I worked on 4 different Patterson rigs and I learned a very valuable lesson, you're as good of a hand as those who train you. It wasn't until I went to a different rig that I realized those who broke me out were completely incompetent.
Thats right , I started working floors after 20 years oil and gas .. I first worked floors offshore with a huge standard Derrick within 6 years I worked on 2 off- shore drill rig a standard and a boot strap Derrick s 4 onshore a supersingle a A leg truck mounted double ,and a Million And half ton A leg compound rig ,, and walker rig stoneham drilling rig 18 .... ! Left offshore break out rig to a double onshore no iron roughneck and I would learn to throw tongs but at first I was pathetic and I almost fired myself ,, but I would stay as a roustabout and when I went to a Frank's explorer drilling shallow gas well with a power swivel I was hired to run loader but would be the 3rd hand on floor when tripping and I would become very good at the rig tongs I was trained by 19 yo gentleman T.parker and a 21 yo Billy Bad ass by the Tyler and I was 44 yo and I was trained very well by these guys on working floors I
I think that’s the first thing every hand ever set foot off the rig he broke out on realizes the second his old pushers boot comes off his neck😉😂 I know it was mine! Went right from “Did I do good?” To “Hell…I was the only chain throwing, pipe tripping hand on that pig. I basically trained myself. They were just about to move me to motors when they laid us off too. Damn economy…” 😂😂😂
Yup. Likely illegal to video. As phones are not intrinsically safe. Can cause fires. Right near the well bore. This should actually be written up. However the rig manager, or company rep is likely taking the video.
To everyone offended by the title calling the newbie "worthless": anyone who has been a part of a crew of guys doing tough work will tell you that ribbing each other is part of the glue that holds the group together. Everyone rides the shit out of each other. It makes the day go quicker and the laughs provide a bit of relief from the ball busting work. At the end of the day everyone has each other's back. I'm stuck working in an office now after spending 20+ years in construction crews. I miss those days and those guys.
It is necessary to be hard on newbies especially in this realm of work. If they are being properly trained it is all worth it. Everyone will appreciate it.
@@brucecook4240 that's not how it works out here. The guy knows what he is doing he is developing muscle memory to become automatic. Trust me worthless is among the nicer things you get called.
American Coca-Cola Company prospectors drilling for raw Fanta Orange concentrate in the year 2013 after high demand left in the wake of MIddle Eastern instability.
I'm a driller on an AC amphion rig, and from slips in to slips out we make up a full stand in under 2 1/2 minutes , and we do it safely enough that the connections looks kinda boring, lol. When I used to roughneck back in the day on a kelly rig, we would do a connection in under a minute. These guys are brutal
Honestly I cant tell who the one that is worthless in the video is, it looks like their all working trying to get a job done, more said than many people in the US, that don't know what real work is
To be honest, every crew I've seen that thought they were fast were actually the slower ones in the business. The good crews came onto a job, worked smoothly, and managed to stay in perfect sync the whole day with hardly a word between them.
I think everyone is taking the title too literal, Im sure as they are roughnecks worthless in their world is a term of endearment. Nothing but hardworking guys in the video 💪
I have no idea what is going on here, but I can't stop watching these videos. Okay back to work now, although my work hardly sounds like work compared to this work. Fuck...
I was a worthless roughneck at 19 by the i was 26 i was going places. I believe if these young men work hard stick it out they will climb the ladder. Just gotta pay attention and get it in.
He showed up for work and is working ! Worthless would be a no show and do nothing . Besides Rough necks even on a slow day are working hard ! they dont call them rough rough necks for nothing Respect ! 🇺🇲🇺🇲
Awesome when y’all on the same page and don’t take things like connection times super seriously! I hate that shit, it’s like speeding up to a red light! Good job fellas I can feel the love. That rig reminds me of an ol girl up here called the fox! Real mans rig!
Thats about the Smoothest and fastest Connection that could be. Well done 👍👍. Driller might could of taken more weight off for the Chain to pull snug. I take that back, the Chain hand didnt pull enough slack out to pull the Chain all the way, the Lead Tongs were pulled in ad far as they could do. Blame the Chain Hand 😂. Its the Driller and Chain Hand ...... S**t Connection. Damn, How many of those connections ive made working my way uo from Motor Man to Driller 😮
Did they get the job done? Looks like they worked at a good pace and more importantly a safe pace. Fast work = sloppy work or worse injury or death. So being a rook u work at a safe pace then build it up as you get better and more efficiant.
Any old Roughnecks from 1978 to 83 Odessa, Tom brown rig 20 rig 2 , rig 24 , Hillin Drilling Rig 12 , Michigan 1984 Encore & Score rig 5, or Cactus drilling rig 11 . I broke out on Rig 20 Sep 1978 Mike England was my driller Tool pusher Bobby Williams. his little Brother was Jackie Williams started pushing when i become a driller. I seen Jackie 1983 Gulf company man before I left Odessa Tx
@@snattler They had 2 doubles and 3 Triples when I left Texas but I know they was going to buy rigs that was made in 1980 that never got to drill before everything shut down in 86 Odessa turned into a ghost town pop had hit 70,000 by 82 by 86 pop 8000 the boom was over .
2:12 I'm not even a rough neck but I've seen a lot of rough neck videos that I immediately noticed that they missed a step when they were supposed to brush that sealer material onto the threads before making the connection lol.
pipe dope, I work on a sonic rig and it's not always necessary, sometimes threads already have enough dope or it won't be too difficult to break the connection
We all start from somewhere, Don’t be a hypocrite and bring others downs. Be that guy who help them be successful at the job and maybe in life with tips.
I'd say the worm driller is the worthless one, breaking out with the rotary will wipe out the whole floor crew and it's really hard on the pipe. I f he would slack off with the blocks properly the chain would have made it up, he had plenty of wraps.
Melón malone I'm 19 trying to get into the oil fields in Odessa, what companies should I apply to and what positions would they be under. Need a job asap and love hard work thanks
Rig welder is world's most dangerous job...one of the only jobs where your required to flip a sheild down cutting off use of your eyes, an half your hearing, plus having to rely on guys around you to keep u safe,. an that's the above water part...God bless
Driller for sure. That Kelly wasn't making up because he never slacked off while making it up. I'm sure he had some tension on those threads from the make up. Also, how long does it take to break and torque a connection
I used to work the rigs too. I really don’t see where that roughneck did anything wrong. It’s a little slower paced today. Maybe the way it should have been in the days I started. He’s learning the job properly.
I'm Not-Tarded doubt it. Most likely just a bum that chooses to sit back and watch other people do the job he's getting paid to do. I give it a month before he's fired
My dad is a toolpusher I'm just here steadying doin it for my son im barley 21 gonna be a floorhand but I'm blessed i know sounds crazy bout it ain't bout the money it's bout watching over you're crew also having there backs keeping clean work environment. 💪
Michael not much south. The Orleans oilspill fucked that. I used to sail out there and constantly see all those empty oil rigs near port fourchon and up the Houston ship channel
On an oil rig? I'm not sure buddy. I was a deckhand on a tugboat. Used to pass those oil rigs all the time. An old engineer told me before I left my last hitch that if you want to oil you should head to Canada. They are revolutionizing the oil industry.
They're new. If they got the job done and safely, what do you care if it wasn't 'fast' enough? They'll work their confidence up to it in no time. Fast jobs tend to produce sloppy work. You don't want that.
That's the drilling mud. They are pretty shallow at this point because they are drilling into redbed which is a silty formation that turns the mud orangey red.
I herd an old saying a long time ago that the bow weavels eat up the cotton patch!an the worms are eating up the oilfield! But they will get better in time far Shure.
Ah everyone has got to start somewhere. If you have ever worked as a roughneck or as an ironworker, boiler maker, pipe fitter ect... And never been run off for being green then I guess you ain't worked to many jobs. But if you put out and show up you will make friends you will always be working somewhere out on the road. As time goes on your skills improve and you will find yourself one-day teaching skills to a green helper.
I broke out in 72 and weighed 140 lbs. My Dad was the driller and he didn't pull no favorites! Practice and getting a system going with the rest of the crew makes it a lot easier. It was rig moving day I hated! It's a tough job no matter what , but size wasn't that big a thing.
The camera man seems pretty worthless in this situation tbh, unless hes a super/foreman or whatever then I guess he is doing pretty good, hes even documenting the job, aha
It may not be the boy on the chain it may be the driller not slacking off on the pipe but either way every one has to learn I did it for years and I don't really miss it it was fun when I was younger
Seasoned driller on the camera the guy running the rig wanted the video and he is the one that made the post referencing himself on the title. Six months earlier he had no idea what a drilling rig was. And here he is learning how to run one I am giving him hell because that’s what we do for all of you that criticize the oilfield guys sense of humor. We spend more time together then we do with out own family’s we are brothers and are only as good and fast and safe as the weakest guy so before you say something stupid step foot into my size 13 redwings I’ll go toe to toe on a rig floor of any kind or size with any self proclaimed roughnecks my daddy was a driller one of the best that’s for sure and I’m a roughneck for life too
The more experience, the less shit you have too deal with in the future with people, Im 27 yrs old and have knowledge of a 45 year old mechanic. So suck it 😂
