How honored I know you feel to have known Mr. Disch! And what a prolific author, most of the titles you cited here being completely new to me. The one Disch work I have so far read is '334', which can loosely be described as a novel, and it is one of my favorite books. I think his being categorized mostly as a science fiction author has contributed to his relative neglect, as many scholars of literature fail to recognize science fiction as having real literary merit (which is of course absurd). I also wanted to mention that I did see the film of 'The Brave Little Toaster' theatrically, circa 1989, in an independently owned and run cinema in my home town. The film received a limited and sporadic theatrical distribution in the United States. I didn't care much for the film, and remember little of it. Quite enjoyed this personal and heartfelt presentation of a great writer's legacy.
Thanks, Barry. I loved Tom, and we're big fans of his stuff in the bathtub. You have many great reading pleasures ahead: try his horror trilogy, THE MD, THE PRIEST and THE SUB, you haven't read anything like them. Or any of his story collections. And thanks for your comments/thoughts on Nabokov elsewhere. Stay safe in the bathtub. Tom would have wanted it that way. s
Really loved this one Scott (I'm a Disch fan of long-standing) A sincere and heartfelt - even a little touching - intro/appraisal to a much under-appreciated writer. Only wish it had gone on longer, so I hope you can get back to him sometime and maybe talk about some of your favourites of the short stories.
jungastein much of Tom's best poetry can be found on that Endzone blog I linked to below. And if you want more, his last collection is great and funny and sad!
tonk82 Those are good (ECHO is a shortish novel) but there are countless great Disch stories. "Casablanca", "The Alien Shore", "The Shadow" etc. If you see any collection of his stories pick it up, it'll be great.
