Wounded wild orangutan seen using plant as medicine | BBC News

A Sumatran orangutan in Indonesia has self-medicated using a paste made from plants to heal a large wound on his cheek, said scientists.
It is the first time a creature in the wild has been recorded treating an injury with a medicinal plant.
After researchers saw Rakus applying the plant poultice to his face, the wound closed up and healed in a month.
The behaviour could come from a common ancestor shared by humans and great apes, scientists have said.
The research was published by Dr. Isabelle Laumer, biologist at Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, Konstanz in the journal Scientific Reports.

He's not eating the leaves but chewing it finely to get the extract. Same thing some Asian natives do, chewing guava leaves and use it as poultice on a wound , as it serves as antibiotic. Another example is the extract from the leaves of moringa plant also helps stop bleeding wounds, they get the extract from pounding or chewing the leaves. Perhaps the natives have seen this behaviour from apes long before. Just like dogs and cats eating a certain grass like paragis leaves to help relieve tummy aches. Did you know that today there are already paragis tablets available for humans.

They think that he either learned which plant had medicinal properties from his mother (orangutans have the longest childhood of the great apes, spent entirely with their mother’s because they have so much knowledge to pass on about what plants/fruits are in season at what time and where, etc), or he had previously randomly touched a sore area after handling this plant and he noticed it had pain relieving qualities, and took note of it. All in all, extremely smart.

Check herbs traditionally used as medicine in your community/homestead. Beware, some herbs have nothing but tradition to back their use and can be harmful or useless, but others have been studied and found effective. Where I live, there's a shrub called "matico" (Buddleja globosa) which is used to heal wounds, both external and internal (stomach ulcers) - and it is officially certified as effective. Maybe in your surroundings there are also medicinal herbs. Check with your local medical authorities and traditional healers. ✌

@@Jacksimon18909 im curious if this is just a very situational instance, but id imagine other primates have done similar without us noticing. You’re probably right that it somehow noticed relief from the plant at some point, but its still amazing. Especially since its likely that for it to be as effective as it was it needed to be a paste made up of many ground/chewed up leaves. Which seems hard to have happened by accident. I have so many questions, like is the plant something they would normally eat or is it even edible. As I could see them realizing the benefits if they had some sort of sore or cut in their mouths and noticed relief when chewing on that specific plant.

@@fintan9218 in this case your assessment is correct however this would've happened or could even have happened before because they're natural foragers who still use their nose unlike us to test their food, the plant is edible and safe but the concept of pastes to them is a well known one by the way they often mash their food to eat however they've been showing several signs of evolution recently like at a camp in Borneo the adults copy the humans like washing their socks in the river or using tools copying the DIY man. A picture of an orangutan trying to help a fisherman from the river or the one who copied the local spear fisherman but upgraded the technique by hanging from vines to stop shadows on the water.
