I seem to remember the emperor letting the cult mechanicus worship him as a god in the 30k era so why not the ecclisiarchy in the 40k era?

The thing is… the Emperor is wrong about faith. Provably wrong. Without faith, yes, the Ruinous Powers are weakened. But they still exist. They still can affect the Materium. Big E’s choice is not between no faith and no Chaos. It’s between no faith and no defense against Chaos and faith with defense against Chaos. If having no faith meant that the Ruinous Powers were destroyed, then the Emperor would have a point. But that does not seem to be the case, or ever was the case.

EMBRACE? Never. TOLERATE? He might for a time.

The part that's impossible to determine, is how important speed was to his great Crusade plan. As he didn't want speed to save more humans faster but to stop chaos from being able to interfere to the degree he anticipated... which ultimately happened anyways. However, with the galaxy split in half by the Crix Maladictim and Chaos able to threaten half the galaxy with easy... and Tyranids threating all edges of it. The Emperor risks losing most of the Imperium if he does demand worshipping of him to stop. So I do believe the Emperor would have to reformulate his plans. My bet is, he'll appear to embrace it, but slowly wean them off of it. While this time, letting his loyal sons know his long term plans to appear to embrace his worship, so he can steer humanity in following generations back towards his Imperial truth. Imagine if the Emperor was to create 6 new female Primarchs (but not intended to be giga chad warlords like their brothers, but actually Psykic feminine superhumans and "spiritual guides" meant to take over the ecclesiarchy)... and their names were Alicia Dominica, Katherine, Silvana, Mina, Luca, and Arabella (remember no one knows what the Emperor said or did to them when they met him, Heck, they might even contain their original souls too... and many think they came out changed and might know the Emperor's plans/goals). Especially as it's clear due to Imperial Saints sisters with strong belief behind them can become the Emperor's demons, just now beefed up by the Emperor and put inside new bodies, so which 6 female souls are more likely to become worshipped enough ascend past living saint hood and onto Primarch hood than the 6 founders of the Adepta Sororitas. Beyond these six I suppose Alivia Sureka might be able to return too, as she did sacrifice her perpetual soul to Malcadore, who in turn sacrificed his to the Emperor. Obviously there's Celestine, but I think she's more gonna continue as an Imperial Saint as she's got a model. Obviously, back to these being the 6 founders of the Adepta Sororitas, they'd be instantly embraced by the religious (plus with five thousand years of Sisters believing in them could be way stronger than even Celestine), but their true goals would be to merge the belief in the Omnisiah and the God-Emperor... and to get the faithful and Mechanicus to seek scientific growth. Which in turn will, eventually, lead back to the Imperial Truth. This gets humanity at least on the path to once again embracing his Imperial Truth. Heck he could even eventually explain to those that still worship him that the only way he can defeat Chaos truly is to stop the worshipping of himself but to treat his surviving sons and daughters as guides that will let them one day let humanity join him as equals. The Emperor gets what he wants, getting to go back into the shadows and his passion of science, all while letting his children continue to be heroes of humanity who can always come to him for guidance if they need it... basically he earned a vacation/retirement.

I think we must remember that the text the Essilarch is based on was penned by LORGAR, who not only was chastised by Emps and the ULTRAMARINES, but is also primarily responsible for virtually half of the Astartes Legions falling to chaos. I can see Emps educating mankind on the true nature of the warp as an extension of the imperial truth, but I see the imperium of mankind turning to worship of the Emperor as a plan of Tzencth through Lorgar.

The emperor is the master of the long game. He would use their worship to take the fight to chaos, then once victorious he would tear the faith down even if it hundreds of years.

If anything is certain given his track record, he would make a very good plan, then make one last stubborn choice that slowly derails the plan.

For the reasons you outlined, I agree he would wish to return to the Imperial Truth. … however! I think he could be persuaded to DELAY that until he had managed to build out the Webway Project of old.

The only issue i see with this discussion is "then" vs "now". A lot of the evidence we see is from the Emperor back "then". The question is two fold in my eyes: what are his views "now", and (potentially) what fragment will be dominant now. It seems clear he has no issues using his power in a god-like way, and i doubt saints would channel his power without his permission. This is where the discussion should probably take place

I agree that if the same emperor who took up the throne stepped down again, there is no chance he would accept faith no matter the context. That said, I think that emperor is long, long gone.

I feel he always had a plan to get rid of the other religions only to fill the void with a single religion. We know he lied plenty. Him talking about religion is no different.

I think it might be most amusing if Big E returned and this split the Imperium into the Faithful and the Truthful, those who worship the God and those who follow the Emperor because what happens is the psychic warp entity that is known as the God Emperor of Mankind becomes distinct from the physical being of "Emperor Neoth".

Divinity and even worshop is so vague and ambigious in 40k anyways, so I could see it happening. There is not, and has never been, clear necessary and sufficient distinctions on what qualifies one as a 'god,' in the universe. In theory, the Emperor could already be a 'god' in all but name.

I think he couldn't do away with it on day one, He would be decried as a Chaos trick or something and start a second heresy.

The big E was fine with the Word Bearers until they fell behind schedule. The Emperor puts goals in support of his ideologies ahead of the ideologies themselves. I think he would use faith as a tool, like his sons.

Since I think The Imperial Faith and Godhood was part of his plan I think he'd roll with it if he came back.

He would certainly have to embrace the current ecclesiarchy and as time went on slowly bend it more closely to His own will and desire. Firstly get off the throne, then consolidate gains in the beginning like in the Great Crusade. Next use the ecclesiarchy to cement worship but in a more relaxed way and absolutely teach everyone about chaos like He should have before the Horus Heresy. Then as time went on change the teachings of the ecclesiarchy to reimplement the imperial truth.

I know he always intended for humanity to run the Imperium and there was always debate as to what would come of the Primarchs and Astartes. Has there ever been something mentioned as to what the Emperor intended to do after he succeeded uniting the galaxy?

He's way too pragmatic to drop faith as a tool. Hell, I'd argue the Imperial Cult is a solid backup plan. "No, no don't worship me as a god," he says while banking on it.

He kinda has to accept it at this point, or a the very least use it. There is no way to seperate faith from the imperium at this point, the only scenario I could see is the emperor is resurrected somehow... Finds some backwater planet of humans to become emperor of, remake his astartes project again, but this time in the 10's of millions and reconquer the galaxy and imperium under the imperial truth. Obviously, that ain't gonna happen. The theme of Irony is one of the reasons why I don't think the emperor knew the heresy was going to happen. There is a big theme of irony in warhammer, that being of Lorgar making the lectio diviniatum being ironically the glue that holds the imperium together, the irony of hours and the events on davin and the ritual, the irony of magnus trying to warn the emperor of treachery only to become the suspicion of treachery, the irony of the emperor being the beacon of science and understanding to than become the beacon of faith. It seems like the golden age of man was a brief moment in time where humanity was able to separate from their need of faith, but the birth of Slaneesh and the creation of the eye of terror was the final nail in the coffin for any chance that something secular could exist. When literal demons just rip through the fabric of space to super murder your family and the human mind being so easily corruptable, the only defense left is the power of irrational faith. Despite all logic and evidence, I believe and so it becomes true. Such a wild universe.

I think there is a precedence for this. The emporer let mars hold onto their faith, and they considered him the Omnissiah. A few things have changed for the emperor since his last bringing to heel of all mankind. All of his followers follow the same religion, his. And their faith *literally* gives him power, the same way it empowers the greater demonic powers. I think he would want to release a new testament as it were, but i think he would harness the faith of his followers while leading them to believe more in the powers of science. it just so happens we now know faith *does* empower beings. That is literal science now.

It would be super difficult to convince people that he isn't worth worship. If nothing else, he's only one guy. You need to find someone in reasonable numbers to get anything done. It's just not possible.

He needed to end Humanities worship that fed the warp. Once that power was starved, and weakened the Lord warp-farts him having that power fed into himself to ascend to true god-hood to combat the greater powers he couldn't stand against 1v4 at that time.

Whether or not he would it’s caused him to become a god. The worship has caused him to become very powerful in the warp so much so that he can trample Nurgle. The worship isn’t the only thing providing him power either.

If the emperor accepts his divinity guilliman will immediately fall to khorne, sell his tig biddy eldar gf to nurgle, and hit the imperium with heavy non streamlined chaos taxation.

Godblight made it clear that being worshiped is essentially slavery to the will of the faithful. I think he knows that and doesn't want it. Now what direction they actually go will probably be different.

I suspect the Emperor, were he appalled by the current state of. the Empire, he would be reigning hell from the Golden Throne. It is naïveté to think he hasn’t been using religion to rule his subjects the last 10,000 years. I also suspect we’re due for another revelation concerning the curing of Guillimen and the burning of Nurgles garden. I suspect the Emperor may have cleansed Mortarian at the same time knowing that Typhus had tricked him into defilement. I

Jokes aside, I think that a reborn Emperor would have no choice but to embrace Faith, as he is the most obvious beneficiary of it actually working.

Honestly, He wouldn't have a choice. Faith and the influence of the Great Rift gave Him the boost in power to "wake up".

I dont think theres any chance of him being restored and coming back as he was. 10000 years of damnation and worship is sure to alter ones perspective a bit. The imperial truth was always a lie and he knew it, but it served a purpose. The setting is long past that being a viable path forward though and if he returns to real space at all I think he'll capitalize on this religion to stave off the ruinous powers; at least for a time.

Maybe he'll try and use Religion and Science then try and get rid of the primer after defeating Chaos.

I think that view of religion might be a flaw of the writters. Many ppl think that religion is THE problem but truly, religion is a sintom of the problem. In the real world, ppl will find anything to hate each other, they dont need religion. Religion just makes it easier. In 40k it makes no sense to not have religion if it empowers him. Furthermore, having ppl worship him make them immediately not whorship chaos, so thats another point in favor. It makes no sense that an individual as intelligent as the emperor would not see this.
