As a kid we used to have one of the last of the original swaggies drop by our farm every summer to work on our farm, we used to offer him to set up in our shed but he used to prefer to camp down the river as that was how he travelled walking up and down the Murray Darling basin. My brothers and me made him a sleeping platform in a willow tree that had been pushed over by a flood and we used to bring him walaby, rabbits and ducks we'd shoot for him, which was what he preferred, veggies from our garden, bread mum would bake and tinned fruit. He used to tell us stories about his travels up and down the river, including fathering multiple kids, he was Austrian and you could tell he used to be handsome. When he stopped coming one year we just assumed he died, illness, snakebite, etc; doing what he loved, travelling and living under the stars. The most free person I've ever known, now I'm getting to the end of my life, surrounded by things and stuff I look back at that time and person with fondness for the simplicity and honesty which existed back then.

Great vid Scotty that brought back memories of my childhood we only had a couple of old grey army blankets to sleep with, a frying pan and a billy to make tea, a few spuds to throw in the fire, water from the creek if we caught a fish or 2 or a rabbit we ate like kings those were the days ,that was in the late 50s I was about 11 or 12 years old loved it then and still love it now but with a little more comfort ,well why not I'm 73 years old and I think I've earned it

You’ve got one from Maine as well, I’m still young but I’m in the Boy Scouts and I promised myself that I will keep camping till my legs won’t take me out to the woods. I also want to post videos on my channel so others can share the same love for the outdoors I do, It’s a humble channel I own not like Scott’s but I want to help as much as I can.

Those were the day. The change is massive even since I was a kid. (I'm 34). I have a decent size property with a lot of bush. I foster care an Aboriginal kid and as part of raising a confident Aboriginal kid we do a lot of rough camping. I took one of the elders, who's in his late 80s, the other week and went out with only water, digging sticks and the rifles. (Spearing animals isn't humane). The first thing that always strikes me is how quiet the bush is compared to when I was a kid. So few insects, birds, and the little shuffly animals such as native mice, lizards, etc. As a kid you sometimes couldn't talk because of how loud the birds were. The old bloke said that he used to be able to survive indefinitely in the bush but now has to take food with him as he's never sure if there will be animals in his area. He used to lay on his back in a paddock and couldn't see the sky from horizon to horizon due to the black cockatoos. Now if we see 30 cockatoos in a flock we are astounded. We ate a goanna and some tubers but he said even the tubers were smaller than he remembers due to the lack of rain. I'm in the process of learning to breed insects to release into my bush. I also have set up water points in the bush. Hopefully it'll help the animals to breed in my area so by the time the kids can take over the property it's noisy again.

I don`t know if you have ever watched the movie" stand by me" but it also brings back childhood memories. At 12 years old I always went with other kids and my dog. I was almost 18 when I started camping alone. I bought my backpack when I was around 24. This let me go around 5 days but because I was an adult with a full time job, most of my camping was just overnight like before.

So good to see a young bloke getting out there and doing it for real and... doing it with respect to our heritage, both indigenous and pioneering. Those swaggies were tough as old boots but still appreciative of our literature, music and culture and let's not forget our 'First nation' people. how tough were they! At 60 I am getting back to camping out of a backpack after decades of car camping and I like the idea of minimalist, traditional swaggie kit. Great video, you got a new subscriber.

Solid bloke for always adding the Acknowledgment of Traditional Owners; also Black Cockatoos are a sign of rain :) For the mosquitos also - find eucalyptus / gum nut trees and get the leaves, brush/slap them against yourself and it’ll leave the scent on you or burn them in the fire, the oil from them is a natural repellent and the smoke will keep them away

I love your attitude when so many things didn’t go as planned. Had to fight to find a spot, mosquitoes everywhere, and storms. You still showed the great outdoors with excitement and love. Cheers from the USA! Loved the video. I could hear those mosquitos buzzing. Rainy camping is always interesting and challenging. I once camped during a 17 hour rainstorm with pink lightning. I was on a hill, so didn't get flooded out, but a bridge was out the next day and some trees down and flooded areas. Camping is always fun, no matter what the weather. Take care and stay safe. Hi Scotty. Great video as usual mate. I just wanted to suggest that you avoid blowing out the Toaks alcohol burner. If you happen to blow it not quite right you might end up with burning alcohol on your face or spilling out onto dry grass etc. I have the same burner and always snuff it out with the base of my pot to suffocate the flame. 👍

Ist view, sub'd. I used to go camping with just a clear plastic sheet. Stuff some grass in each corner, shape it like an octopus and loop the rope over that. Was lighter than a tent. (Dome tents weren't around then.) Best tent ever. I've spent 100's of nights under canvas. The old army tents were great but not really for hiking. Good luck with 100k.

Another great video Scotty. Hey the "disaster" type camps are often the best and give us a great laugh when we remember them many years down the track. As for the swag camping...yep it's a great way to camp. My swag was secondhand when I bought it over 40 years ago, so it's basic as they get, just canvas and a thin mattress no poles, no mesh nothing. I still love it and it works a treat still. Keep the videos coming I love watching them.

Honestly I’m not sure if I’d use a bivvy like that, I really enjoy my 2 person tent for the simple reason of being able to keep things inside and dry. My tent is also extremely light and packs super small, no need for a tarp. Wouldn’t mind giving it a try though!

Wow…those mozzies! Think I’d have been tempted to stick my legs in the rain-jacket sleeves & wear it upside down with the bottom around my waist! 🤣 So great to show that things not quite going to plan doesn’t necessarily have to be an issue, or stop you from doing stuff (& that it can even add to the experience!)...& helps with feeling & bit less apprehensive/ more confident about trying things that might not work out as intended. Glad to see someone else other than me likes mint jelly too! 🙂

Hi Scott, I've done a few bedroll and tarp hikes over the past decades and I'll happily say that it's modern, ultralight gear for me (with some Bushman brand 80% DEET mozzie rep)! Traditional kit is much more hard-wearing, a lot easier to repair and in some ways, more multi-functional, but there aren't many of us going out for more than a couple of nights that need gear that's that robust (and heavy).

Answering the question though, me personally, Ive slept in the long grass with Indigenous ppl around the top end, on park benches and on desert islands. I had an idea for your channel now that restrictions are lifting, perhaps a trip up far north with equally eager outdoorsman fishing and exploring would make good content?

It would be good if you could show a little bit more of the edible bush tucker around I like seeing it when you show that. Helps remind me of the things I've forgotten like the pig face hips ID forgotten about those but I saw in your other video you were snacking on them which made my memory kick in to place again and remember that

The swagsetuplooks quite comfortable and practical. Beautiful bush setting, the bark colours sure come alive after the rain. We can tell how bad the mozzies were when the camera audio picks them up. That mozzie net looks like good stuff.

don't blame you for affiliating with Survival Supplies Australia. I've got a bit of gear from them and they are an awesome mob! Good selection of gear too.

I just listened to "the band played waltzing Matilda" by Liam Clancy today. Such a sad story. Then this shows up in my fed. Well done Scotty. Love the vids.

Love your vids. I noticed when you were tying up your swag roll that when you pass the rope thru the loop to ty it off if you pass it thru twice and cinch it up it will stay tight. The same as when you ty your main line to the tree when putting up your tarp. It's an old postmans knot for tying bundles of letters.

You can still see the rare swaggie about. Saw one treading the blacktop just out of Molong NSW late 2021.

Great show bub!! Anytime I watch and learn and improve my setup I’ll give the salute! Myself, move very slow with bow and arrow then set up for comfort. In the water or on land- it’s all sweet! Very nice show man!!

Loved the video! It's always good to see the bush in the rain, it's so beautiful and serene. Also, best place to try out your singing voice, no one there to critique. 😅
