In this review video I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the new flagship helmet from Giro. This helmet features their all-new MIPS Spherical protection system, Roc Loc 5 Plus retaining system and improved vents for cooling. I’ve spent some time testing this out on a few rides and I think I have some insight to give for this new $350 helmet. Let me know below if you have any questions!

I have both, the MIPS in the Synth is just a piece of 1mm (if that) plastic which is retained by a plastic rivet and is primitive at best. I prefer the vent design on the Synth but that is just double side taped and the end of the sweep on mine started to show signs of peeling within days of use. I think GIRO have addressed many issues we probably aren't aware of with the Aether. My Oakley Sutro and POCs fit fine in both helmets however for me the added rubber pieces on the Aether give a little more confidence that my glasses are safe when out of view. Both are great helmets and supposed it's down to preference, for me it's the Aether becuase of the more robust MIPS alone.............

haveagoharry all good info. Thanks for sharing. Yeah I agree with you, the Aether does seem more robust. I was on the fence but I’ve decided to keep it. I’ve been really liking it the more I’ve been using it also, maybe a little more comfortable for me

If you crash and the the area below the "top" shell hits the ground, then there's no slipping of the 2 layers happening and your head will take the full rotational impact?

Yeah, that’s right. But it would be hard to do that. The base/bottom shell that is exposed is a only very small area on the sides and rear.

Noticed any issues with your sunglasses? I saw a couple reviews that mention it. Any issues with the workmanship at the front of the helmet? Thinking of picking up with white/silver.

Hey Jim, yeah, now that you mention it. I didn't notice it earlier, but my sunglasses arms rest on the retainer system, not in an ideal spot. For the workmanship, also yes, now that you mention it. The retainer system has a few points of adjustment, one of the points in the rear is molded into the helmet and brittle plastic. On mine, when I was adjusting it, it broke. I contacted customer service about it and they sent me a new helmet. All that said, its still a great helmet that I am happy with, but there is some room for improvement for the next generation. Also, the white silver is a good choice. I think that's the best looking colorway at the moment

@@cyclistpete2090 got mine this past Tuesday and had 3 rides with it now. I like the helmet. Seems to be alight with my Oakley’s. We’ll see how it stands up. It’s nice to know they stood behind their product. Happy with it so far. Will be interesting to see how nice the venting is in hotter weather. Should be better than my prior Giro.

Hi Pete, you don't mention it in your review. But i just bought one and after my first ride i felt pressure on my forehead. Down pressure on my eyes. A look around internet i saw more riders with the same issue. Perhaps i have to adjust the helmet, have you done some adjustment before hand? Kind regards, Paul

paul esther hey Paul. I found the best adjustment for me is to have the main inner snaps at the innermost position. And the rear sides adjustments at the middle setting. I haven’t noticed any pressure on my forehead with it adjusted like this. Hope this helps!

That extra point of adjustment shown in this vid is the weakest point of this helmet. Breaks fairly easily but fear not, RocLoc 5 is available aftermarket for about 10 euros/dollars. I replaced mine already. Other than that, excellent helmet.

Synthe, they said it aero, NOPE! Get Trenta carbon 3k, better in air flow, less hot, and aerodynamic better than most tri helmet bike... and light-weight.
