** NEW WEBSITE - NOW LIVE ** (August 2020)
If you'd like to know more about us, our plans, our boat and this adventure, then be sure to check out our new website here: www.cluelessya...
So as part of our 90 day countdown, with a mountain of chores to try and tackle we've decided that the most logical thing for us to do is to prioritise our list. The way in which we'll rank each job is going to be based on safety, with (what we feel is) the most important safety jobs being tackled first, so for example we will be compiling an emergency grab bag before revarnishing the Nav Station.
These videos are fairly quickly put together just to try and shed some real(ish) time on how things are unfolding and more over that we can tap into the collective wisdom of many of our wiser watchers when it comes to dodging some potential problems that we may not of thought about?
Anyway, this video tackles one of the things that's really concerned us, our life raft situation!

I don't know why YT stuck a 2yr old vid in my feed but I'm glad it did. It gave me a chance to see brilliant Carly episode and a reminiscent glimpse of the famous whole-of-Solent visible landmark Fawley Tower now sadly demolished.

So just a word of caution. Life-rafts are the absolute choice of LAST resort. You should only get into a life-rafts if you have to step up as the boat is going under. Life-rafts are very flimsy and only Intended for a few days at the most. A good quality 'rubber dinghy" will be much safer and long lasting. Before you were probably born there was a terrible disaster in the 1979 famous Fastnet race ( to Ireland and back). A dozen or so experienced sailors lost their lives off various different yachts in the race hit by a storm. They abandoned their yachts for liferafts and perished when the liferafts flipped or sank. Most of the boats were found later rough but floating . The crews could have survived if they stayed with their yachts. Some Changes were made to liferaft designs after this well publicized tragedy but they are still not great and should be a choice of very last resort and most defiantly not a 'get out of jail free card'. Especially well offshore and in countries with poor rescue services. I would invest in a good rubber dinghy with a good ditch kit. Some come with extras to use as a life raft. Yachts rarely go down so quickly that you need a quick release liferaft ( the locker is Prehaps not the best though). Also I doubt the cover of that raft is designed for continuous UV exposure. Cheers Warren. PS see this post about the greatest liferaft story ever warren149.wordpress.com/2019/01/23/review-of-the-last-voyage-of-the-lucette-by-douglas-robertson/

It's just easier to share how things are unfolding in little bite size chunks that aren't too heavily edited. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing a well polished video and will certainly get back to trying to improve our production quality when we have all those long sunny days and time to fill 😬😬🍻

It is not every sailor girl that has her own "blue man". So glad you got a life raft bracket. The locker was not the best. In an emergency situation with adrenaline pumping you could have gotten the raft out of the locker. Having a bracket is so much better. You may want to turn the bracket so it is facing outboard. Facing inboard the way you have it will require lifting the raft over the guard rail. Keep it simply. Enjoying your channel a great deal. Be happy, be safe.

The general advice is to step up into the liferaft, so for the most part the time taken to extricate the raft and deploy it - is good thinking and assessment time about if you really need to abandon ship. However the one practical exception (and there is always an exception) would be a major fire.

Just watched the “Next Leg 2020” video. Great, and for one simple reason: I believe most of us here, on the other side of the monitor, are either dreaming of doing this or half way through (this last category encompassing all of us who already bought a boat and is in desperate search for knowledge and experience). So, the upcoming videos, regardless the editing details, quality, lack of dramatic or idyllic scenery will in fact have content that a good number of your viewers are actually looking for! Something that may add or help building up everybody´s boating experience! All the best to you both!

That’s where I fitted my life raft but outside the rail so I just need to pull a snap shackle and it’s launched. I also fitted a hydrostatic release unit (off eBay!) so in theory it will launch itself if the boat sinks. I didn’t think much of the supplied fixing brackets so I strapped in on with some big (10mm) tie wraps.
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 4 года назад
I think this video is already worth its weight in gold to us because an hour ago we had no idea what a hydrostatic release unit even was!!! Certainly going on the shopping list now! :)
@junkbarny6958
@junkbarny6958 4 года назад
I also did away with the central metal retaining strap the cradle came with which looked hopeless. I used a length of 25mm webbing attached either end to the bottom of the cradle which attaches at a single point at the top via the release unit (so the webbing is in an inverted V across the raft) which seems much more secure.

Best decision you can make, having LSAs in a grab bag in the cockpit and a LR on the stern is a must. Having sailed for over a decade now, the importance of easier reachable life saving equipment cannot be missed. Better to have it and never use it than need to use it once and never have it! Beaulieu boat jumble is cracking! We got our first tender from there. Make sure you fit a hydrostatic release unit for the raft with the painter attached so if the vessel goes down too fast it will release automatically. Standard thing on merchant vessels and yachts and happy to explain more if you give me a shout! Keep the daily’s coming
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 4 года назад
Great shout on the hydrostatic release unit. Now I know I should try and not look quite as clueless and simply Google it, but what the hey, we're chatting here.... What exactly is an 'LSA' ?
@ChrisHudsonVlogs

Sailing Cadoha LSA iS life saving appliances, They include so many things including pouched water, food bricks, flares, radar reflectors, spare handheld VHF etc etc. It goes on and on depending on your passage and locations. I’m sure you have things like flares etc covered but things like immersion suits are key even in med waters, the med can be evil at times and is like sitting in the middle of a washing machine! Obviously I’m talking worst case and not trying to scare you guys! 😂 you have already seen what biscay can be like! If you want I can send you a list of what our rescue boats and life rafts include onboard?! Also newer life rafts will be smaller and better packed, I would definitely try and have it mounted out of railings and out of obstructions.

Aye m8's, it should be possible to mount the cradle on the outside, regardless of its shape.
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 4 года назад
I think it'd need bigger mounting brackets then because these ones are far too small for the curvature when mounted on the outside. This is the only downside to paying £25 for kit, the fact that they don't often come with instructions :/
@MiQBohlin
@MiQBohlin 4 года назад
Sailing Cadoha Yup, it’s definitely worth a try to find or invent suitable brackets. Being able to put the whole package on the outside must be absolutely desirable. Even if you’ll end up turning the cradle 90° to make the mounting possible.

How about a frame in front of the spray hood, put a winch and on the transom, you use a winch and more than a life raft,, you hope ,

it may be worth looking at in front of the spray hood to be fair. There oddly doesn't feel like there's a huge amount of options up on deck, for various reasons, but will have a good think before we settle on the new life raft. :)

Sailing Cadoha I have done my safety at sea and life raft courses as what is compulsary to anyone on a merchant vessel, they are not nice even in a pool. They do the courses in the pool next to west quay and I definately recommend one, simple things like turning a raft the right way up and learning how hard they are to get in to! Let’s set a dinner and beer and I can try and tell you as much as possible! I’m only jealous as I would love to just buy a boat and go like you!

Exact same cradle I have. As you are on the Hamble I would thoroughly recommend going to Universal Safety at Swanwick. You can see life rafts they have being serviced, you can specify what you want and they can sort out a good deal for you and may take your old raft for a few quid off a new one. I took an old raft to them for servicing and they opened it for me and showed me how bad it was.... they gave me £50 for it and a good deal on a Lalizas ISO raft with a 24hr pack. Worth a visit just to see what you are getting. Speak to James. Address is Universal Safety Ltd Unit 3-5 Midas Business Park Coal Park Lane Swanwick Southampton Andy UK
