Thank you Bullfrog for sharing your chicken videos. I'm afraid if they were my animals I'd be inclined to take a more proactive stance in protecting them. I'm not saying that to criticize it's just what I'd do.
To each their own. What I protest is the conventional wisdom that chickens as a species must be raised in Fort Knox coops and that conventional wisdom choking out the heritage breeds still around that can survive free range with minimal human protection. Variety is the spice of life. Ideally there ought to be a spread of breeds that can meet the needs and wants of whoever might want to raise chickens. All chickens shouldn't necessarily be athletic and alert like mine and all chickens shouldn't be coop queens. Let both kinds exist. What I'm really fighting is an idea that it can or should only be done one way.
@@Florida_Bullfrog That's a good way of thinking. I will admit I've never had any experience with cracker fowl, the only thing I've ever had have been coop queens. I am considering giving some of your cracker chickens a try. A lady that works with my wife has a few I might try to get some chicks from her.
I would suggest buying Black Old English Game Fowl from Cackle Hatchery while they still have stock. They will work better for your hawk problem. A hawk will mistake it for a crow and not attack.
I never put much stock into the “black chickens repel hawks” theory. Hawks are mobbed by crows sometimes but that doesn’t mean crows repel hawks. Also, I know someone who has raised my Crackers along with Cackle OEG and he found my Crackers to be the better of the two.
That doesn't look good. Like you said time will tell. You could try a wash with with peroxide & water mix to clean the wound before putting on the medicine, but that would only help for a topical wound and not a deep puncture. Another thing you could try would be to mix in some apple cider vinegar with their water to keep up the immune system.
