I've tested kid crafts and kits but what if we shake it up a little and test one made for adults and distributed by an actual handcrafted provision supplier? (ie. the people how sell us ingredients and equipment) We'll see how we (and my cat Gravy) like the results.

I literally save money just by opening up a tab in my browser via their link. I have already received a check from them within the first month so I just thought I would let you guys know about this since we soap makers and DIYers buy so much online! Plus, it's free! Yippee! :D

As much as I ❤ Brambleberry, Their kits are overly priced. I'm sure the kits are geared toward the hobbyist and not professional business end of the spectrum. As a business owner myself, a 4oz candle for 11 bucks would sit on my shelf for a eternity as the same size goes for 2.99 to 5.99 here in my city. That's just my take. Brambleberry is a fabulous company to purchase from, but this kit... price just isn't right.

A note: The wax should reach 185F before you add the fragrance. That way the fragrance actually bonds with the wax better. Also, the temp of the wax *when you pour* makes a BIG difference regarding getting sinkholes and glass adhesion.

@@VictorianRabbit3456 I pour most of my soy wax at around 140F. That's a good bet. But not always. You kind of have to do trial and error. Even the weather will affect your outcome. So will the shape of your jar. And the place you get it may or may not tell you anything useful. I had to do my own research and development, believe me. I buy wax 500-600 lbs at a time now. LOL

See thats the big issue I have with all these "kits" in general. They don't really go much into detail about the do's and don'ts of making the product. Its kinda like (say, with candles), "Step 1: Melt wax Step 2: Pour in to jar Step 3: Leave it sit ... " When in fact, wax needs to be melted to a certain degree, fragrance added at a certain degree, and poured at a certain degree, etc.

I love that you did a more professional kit, and I would personally prefer to see more of those vs a kids kit. I don't have kids or am around any, and with those kids kits I don't have any expectations that they would have a comparable quality to a professional one (I feel as though they're made more for the act of learning how something is done and family time than having an actual quality product.). But with a professional kit I would be more likely to buy and try it since it's marketed as essentially being able to diy at home and it being just as good as buying a company made product.
@Arya-is4cv
@Arya-is4cv 4 года назад
hmm, to be honest, (yes this is a year later) with the kids kits that work out well, I feel like they're more cost-effective compared to professional kits, so long as they're not more 'gimmick' than product. that said, I'm looking at buying the raw product from these kits anyway, as brambleberry kits are ridiculous even compared to their own raw product prices
@michealpersicko9531
@michealpersicko9531 3 года назад
@@Arya-is4cv Yeah well bear in mind that they charge free shipping to anywhere in the US so i'm pretty sure a good chunk of that is to pay for the drivers and the expense of doing free shipping across a country as big as the US. IDK it's hard to tell but i'm almost certain that the "free shipping" is bullshit and it's just a way to jack prices.

I buy soy wax by the 20 lb box, wicks by the 100, metal jars on amazon by the dozen and fragrance in at least 8 oz bottles. I don't spend anywhere near that much to make candles.

I bought the items individually, found a coupon code, and should be able to make at least 8 4oz candles for around $4 a piece. Just thought I'd share in case anyone wanted to make these, but didn't want to spend that much per candle.

@@sandraand6690 I just clicked on the link that Katie provided, which brought me to the brambleberry page where the set is sold. I think my biggest cons for this kit would be the price and the fact that you have to cut the labels out. I feel like for the price, they could have done that extra step. As a scrapbooker (or at least used to) I might have access to a circle punch about that size (still think they could have sent them pre-punched/pre-cut). Also they could have included twine or cording as well. Pros would be that you don't have to weigh anything, it's soy-based wax, wood wicks, glass jars with air-tight lids, and you pretty much have everything that's needed (minus about three things - the container to melt the wax in, a spoon to mix, and the twine). I like the professional kits, since I'm more likely to buy them, but this is one I'll pass on. I honestly don't know too many who love/burn candles.

The wooden wicks are always tricky to get in the holder. I still glue mine into the bottom so they don't move when I am pouring. With glass jars you can also heat the jars up in a low oven for a few minutes that helps them cool slower too. I totally agree the labels should peel. Pretty cool kit. Thank you for testing this!

Sin City Soap and Candles I like to melt enough to put a very shallow layer in the bottom of my candle containers and then place my wick in the bottom. Let that cool enough to take a hold, but not so firmly that it creates a separation or obviously layering. (Unless that's what I'm after, Lol). And then melt and pour the rest of my wax. Xoxo

Canada post is INSANW on shipping. Anything. Anywhere. I, too, live in canada, and avoid using Canada Post whenever possible! Granted USPS used to be fantastic when ordering across the border, oftentimes "customs brokerafe" fees just didn't get charged🤷‍♀️ no skin off my nose since I KNIW it's literally pushing the box or envelope across a magic marker line drawn on the formica counter.😉 yeah, courtesy of working for a company that did a LOT of shopping, both intra, and inter nationally, you get to speak with a lot of various agents so often they know you by voice!🤗🤗😘adored them all, some would chitchat, others, mind your ups and as very carefully!(seen look and starched collar so high and tight, you just KNEW they didnt swallow anything on the job! Especially didn't chew gum, that would produce too much spit. Which then would need to be swallowed or spat out...🤪

I think a good mix of both kids and professional kits would be nice. I have lots of littles in my life who want all these slimeygoop, lipbalm, nail polish, bath bomb, soap, etc. kits and its nice to see some of them being done to get an opinion. However, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't have children in their lives who would appreciate a more professional option because they are more likely to be purchasing those. I, personally, would enjoy seeing both. You do a great job of making relevant content that speaks to everyone in some capacity or another, and I appreciate the thought and effort you put into your channel. Cheers, Duchess! Keep on keepin' on :)

Thank you for taking the time to review this product, I value your opinion. Yes, I believe the draw back is the cost, I would like to make the candles but not sure it would be worth the price. I like the wooden wicks. I am shocked at how wonderfully Gravy was able to put his thoughts into words, and type it, talented cat.

More professional kits please! No kids so I'm not interested in those, but I am entertained by your vids of them. I'm always leery of the kits as I don't want to end up with a bunch of extra junk I won't/cannot use. I liked this one because there was very little left over. I agree about the labels and tags. As a professional, I'm always looking for precision labeling. Handcutting those leaves little chance for them to look sharp. Huge fail right there, IMO. No twine wasn't so bad, because the round tags could have gone on the outside of gift packaging, as well as displayed around the neck of the candle. But two feet of twine is just pennies in such a pricy box, probably should have been included. Thank you for another informative opinion piece. Cheryl Taber, Tryst Falls Soap Co

First of all, I loved this honest, calm and professional review. Really cool, and I'd be interested to see more of those! Now to the kit itself: I don't really mind the labels not being pre-punched, the twine thing is not a huge problem imho, but the stickers being one peelable sheet seems kind of annoying to me, too, you could easily be mislead to try and peel away the entire bottom layer before cutting the sheet up, and then what? (although I guess isntructions would say otherwise) However, I have another problem with this kit: it just does not seem very interesting to me. The only thing that makes this different from buying four candles is that you have to mix the fragrance into the wax and then pour. There's not much excitement in that for me. I'd love to see a slightly more complicated kit with space for variation, maybe with two colours, two or three different scents to experiment with, more decoration or different labels, something like that. Something that will make the candles you made unique. For 44 dollars, I probably wouldn't buy this - not because I think it's not worth it, but because I wouldn't really enjoy making the candles.
@mom2mmpt

I agree. I think I might have been able to swallow the $44 if there was a variety of options within the kit itself, such as different scents, colors, etc.

First off,. I think you're fab, Katie -- love your videos, you inspire so many, including me! If you don't mind, I'd like to offer a few pointers. The temperature of the wax must be a minimum of 185 before adding the fragrance - this is important. There is absolutely no reason to add your wooden wick before you've poured the wax and NEVER EVER cut/trip the wick before the wax has solidified. Pour the wax, wait a minute or two and then drop your wooden wick, center and leave or use a wick sticker, just like you would with a cotton wick. Surrounding the candles with paper inside a box worries me. Please don't do this, and trust me this does absolutely nothing to help the candle. Please remember you are putting the paper up against glass filled with wax that is at 185 degrees. If it's winter, make sure your kitchen is warm and if you are worried about adhesion to the glass, put your glass on a cookie sheet put them in the oven while your melting wax, etc. Pouring wax into a warm jar is easier and better than the box route. Lastly, candle newbies seem to think that if their candles do not look perfect on top they did something wrong, and maybe they did, but, trust me, candles don't finish perfectly every time for many reasons -- but forget the hair dryer, use a heat gun for a second and every candle you make will be smooth on top. Happy candle making!

For starters, I love your videos, especially the kit reviews. Everything I say is in light humor and not ment to be mean or harm anyone. So I watching as Katie was explaining how to get the candles to cool the best and was thinking, "Man she must of had a lot of coffee today," and then remembered I had playback speed on x1.25 because I was watching a rather boring, slow speaking youtuber before hand. Nevertheless I still enjoyed the first half of the video under the impression Katie was very hyped up on something. 😂

The Great 2020 Rewatch continues onwards :) I'd love to see more of these - I watch alot of Nerecrafter and her reviews, but I'm genuinely curious about those marketed towards a more mature market!

Thanks for the testing video. It's always helpful to get the opinions of the professionals! I agree the kit is expensive but sometimes for the first time it's not a bad way to find out if you like doing it! I you video I will watch!

I've just started making candles so this was a great video since I've been doing tests and research to learn more about the candle market. Yes! Please test other kits, not just kids stuff.

I love this content so much!!! You are so beautiful and funny and just make my whole day with any content you produce! I love these kit video and I have also wanted to make my own soap, candles, bath bombs etc. but have always been too scared of poor outcomes haha. So in conclusion thank you for allowing me to watch you do things I am too scared to do ❤️

Loved this video. I would be happy to see more candle-making videos from you, as well as perfume, chapstick, and whatever else you feel like making. I also like that you ordered this kit online so if I like it, I can order it myself to try.

Hey Katie! I came across your channel after seeing a gorgeous thumbnail for a soap. I can't recall which it was, but it made my artistic brain want to try making soap too! But not just any soap.... soap sculptures. It was never something I considered until I came across your channel. I am making sculptures that I am going to cast in silicone, fill with soap and sell. I watch you almost exclusively as a soap artist, as I feel you are very honest and sincere in your motivations for sharing your ideas and designs with the world! I just wanted to say a quick thank you for the entertainment, inspiration and guidance! I love how you did a candle kit, as I'd like to use the same molds I am making for candles too! While the kits might not save you any money doing it yourself, it can be a gateway to doing it yourself. Kind of like a "Candle tutorial". I would love to see you try more of these kits for soap, candles or otherwise! Maybe some sugar or resin ones next?

Hi Katie' I Love when you test out those kits ! I used to handcraft candles all the time. Lover of arts n crafts for myself and my grown up Chrildren are into their own thing basically, even though I still advocate arts and hobbies to them. Anyway, Great 'gig' you got going on there, I Love both consumer reviews n Crafts ! FUN. I've wanted to produce art kits geared towards Children myself a while back. And I travel too much to do Crafts myself. I am StiLL wanting to make soap finally. I Love watching your videos, its kinda meditative and calming, when you make your soaps, kinda like a cooking show, very Cool Livelyhood !!!!!! So nice to see a nice bubbly Genuine person out there. So great to see it possible for you - to able to do something great, prosper, in that what you enjoy and makes you happy. You have kept me inspired ! The Very Best WeLL Wishes to you ALL . Thanks, keep it coming ))) +💜

Not having the tags pre cut is very unfortunate. Especially the circles. By hand, a circle never cuts perfectly. Sir Gravy is awesome 🐱💖 Adult craft kits for me! LOve the video. 🌺

I would loveeeee for this to be a monthly series!! Even just BB kit reviews would be awesome! It would be insanely good publicity for any suppliers to provide you things to review at this point. I’ve ordered from MANY companies (plus paid the exchange and insane shipping 🇨🇦) because I’ve seen you use them with stunning results. 👌🏼😍
