Q and I just got back from a family vacation and wanted to share our experience about being vegan on a Royal Caribbean cruise! We review Royal Caribbean's new dedicated vegan menu in the main dining hall, as well as the other options onboard. Was it worth the price of a ticket considering we could only eat their plant based options? Watch and find out!

We just got back from a great vegan cruise! The cruise line is MSC. We were on the MSC Divina. The cruise is called The Holistic Holiday At Sea. There are tons of great speakers including plant based/vegan doctors and animal activists such as James Aspey. The food was great! There is a vegan buffet for breakfast and lunch - there are vegan options for the dinner buffet too but not as many. Mostly pizza and pasta. There are vegan dining rooms which are very nice! My only complaint is that some of the staff comes across very rude. Others were very friendly and helpful. All in all a great cruise. I’m ready to go again! 😁

I'm vegetarian and on my Oasis of the Seas cruise in December 2019 I tried the vegan menu. I agree that it was unremarkable, mostly deep-fried, and honestly not up to the level I was expecting. I suggest asking to look at the daily vegan menus for the entire week. I was shocked to see honey was included in the spring roll sauce, but I was assured this would be removed across the entire fleet. Sewage is separated by using a centrifuge and the solids are incinerated. The Solarium Cafe had a lot of vegan options including grilled vegetables and fruit. The Vitality Cafe has vegetable and fruit juices which they are glad to customize for you. I wish that I could do a fully vegan cruise like the Holistic at Sea cruise, but the cost is, unfortunately, double for single travelers.

Interesting!! Glad to know we were not alone in thinking it was unremarkable. 😄 Thanks for the tips about Solarium and Vitality cafe! We didn’t have a drink package so we didn’t try any of the juices. I’m sure they are nice though! Yes, completely agree about the price of the all vegan cruise! FYI I went on the vegan cruise years ago as a solo traveler and they put me with another solo woman so we didn't have to pay double. It was a great experience as a vegetarian at that time. The earlier you book it, the cheaper it is.

Just completed an 8 night cruise on jewel of the seas. Same line, different ships and some things were different than you describe. I didn’t have a vegan menu in the mdr- there was always a vegan option on the regular menu. No choices but I was always happy with it. My waiter always asked if I’d like to alter the meal in any way and made sure I knew they could whip me up something different. Also, the jewel windjammer food was always labeled, and usually had allergen info on it. I had a wonderful time, and finding a vegan lychee tart on the buffet was such a pleasant surprise! Oh wow good to know! This cruise was also end of 2019, so I was wondering how the options may have changed. My in-laws are going on a cruise in May so I’ll make sure to ask them to check out what’s vegan at windjammer! Sounds like you had great options. 😀😀

Amazing video / you two are absolutely wicked together - you are so funny together! I went on oasis of the seas and went to the ‘healthy cafe’ near the solarium every day . But I would as you said, like to go on a pure vegan cruise , but after corona I’m not 100% on whether I would do another one .....🤨 but was great to watch you two ❤️🇬🇧

Hahaha thanks!! 🙏 Oooo yes, the healthy cafe. I think we might have had something like that next to the gym. Agree about a cruise post-Corona! Might be a while before I go on another one. Also, doing a bit more research, it doesn't seem the vegan cruises are any more eco-friendly, unfortunately. 😕 Maybe it's just not meant to be for me to do another one. 😂😂

Very usefull infos! I've been to 2 cruises when I wasn't vegan, but It looks like by you guys recent experience, It's not hard, maybe a little tricky at the small cities off the ship. And I love pasta btw.

Yea we found it was pretty easy actually ... definitely just ask a lot of questions. 😄And if you love pasta you’ll be set! 😆 The cities were a bit more difficult but we did find a couple vegan restaurants while we were exploring! Thank you so much for this thorough review with great footage of the food and menus! I wonder who was in charge of making those vegan menus. It looks like some of it is made by people who have never cooked vegan food before and are just slapping some veggies together with no thought to it being satisfying or even enough calories to fill a person up. Still better than nothing on most cruises though! Personally I'm pretty uncomfortable asking for help or making special requests so it's really helpful to have the menu.

Organized Confetti 😂😂 very true!!! I don’t think they consulted any vegans when making the menu. Some items were good, but some definitely had room for improvement! But just the fact that they had a “vegan menu” made me feel like they do care and are working hard to make sure there are vegan options... which is so awesome! 😄🌱 I didn’t feel it was necessary to ask too much about the options personally, so don’t worry too much if you’re uncomfortable with that. 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed the review!! Well a big part of the problem is that you're not a priority because people like you are the absolute exception and you're not willing to pay what it would cost to really accommodate you. Because you would be screaming bloody murder if you had to pay a 30% vegan surcharge on your cruise.

Wow that is really cool. I remembered some type of main dining hall event every day on my cruises but it seems like it wasn’t unlimited. For you you said it was which I would’ve loved but it was kind a like you chose your three-course meal and you could only do it once per day

Well... truthfully, it depends on your server. Some of them might give you weird looks if you order off the entire menu (it’s A LOT of food)... but every time we did, we also ate it all... so we didn’t feel guilty about wasting food or anything like that. Granted it was also split between the two of us so that made it a bit easier to finish it all! 😆😆 But yes, you can choose to eat everything that’s on the vegan menu, if you wish! It is only once per day though. Only for dinner. 😁

I actually just watched a documentary on RC and environmental concerns about dumping garbage, sewer etc in the middle of the ocean but RC invested in new filtering systems that “reduce” dumping waste. It’s on Amazon Prime. Should check it out. I am vegan and wondering how much vegan friendly foods RC served so your video was great and informative 🥰

Thanks for posting this content. I recently went on two Royal Caribbean cruises (Anthem & Odyssey) in Dec 2021. I was hoping to continue my vegan transition journey of 2 months. I didn’t like the vegan menus as much in My Time Dining so they accommodated me by adding my favorite vegan Indian food choices for the rest of the 6 days! I ate vegan 98% of the time because i may have eaten a delicious light desert and had creamer in my coffee once! :LOL All in all, i ate so healthy and was greatly satisfied with my overall experience.

Thanks so much for all the tips! Personally, I'd be happy with all the veg options you listed on this cruise because they're what I usually ate at all the Vegas buffets anyway 😂. You're right about the negative environmental impacts of cruise ships though. There are vegan cruises in Florida and the food is amazingly gourmet but they don't have it all the time, or many different routes, and still have to rent out the use of a regularly polluting commercial ship. But with that said, I'm quite tempted to take advantage of the many cruise lines we regularly have here in Hawai'i as I've never been on one so yeah, maybe, just once 🌺.

I hope in the future vegan cruises do more to implement eco practices. But mainly I am glad that they are taking vegan diet into consideration now and that there are decent options for us onboard. 😊

@@LetsEatPlants Yes, thank you, pre-pandemic several cruise ships literally docked about a mile from where I live. Everytime I drove by, they were always very tempting 😀. However, I was really saving for the vegan cruise in Florida but, logistically, that just hasn't worked out. I checked on cruise ships environmental report card after your video here and I'm rather surprised to see that Disney has the highest ranking! What have you found and which cruises will you guys consider in the future? 🌺

I feel like when I did the research before I had similar findings... but now it's been so long I can't remember for sure. 😅 I don't think we'll go on a cruise for a while... but if we ever go on another, we will have to do some extensive research. (And if we do end up going I"m sure we'll make a vid about it. 😄) I would be curious to know which one you end up choosing if you go! 🌱😊

As for other cruise lines, not sure what we can do to force them into making greener choices when it's been over a decade since the alarms were raised? Doing my first cruise next April (on RC Anthem) and I hope by then they will at least have vegan cheese for pizza and vegan ice cream or sorbet at the complimentary restaurants. 🤞Also, an Impossible Burger would be great too.

Needing an allergy and vegan friendly menu has put me off on traveling. We don't drink alcohol or party either. I really want to relax and go to Jamaica. Any suggestions for a future trip?

Oh I see! Well a cruise definitely would have options for you. They were very accommodating when we were there, and that was 3 years ago already! Their vegan options have hopefully even improved since then. 😄 They're definitely very careful about allergies as well, and alcohol you wouldn't have to worry about since it's a separate purchase and not included in the price of your cruise. I haven't been to Jamaica, but I've heard there are some vegan all-inclusives there! That might be another option. 😊

Went on the Anthem of the seas in May this year. My wife is vegetarian and it was a nightmare. Lack of labelling in the windjammer. Poor choice, cross contamination (bits of meat in the vegetarian food) We spoke to a chef in the Windjammer and we basically were told to pick the vegetables out of the egg based vegetarian lasagna. Was a real shame as we have been on many Royal Caribbeam cruises pre covid and they were superb.

I think it was around $2400 for the 2 of us? Not including gratuities, etc. that you have to pay once on the ship. 😊

I experienced exactly the same. So disappointed they were not accomadating enough or prepared. The food was disappointing. I just got back on Thursday. Several years later, the same situation.

On a Royal Caribbean ship right now and they have done away with the dedicated vegan menus. There are also no vegan lunch options in the main dining room or the buffet. It’s plain awful.

Unfortunately chefs who do cooking on a mass , industrial or I don’t know institutional volumes really are t great at either coming up with creative and satisfying dishes for any special diets , but especially vegans. Sorry the main dining room was so uninspiring. I saw that if you are kosher they actually order your food in frozen meals from a caterer so you’re never eating fresh food. I’m not sure but I think that’s just because there so many rules about cooking kosher food that doesn’t really have to do with the food, but more so on it being blessed or the dishes it’s served in or the pots and pans.

It's not really even that hard. Buffets can have items to make a bowl. Grains, potatoes, various veggies, salad greens, sauces to dribble over it. Good to go! But it's like cooks don't know what to do without slapping meat and cheese onto a dish. Glad to see things are starting to change, they are trying... I guess.
