Saskatchewan may not offer the best attractions or opportunities compared to other Canadian provinces, but it does offer a much more peaceful and budget friendly way of life. If you can tolerate the very cold winters and are able to secure a local/remote job, you might find that this is one of the best places to live when Canada is currently going through a cost of living crisis. Melfort is a small city of 6,000 people in the northeast of Saskatchewan. It offers many different amenities like shopping, restaurants, swimming pool, skating rink, golf course and a lovely park. The job market is not as vast as larger centers, but it does have quite a few local industries and many opportunities for working in agriculture. Would you live in the small city of Melfort, SK?

One of the reasons that towns like Melfort, Tisdale and Nipawin, etc are still successful and livable is that it has not had its retail soul ripped out of it by Walmart.
@cattymajiv
@cattymajiv 2 дня назад
I despise Walmart, and the Conservative governments that made it possible for American corporations to do just as you said, and rip out the heart and soul of the entire Canadian economy. It was done by elimating laws and regulations, which created a free for all for the American corporations. The process that occurred is most immediately visible in the retail sector, which has been completely decimated, first by Walmart, and then by many others. And now they are packing up in places, leaving a void that was created by the massive number of bankruptcies, big and small, and now can't be filled by any Canadian companies. SO MANY thousands of companies, big and small, went broke! Because FIRA (the Foreign Investment Review Agency) having been eliminated, it no longer controlled who can come into Canada. The Combines Investigation Act was also chopped, so nothing prevents monopolies now. And the laws against predatory pricing were also eliminated. In a 1, 2, 3 blow, the American conglomerates were allowed to come in, with their predatory pricing, and they wiped out literally HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CANADIAN JOBS! And the pensions that the low paid retail workers had planned to rely on were also wiped out, mostly stolen by the bankrupt companies, like Sears, Hudson's Bay, Eatons, Woolworths, Woolco, Zellers, Gambles, and so many more I can't remember them all, literally thousands of stores and chains all went broke over a 10 year period, including all pharmacies in existence at that time. The American businesses which took over the country are a LOT MORE than just retail stores. Among other things, nearly the entire oil industry has been sold off to Americans, and Alberta gave them massive incentives to take it, like 100% tax breaks, interest free loans, loan guarantees, gifted land, relaxed regulations, etc. Huge areas of contaminated land are just sitting here, with no remediation done at all, while companies took the money and ran. To cover their butts, the Separatists of the Alberta govt are STILL blaming Trudeau's dad for a contract that their own beloved Peter Lougheed signed FIFTY YEARS AGO! Never mind the Saudis and their market manipulations, they think they need to "own the libs", and the Liberals are an easy target because they are in power. They are arrogant and incompetent in many ways. But the Conservatives are intentionally blind, and they are hiding their own blame, for conspiring with the federal Tories in selling nearly Canada's entire economy off to the US. The American companies, which are often disguised as being Canadian, even with the word Canada or Canadian in their name, do provide some very poor quality jobs, but all of the profits go south. Blind, right wing, "free market" ideology, with no regard what-so-ever for how things work in the real world, has absolutely destroyed our retail and many other sectors. What if the US orders all their companies out at once? Or if even just one company, like Wal-Mart, were to close all their stores? It would be catastrophic. Perhaps an opportunity in the long run, but at what cost? The revamping of the shopping centres and real estate to conform to the American style of retail has cost many millions, but created soul-less landscapes that only those who are very healthy and wealthy can navigate successfully, with a car. Bus stops are miles apart, and VERY far from the stores. Streets have become so depressingly identical, with all the American companies on them, that it's so easy to get lost. Canada as we knew it is gone. I could go on for an hour about this, but I have to go somewhere, so I'll end my rant here, but I am in complete agreement with you!

I would happily live in a city like Melfort. It’s a shame that malls in general are failing. I can’t really understand why since our cold climate makes the idea of going to a mall much more desirable than running through the cold and snowy winters for one’s shopping needs.

One thing I think killed the mall , most of what the mall stores sell is not any necessity. For your daily needs you can go to Canadian tire , no frills , co-op , Peavey mart , marks work warehouse or if absolutely needed 😢 Walmart I cannot remember the last time I was in the local mall , it's been years . And the only business I can think of that I would use is "the source"

Hi Alina! I recall driving through Melfort only once, while I was a grad student at the University of Saskatchewan decades ago. When driving north from Saskatoon to Waskesiu Lake, Montreal Lake and/or La Ronge, we would typically drive through or stop in Prince Albert (or PA) for gas and/or eats. Well, Melfort is not a bad small city. I've not stopped there in a long time, but I really haven't gone north of Highway 16 in Saskatchewan for years. As someone who has and still does live in many smaller communities on the Canadian prairies, I was pretty impressed with what you showed us. It's six times bigger than where I live now, and still has many of the amenities that make a community work. Centralization has gutted so many of the once booming regional hubs, but Melfort looks like it's doing better than most. Could I live there sure, but would I want to live there is more of a maybe. I never want to live in a bigger city but want to closer to one, under a hours drive for the amenities that you get if your population is around a million. Still I enjoyed this tour of a fair sized Saskatchewan city.

Ok...that's one opinion and you have that right. I was born and raised in Regina and I think Sask is a horrible province to live. It's got horrible winters, my friends 12 year old sister froze to death not 6 feet from the back door of her home. Pick up a Regina newspaper and all you read is about football all summer and curling all winter. Serious boring. In Regina, every failed grocery store gets turned into a Bingo Parlor. And it's the worst labor union province I've ever lived in. And don't get me started on crime rates around all the native reserves...Just say NO......

@@maxxomega6599 Hmm. Heard similar opinions from all sorts of people in North America. Now Alina buys a ticket to the affordable SE Asia in winter, taking her dad along. I was going to tag some video with a comment that former British colonies all have trouble falling for right wing disinformation. Look at the trouble in India, South Africa, and UK itself. All in one form of misery or another. Consider Norway with its giant sovereign fund that serves the people. No English history (since Harald Hardrade got kicked out of England). It’s the same in most places in sask due to native reserves all around these cities or towns. The crime is thru the roof the violence is crazy. If you still can Google the shootings there you will see. And you cant defend yourself with a gun in Canada. There was a farmer that tried and was charged even tho it was a clearly self defence. You move to sask you must accept half your things will be gone and you can’t do anything about it. It’s sad as it’s pretty there but staying overnight is a check on the vehicle every 30 min. Hubby grew up there to

Nice to see it! I have been to some Saskatchewan small towns, lots to recommend with Saskatchewan life and people! I'm past moving again, but pricing here in BC has driven a friend or three out of our Province!

Im Toronto norn snd bred and as i get older and the wotld gets crazier, a place like this looks quite welcoming . How are the food prices there and howvis the food selection in the grocery stores?
@AlinaMcleod
@AlinaMcleod 10 месяцев назад
Food selection isn’t as varied as big cities of course and food prices are a bit more expensive on a whole because there’s less competition. But the low real estate more than makes up for it.

Looks like a nice, clean prosperous place to raise a family. Some city people look down on places like Melfort but it depends on what one is looking for. Our big cities in Canada have become crime ridden, drug infested sh*t holes. Compare that with places like this where community truly means something and there is a real sense of belonging.

Love all the places you go! My mother's family was Canadian and I do feel a connection to Canada. I also live on the cost of lake Ontario so not that far. There is some ethereal quality to that land I can't describe especially the farther north you go. Also the music you choose for your videos is amazing. In the video the music also helps carry that ethereal quality. Hope you are getting the rest and recharge you need. Always looking for to next video (only when you are ready ofcourse please don't feel rushed)

Glad to see your dads doing well. Haven’t seen him in close to 10 years probably. Used to come and buy lumber from us many years ago. Tell him we say hi. I graduated in 2002 so I was a bit older then you. Your video just happened to pop up in my suggested viewing list. Melfort mall has gotten a lot smaller since you were visiting as well. Coop moved to the new grocery store and Fields has been packing things up and moving inventory to the Nipawin store. Backstage is set to move out next week. Not much left now. I fully expect it will get torn down within the next couple years.

Cool video! I love how you show small city/town Canada. I grew up in a small town in BC and it’s virtually identical. So yes I would absolutely live in or around Melfort…however I now live just outside of Vancouver and am too much of a weather wus now. Saskatchewan winters don’t play around!

For a small community, it has quite a bit to offer and very clean. Had to laugh a little of Dad's fries and gravy. I've always heard Canadians like gravy served with various dishes. I guess it's true. Great video, Alina. I would love to get back to a slower paced life and live there.
