Oliver Twist novel. Jack was part of a group of thieves as a child, but grows up to become a doctor in the 1850s with some troubles with the law. It's a mini-series, only 8 episodes, but it's so much fun! It has a bit of that Six of Crows feelings where a group of misfits come together sometimes to do crime lol also some academic rivalry between him and the female lead - they're really not fond of each other at first but there's some forced proximity cause he's the only one willing to teach her how to become a surgeon (no I'm not trying to include as many of your favorite tropes in this description as I can to maybe convince you to watch it, what makes you think that?). I just finished it yesterday and it's the only thing on my brain right now XDIt's not the best thing you'll ever see, but I find the characters are so charismatic! If you ever get around to watch it, I'd loooove to know your thoughts on it.

A fantasy series i can really recommend is "the mirror visitor" by christelle dabos. It came out not too long ago and i personally really enjoyed it! It takes place in this magic world (its not like "oh there's a second world?" It's just the only world that exists) where, instead of being a round world, like ours, it has something similar to countries and every "country" is kind of just floating in the air and not in contact with the other ones. Also every tribe (there are "countries" with just one tribe and "countries" with a few more that often don't like each other) has a different kind of power. We follow our main character, a girl/woman (idk her age) who has to get married to a guy from another "country". In the beginning, she doesn't really understand anything that is going on, such as why she suddenly has to marry him or what is expected from her and he doesn't really answer her questions. But, as time goes by, she slowly starts to realise that she is part of a way bigger plan that not even her fiancé knew about. (I don't want to spoiler too much but it is a mix of mystery and saving the world) There is, of course, also a romance between her and her fiancé but it's not the main part of the series and it's also not like the plot only exists for the romance, instead certain things happen because they are getting closer and because they start to care about each other and i think that this was done very beautifully. Also both characters go through a lot of character development without completely losing their flaws. Now the books are pretty long (about 600 pages each) and there are four books in total so idk if you feel motivated enough to start it but there is always the option to not finish a series if you dont want to continue reading it. Also i know that many people didnt like the last book that much because it is pretty confusing with everything going on and all the things you find out but for me personally it wasn't really a problem. So yeah anyway this was my little rant about it and i hope it also sounds good to you!

First: very bummed about Immortal longings because I was really looking forward to it!! But thanks for the heads up! Second: “everyone is into it!” Doesn’t always mean it’ll be a good book/show/trend. In fact these days that more often than not means it isn’t worth my time. I usually use that reasoning as my red flag radar 🤣 but thank you for the speed reviews. Gave me some new books to watch out for and avoid!!

Honestly agreed with the mystery aspect of Belladonna. I could’ve done without it, (though I didn’t hate it) BUT I am a massive fan of shadow daddy romance and Belladonna is hands down one of my favourites (yes I’m a hades x persephone trope fan, what gave it away?😂)

I agree so much with The Left Hand of Darkness. Ursula has such amazing books, being the writer of my favorite novel of all time: The Dispossessed. I went into The Left Hand of Darkness looking for some of the thrill The Dispossessed left in me, but I was kinda disappointed
