Thanks Scotty these videos bring back a lot of memories of my childhood I and some friends started doing this at about age 10, our swag would consist of a couple of old army blankets a billy an old worn out frying pan and an old tin mug some wire for snares a fishing rod and reel and a pocket knife some tea and a couple of potatoes maybe some bread maybe a can or 2 of baked beans and hope we caught a fish or two or snared a rabbit some times we'd go for 2 or 3 days usually there would be 4 or 5 of us or more and we had the time of our lives that was back in the 1950s and I have always camped like that only these days I sleep in the back of my old Landcruiser on a foam mattress and a sleeping bag I think at almost 73 years of age I've earned a little creature comfort .

Finally a Swagman video that actually talks about who they were and shows the kit. There's alot out but the makers go on with their outing...which is cool...but never go over their kit and stuff. Yours is alot more modern materials. But shows the 100 year concept still holds up. Thanks, I do bushcraft in the states and love traditional gear and ideas

A tip from my Granddad who went on the Wallaby in the 1930s, use a towel as your shoulder stap, much more comfortable than a leather strap. Although these days I take a swag when camping the swag is carried in the car. Great video, thanks

Watching from the UK, I stumbled across you recently, I really enjoy your channel especially with the draconian measures we are all living with, great scenery and your enjoyment and enthusiasm comes through. My Wife and I and our two Children went to Australia for 28 days 18 years ago, stayed on the Gold Coast and Sydney, I loved it. Laying on a lounger the second day a large Australian gent on the next lounger asked me where I was from, he then asked if I wanted to go surfing with him, at that point I was frightened of sharks and told him so, he replied that I would be safe with him as he had a sure fire way of keeping safe, I was intrigued and asked how, he pointed at his Wife reading a book on the next lounger and said he always makes sure she is 100 meters further out than he is, well the look she gave him nearly turned him to stone, I was just wondering what he would have done with the spider, I would have had a job to sleep.

Great video. The She-oaks and sound of the river take me back to the car camping trips we did in the Hunter valley when I was a kid back in the late 60's and early 70's. The road forded the river, there were hardly any bridges and there were rocky embankments near the fords where people just stopped and camped. And that was what we did, cooking on a campfire by the side of the road and all four of us sleeping in the back on the '67 Holden station wagon. Great memories. Cheers.

@danielschneke2376
@danielschneke2376 2 года назад
@@andrelaschet3957 the term comes likely from the same area. Matilda was/is a Teutonic name which has the meaning of the mighty battle maiden. Since the swag was considered as a “sleeping partner” the term likely derives from that. These days it would probably be Waltzing Sheila 😅

Very nice. I love the outdoor channels as it keeps you connected to real LIFE. My 46 year old wife just sticks to Facebook and "virtual reality" all the time. So sad to see. She actually went to a "respit(e) centre, battling depression, pre menopause, and so much else from her childhood, and she just came back home, and immediately went back on to her computer to virtual reality. I guess that the real world is really that bad, after all. But, me? I like greeting people on the street, especially if they're walking their dogs. And conversations. And humour.

Well Scotty its good to see the young blokes remembering the old swaggies mate, they were the back bone labour of so much of rural Australia, particularly in the sheds (shearing sheds that is). Mate thinking back to that bygone era, when seeing your swag and its contents I had laugh to myself. S/Steel billy, titanium frying pan, and a GPS, WOW, mate you'd be the envy of many a swaggie Scotty, and topped off with a Pommie bed roll. Ha, don't worry, there were many Pommie imports back in the 50's humping their bluies on the long paddock, picking up their 3 bob a day dole from the local post office. Occasionally an old sundowner would drop into our place. Most were WWI or WWII veterans with empty war disturbed lives. My Dad being a WWII 6th Div soldier would always accommodate them well with a soft bed on the verandah and if they fitted, give some of his clothes. Mum would do their washing and refill their tucker bag with home cooked bread, and some home made butter and some fresh veggies from our garden. Mate if you can score a 25ld hession sugar bag, these were the traditional tucker bags and were attached to the swag shoulder strap and hug over the front to act as a counter weight to the swag. Usually sash cord was the standard tie aound the swag roll and doubled up to become the shoulder strap. You did well Scotty and my heartiest complements to you for the effort you put into making this video. P.S. Bulldog ants were the bain of a swaggies life. A number a swaggies perished from multiple Bulldog ant stings. A very painful way to die. Always search around an area where you want to camp because these ants are very active of a night, and are total bastards, traveling up to 30 to 40 metres from their nest which is usually just one sometimes two holes. They're extremely aggressive and bloody dangerous. Once stung in your sleep you'll never forget to comb the area before setting up your camp.

I have a Wynnchester swag too, absolutely bullet proof. A bit weighty but worth the extra effort carrying it for that extra peace of mind. I live in Wales and most of my wild camping is in the mountains or along the coast, both environments are very fickle with the weather but this swag is up to anything mother nature throws at it and coupled with a decent tarp you have everything you need in terms of shelter. I too carry a Millbank bag and tend to boil water as opposed to using my filter, although, i do carry a Lifestraw and use it whilst walking if a water source is available. When it comes to fire I normally have a contained fire in either my solo stove or my folding bushcraft essentials stove as I live in a National park and gorse fires are a big problem in Wales so I don't take any chances and the plus side is fuel consumption is minimal in both cooking food and boiling water and having a real fire to relax to. Great video, mate, i find them informative and relaxing, so keep them comming! Cheers

Totally! Over many swag trips ive set mine with two canvas shoulder straps that i attach to the holding straps on the swag itself. Later added a spliced leather keeper to the bottom to fit a belt. Lol the end result is pretty much a backpack 😀 but i hate carrying over one shoulder but i also love my swag.... i can go 10 times the distance with this set up. And if i forget the straps its easy to rig the exact same setup with a scarf or a shmaug, providing the straps that hold the swag closed are good, depending on body mass. Im a toothpick so its easy to get two straps and a belt from 1 😀

Wow, I really enjoyed that! First video I’ve watched. Takes me back to 1992 bush walking with friends in the Blue mountains. Snakes and spiders in every corner. Great memories! Thanks 🙏🏻

Loving your work Scotty. This episode I especially enjoyed the soundtrack with the frogs and birds, but so pleased with your handling of your fire scar. Many years ago I was taught to do that - proper dousing of the fire and cover up. Love the swag concept too, thank you

"Once a jolly swagman sat beside the billabong Under the shade of a coolibah tree". Loved this Scotty. Great to see that you are still able to get out and about. Stay safe! From Colorado, Roger. .

Waltzing Matilda is a great song thanks for the recommendation. Up there with whiskey in a jar an when the roses bloom again for old timeless songs.
