At 12:30 in the video, you can see two stickers on the bottom right hand side of the rear window. The top sticker says '平成22年度' (Heisei 22 nendo=Financial year of Heisei 22=April 2010 to March 2011) and '燃費＋5％達成者' (Nenpi +5% tassei-sha= +5% fuel economy achieved vehicle). The bottom blue oval sticker with 3 gold stars says '低排出ガス者' (Tei-haishutsu gas-sha= Low emissions vehicle) and is a sticker approved by the Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (lowest line on the sticker). These stickers are important (here in Japan) as they signify approval by the authorities which translate into tax benefits. Fortunately, they have largely dispensed with putting these stickers on cars as consumers did not like all of the government stickers we have to put on. Even our rear number plates have the left screw covered with an aluminium seal to prevent removal of the number plate. Many vehicles imported will likely still have two stickers in the front windscreen. The top left (passenger side) circular sticker is for the legally required vehicle service (not M.O.T.). The centrally placed square sticker is for the 'shaken', which is the M.O.T.. Each sticker has the year in the centre, which is noted in the era of the current emperor. The circular sticker also has 12 months noted around the perimeter with the month in which the service must be conducted highlighted in white. The colour changes with the year. To give my vehicle as an example, my circular sticker has a '5' (Reiwa 5=2023) and the month of May (5) highlighted in white. My vehicle will have its service on the 13th of June and this is not illegal. My square shaken sticker has '5' in the middle denoting May and a smaller '6' (Reiwa 6=2024) in the bottom left, meaning that I must have my shaken in May of next year (2024 or Reiwa 6). The 'shaken' certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times and it is a traffic offence not to have it in the car. It must typically also be presented when using a car ferry. Japan is very bureaucratic and the government is incredibly analogue. They have recently set-up a 'Digital Agency' which is attempting to digitalise aspects of government. However, the love of paper persists and the new digital shaken certificate launched in January of this year is now downsized from an A4 piece of paper to a slightly smaller than A5 piece of paper with a chip on it and we also get an extra piece of A4 paper to go along with it. This is the Japanese government's idea of digitalisation.

Hi Ian. We chatted at the Bromley Pageant of motoring a couple of years ago. I'm an MOT tester. Every so often DVSA changes the MOT pass/fail criteria and crucially, the wording. I'm sure that they have added a sentence at the end of windscreen damage which says (and I am paraphrasing here), it says 'A crack or damage WHICH OBSCURES THE DRIVERS VIEW OF THE ROAD'. I take this literally and I DO NOT issue a failure if the drivers view of the road is not affected. Testers are still failing vehicles on windscreen damage that should (in my opinion) pass and advise.

We briefly had a small fleet of these in a pick up configuration as work transport. If we put much more than a couple of heavy tool bags and a large pork pie in the bed the steering became worryingly boat like. If you can try and load up the back with the sort of weight you hope to carry it might give you a better idea if this will suit your needs.

I would absolutely love to see videos on this, it could be a fantastic addition to the fleet with a lot of longevity of content and fun! I reckon there are one or two others in the fleet that have run their wonderful, but limited course now and this would be a great replacement. It is surely a very cute car, but getting spare parts could be a real challenge. My eye was caught however by the purple Volvo XC70 D5 sitting next to it. Now that's a family car which can tow without effort!

So the HiJet story is a bit more complicated than that... The vehicle sold in the UK until 2004 as the HiJet wasn't in fact built by Daihatsu - it's a redesign of the early 90s HiJet by Piaggio, re-engined by them and sold as the Porter. Daihatsu, who carried on developing the HiJet in a different direction, ended up selling a rebadged Porter in the UK as a HiJet, whilst simultaneously making and selling the semi-cab development in Japan as the HiJet. So. This Atrai is based on an Extol, which is based on a HiJet, but not the HiJet which was sold in the UK, which was a Porter. Hope that's nice and clear for everyone....

If you take the safety aspect out of the equation like I do with my Fiat Panda then this is a highly practical, efficient good little vehicle that would be a great ownership experience.

That is a nice little car. Makes me think "Honey, I shrunk the Alphard". But I think you made the right decision turning it down. It's got a few issues, the biggest one being that it's not a Kei truck.

I own this car so was curious how and when you will find all of those fancy levers features etc :) Unfortunately you did not manage to find a large trunk version when 3rd row seats goes under middle bench and a cargo version when two back benches become an almost flat platform. I like this Daihatsu as much as Miss Hubnet (Carly). I was quite shocked to see that Jeep Patriot right behind it! Quite a few of them on the roads where I live. Someone had one in a similar Colour years ago, to which I believe was in a major accident. Since she is deceased, and I see a Patriot in that very same Colour, I always think of her. And I see the dilemma of having a practical everyday vehicle which can tow Bob when the need arises. I do hope that Daihatsu goes to someone who will give it proper attention!

Well, it's not bright pink with green fur and stacks, and it actually has a working drivetrain, so it's got that going for it at least... :P

There's a couple of Suzuki Landies for sale at the moment - same size as an Altrai but 4wd - price has put me off but would have loved to say I've got a Landie (typically a Defender) and then turn up in it. Decent MOT history on the Altrai despite the mileage.
