i have 4 starlinks on me and 1 of them is gen 3. last evening was very bad weather and the gen 2s are all out of connection, yet the gen 3 still has a fair bit of connection. to me it looks like they really focus the gen 3 on its reception and sacrifice every other aspect that previously exist on gen 2. even the good packaging is now no more!

Never place a mesh router in the room itself where you want a better signal. Place the mesh router in between the location of the first router and the location where you want to use the signal of the mesh router. Check the signal at the location of the mesh router. It must be of a good quality. Sometimes it is hindered by things like mirrors or aquariums.

Actually, to make a good mesh network, you should place many mesh routers all over the place. Like the name says, make a mesh of routers. That way the mesh magic actually works. Otherwise it‘s just a simple range extener. But yes, don‘t place the range extender outside the range of the router, that is pointless.

3:25 That ladder angle is dangerously too shallow, even if it was rigidly braced at the base (not shown). The safe ladder angle for that type is with you standing vertically, the ladder should meet your hands outstretched in front of you. Subd, I just got Starlink, ordered May 12th, 2024, and arrived May 29th. I have to say for anyone in the north, Starlink is faster than cable as most cable companies restrict your speeds horribly, so if you have $600 kicking around, it will pay for itself as it's $60 a month cheaper than my local cable internet. Games are fast enough, movies are 100 times faster, work sad it's faster but w/e Great video and thanks for the info, and they shipped me an old model that I don't mind, kinda cool that it seeks signal itself

I had an old style sattelite internet, where my other option was dialup, or over $50K to have DSL run to the house. We moved and the entire city has fiber from the power company with minimum 250 M Bit connectoin synchrinous (they market it as 300MBit) for $50/mo and no MByte limit. It normally gets near that with Speedtest and I am oh so greatful. (They offer higher teers for more money, but the 250Mbit version does what we need.) ... Other companies are available, but the power company is the cheapest and good and reliable service, and they don't market our usage data.

I think you’re missing one aspect. The non motorized dish while it’s larger and has a larger field a view it’s 100% fixed. Meaning if you have like we had a few months ago near hurricane force downwind over 100 miles per hour and the dish sifts you would have to climb to top of house to fix it. Also I know mine occasionally shifts slightly to pick a better signal. I think the fixed is better for a person with an easily accessible location to move it if needed.

As a starlink installer I just installed my first gen 3. These comments echo my main concerns, gen 2 always finds the best signal. This took me forever to install, I thought the move was because its cheaper but that is not the case. I don't understand why starlink would go backwards in technology? I have solar panels on my roof and would need to know the watts to run the system, so I could buy an inverter. I also would need to be able to shut down when not in use. If your son is gaming on a pc/console and wants low ping, use a cable, wi-fi will always have horrible ping.

Your friend, Eliana Sheriff (Ellie In Space), ordered one for portable use to live stream report from Star Base. Is the actuated version better for that? Or, is the actuated one for RVs, etc?

Have a guy coming out to install this next week in north GA. 180 Mbps would be amazing cus I only get 10 Mbps (on a good day) with DSL. Fiber is an option.......if I'm willing to pay 10k for them to run it down the driveway.

Do you know anything about a setup fee to get your account going? I was looking up reviews on best buy and someone said you need to pay $200 to setup your starlink account?

If I needed to extend the cable indoors, could I simply couple the end that's inside the house to a regular ethernet cable?

Thats my question, if its an ethernet cable why cant i just use exsisting Exterior rated ethernet cable, i cant imagine it being any different, copper is copper, if its Shielded cable i should just be able to unplug my old equipment and install new starlink.

There are three trees on one side of my house that are much taller than the house. Would they block the signal?

Yes. Most likely. It does make a difference what direction they are located. If they are to the north of your house, probably good. Anywhere south is almost always bad.

I was really close to ordering the RV version but then the monthly price went from $135 for either RV or mobile, to $150 and $200 monthly, which killed the entire prospect at least for me anyway

Instead of gaming why isn't your son helping you install the new system? I hate to see old farts on a very tall leader - me included. That said, thanks for this timely video. We're building a new house in the Colorado mountains and have been looking around for internet service. I definitely need to buy a setup and have the electrician pop this in before we insulate and drywall.

I missed the prices. Monthly cost of service for unlimited internet after all fees and taxes, cost of all parts needed for first time service, any other needed costs. I heard the dish costs $500 or more up front.,

dont really see point with the mesh wifi thing. You cant really build a network with 1 + 1 pc. Better to buy your own and build your mesh properly

Great video. Why Starlink vs. local internet? In Aiken, I get internet only (AT&T) for $60 a month, which I think is about half of Starlink, and it has much faster speeds. So, curious why Starlink. I would think in the Athens area you would have access to a cable internet-only subscription. Have a very Happy New Year! Looking forward to your content this year. p.s. Yup. Can feel your pain. I also have put my foot thru the ceiling under similar circumstances. Haha.

It's a matter of application. Starlink isn't for everyone. Whare I live and how I use it, it's brilliant. On a camper or on my boat. The other choices are slim & very expensive, such as a satellite phone with horrible speeds. Cheers from Northern California!!

Starlink is absolutely NOT designed for urban areas with fiber optics or cable internet. I think John is just buying those things for test and content creation.
@mobiuscoreindustries
@mobiuscoreindustries 9 месяцев назад
Specifically John is buying it for testing purposes as well as as a backup in case primary connection fails Starlink specifically markets 2 areas. The first is the "forgotten" areas of many countries and even entire states that are left with extremely expensive and poor quality networks. Often needing to rely either on satellite connectivity (which is very expensive and extremely bad) or old coax (which is still bad but less expensive). Starlink directly competes with these by actually providing usable network speeds in places where you may have a network so slow it's not even suitable for watching a video. And the second is roaming connectivity. Starlink works on moving platforms, even quickly moving and unstable platforms like cars, planes, boats (and rockets!). Starlink for cruise liners and other boats has been TREMENDOUSLY successful, and planes likely to follow. And of course dishes on the top of mobile homes and trailers for those that are spending time in those. Core upgrades with the V2 laser interlinks will likely bring connectivity speeds to similar speeds as fibre optic internet, perhaps slightly slower. It will still lose our to urban areas, but may just be what the competitive market needs to kick stagnant cable networks into gear. And finally, there is the developing defense sector. spaceX really kicked the door open with Ukraine, showing starlink to be a jam/hack resistant, hard to trace, hard to strike, easy to use, roaming and low power capable terminal for general communication and coordination. And despite some slight problems regarding regional locks and the DoD being lethargic fuck baskets, blew various holes into the sides of the Russian fleet using starlink controlled naval drones. Even managing some truly awesome feats like striking a Russian vessel underway in the middle of a storm. Starshield is the military dedicated offering for Starlink, and the US has decided to be the first to invest into their own constellation. I am sure many more will follow. So the TLDR starlink has quite a lot of capability gaps to fill, and is going to be growing in both scale and capabilities.
