If one is fortunate (or unfortunate?) enough to become a collector of handmade objects-watches, paintings, shoes and the like-the connection between price and nuance of quality become blurred because of emotion and true understanding of what a masterpiece actually is. Most don’t notice nuance these days, but to those who do there’s no going back to the ordinary. When the goal is restoration and perfection the rules are different-price is less of an issue, as is lead time for the work. Mr. Bedo doesn’t really “cobble.” He restores to a higher quality than originally present, and his work is a treasure to those who actually “get it.” Thanks for sharing your experience. Steve K.
First, I love watching Steve perform his magic, and I understand why he likes to keep prices close hold. Too many people, not spending a dime, complain about the prices whenever he mentions it. Now as for your video...great job‼️ I really enjoyed your thoughtful and thourogh insights. Your pace and pitch were very relaxing. I think waiting for the audio capability was well worth it. Looking forward to seeing more of your reviews (new subscriber).
Yeah i agree with you steve is the better cobbler today.just watching his work on youtube.he put his mind and heart for every repair he had.and his kind enough sharing his techniques to those who aspire to become cobblers.and find him little bit funny

Steve is a artistic craftsman whos knows his shit. Only a very small selection of cobblers are in his class... It's a shame the skill of steve is not more ready available ... If I had a teenager who wanted to learn the craft as a apprentice from Steve I would be so happy and excited...
I’m not surprised Steve went above and beyond, he truly is a sole man! Repairing shoes are in his sole! Yes, I know........ soul not sole, but it just fits! Gets some sole man! Steve is high, sole to soul! It’s nice you appreciate a good pair os shoes.
Vatche was definitely in the right to use gold lettering and brass nails. That is the standard because like you mentioned, the brass is softer than silver and it won’t scratch on hard surfaces. It will wear down like the soles wear down.
Excellent post and feedback. Your experience seems to mirror the impression I get from watching so many of his videos. I think he does take a whole other level of detail and attention to the customer’s preferences. That has been a point of contention with my Allen Edmond experiences. AE, while relatively good shoes, they do mass produce their recrafting work and will not be as responsive or attentive to your individual needs. As for other cobblers on Steve’s level, they seem to be few and far between and very difficult to identify. My recommendation is to use Steve and not bog down. Also, gotta say, don’t stress over the color of the nails! Not a gator guy, but those look terrific!
9:32 also, ref the corner heel cuff cut on the second pair, I think I’d be bold enough to take a single edged razor and cut the corner to match. Just me saying. Do at your own risk.
Profila Binding ... the straight edge or utility knife might make a more clean cut. Place the heels against one another for a visual guide and even mark it first. Again, just sayin’. Your call brother. All the best to you and thanks for your post. Nice job.

The question is not whether the shoes deserve Steve's work, but whether your feet desrve his work. :-) I'm on the other side of the Atlantic, so for me shipping would be prohibitive, but one very big advantage of seeing what Steve does is to leave the welt, and match the stitch spacing. Even manufacturers re-crafting service replaces perfectly good welting, as it is easier than matching stitches. It puts extra holes in the uppers though, so they only do three welt replacements usually. Did you get some Saphir Reptan to keep them conditioned?
Try putting an Aetrex inner sole in the Rothsay. I have found this brand to be better than several other top replacement sole makers and better than AE soles. Steve has done one shoe Dainite resole for me. Do you know why the triangular cut in the heal stack?
I looked through current replies for the silver nail question. And would add ... Look up the - Mohs scale of hardness for metals . Silver tone of steel nails is very different than silver. Silver is a. soft metal . Softer than brass .. Silver nails are used in some jewelry, and decorative boxes. Silver nails large enough to be worthy of decorative use in shoes , would likely require that each nail be hand made. .

AE’s recrafting service is awful. So good that you skipped them. The first shoe I sent them was destroyed. They sent it back to me with slices all over the upper. I sent pics to them and they apologized and had me send them back in exchange for a new pair of shoes. Quality control issues for sure. I sent them a second pair and they screwed up the heels making them angle out kind of causing your leg to bow. Super uncomfortable. Again I sent them pics and they agreed it was a mistake. Shoes were no longer level. I got them to redo the heels again. Quality control problems. I will never send another shoe in for AE recrafting. After 2 failed jobs one causing me to lose the shoe entirely, I’m done with them. I’m kind of done with buying AE as well. Quality has gone down hill.
should have asked for brick red stitching on the boots, not tan. something close to the sole color. the green boots look good with tan stitching because it contrasts. tan on tan would not contrast, but the black looks out of place because it's not used anywhere else on the shoe, like the red is.
Fabulous review! Steve is definitely a craftsman! I know he isn’t the only one of his kind in the industry but he is absolutely one of the best if not the best! Part of what makes him so great is his ability to create and engineer for improvement rather than just replace parts.
I believe the difference between Alligator " Skin ", is that it is glued to leather, it is really thin. You can tear the skin on a gator just by hitting it with a 2 by 4, it damages easily. So if this gluing isnt perfect, and or it has some age to it, it would slightly separate and of course it would tear quickly. Nice looking shoes. Steve's the greatest
@@chalkboardshoes And in a way its not really skin, its just a covering, a very beautiful covering, but still thin as paper. I actually had to hit a gator on the back with a board and saw the very thin covering tear away, I was amazed. Not sure how they harvest it to be used. I believe the strongest "hide" used in boot making is shark. It is tough stuff, and beautiful.
@@davidpielykh3996 I believe its applied to some type of skin, But I know from cleaning gators, it just peels off like paper, you can take your fingers and just peel it off of the Hyde.
@@charlesmiller5078scaled leathers like python or alligator do so, the scales are drying out and peel off. Regular conditioning helps a lot with this issue.
