WOW!! engine shaking violently! here's why!! 

Not uncommon. Especially older balancers that have been oil soaked continuously for decades

Unharmonically balanced

As a drag racer I have toasted so many of those till a bought a fluid one. Never had one fail

Oil saturation is the cause

If you rebuild engines,checking that harmonic balancer is a necessity or just get you a fluid damper and be done with it.

Didn't not expect that . I have seen that only once in all my years . The balancer does have a rubber grommet holding the inner and outer part of the balancer . WOW .

Ive replaced multiple harmonic balancers. Esp on VWs. Belt chirp etc... sometimes not the belt. Been there done that

I replaced quite a few balancers in my career.

Seen it on a 4.2 F-150 that came in for an alignment. Customer was notified. Wanted to know how long he could put it off for 😟

I bought an o6 mustang v6 , 3 days later putting freon in ac the harmonic balancer/crank pulley fell off while charging. 96,000 miles . The thing is glued together. Glued, smh, I couldn't believe it. Not to to hard to replace. Cheap ways they do things nowadays

Had that happen to the harmonic balancer on the 390 in my 74 F100 super cab years ago.

That power increase from the spade connector was too much power 😆🙌

Saw that in small block Fords and Chevys in the early 1970s but not since. Was that original?

Did you check your engine support mount?

my 77 camaro had one that fell apart , stock balancers have a rubber isolator that somtimes fails.

Those harmonica balancers are crazy.

About a 30 second diagnosis. Know your engine, find out if it is internally balanced or externally balanced . If externally it will shake in the case of a balancer that's defective. Internal it won't.

I've only ever seen that before on my '67 Mercury Cougar. Same thing. But that was in 1987

It usually shows up as the timing marks won't align bc the outer ring slipped tearing the rubber insulator. I replaced mine with an upgraded unit when I painted my engine to be safe

I've actually seen this before on the 302 in my old T-bird. Vibration damper sheared right off no idea how.

I had to learn that the hard way too. Had me stumped for a minute.

When the dampers start to fail they seep and leak oil. This happens about 7-8 years into the life of an engine. Rubber or neoprene last for only 8 years due to heat and oxidization. Laws of entropy can’t be overcome folks.

woahhhhh that's a good one hahaha one time mine came apart inside it self and was one wheel spinning inside itself still spinning with the belt. metal on metal rotating screaming like a demon from the underworld. hahahaha

My brothers 87 great running buick 3.8 260,000 miles had loose viberation dampener. Didn’t know what problem was. Broke the end of crankshaft off. Bye bye nice old buick.

When the front seal leaks for 20 years this usually happens.

When I rebuilt my 4.0L V6 at 150K because of a shudder, the harmonic balancer was shot. Inner and outer separated. Big surprise.

Change front seal also maybe install repair sleeve if need.

Fix that oil leak. I once traded a set of 350 bowtie heads for a brand new crate motor. A 400 sb torque monster set up because the guy put a 350 balancer and flywheel on it and couldn't figure out why it had a bad vibration.

Can anybody put in on what it would feel like if this was wrong? Would it shake the whole time the car is idling or only when driving?

Harmonic balancer moves 8 times per revolution of a 8 cylinder 90⁰ engine. That might be the part that moves the most on an engine.

I just replaced mine and still have vibration…wtf? 1980 ford 302. Vibration in park. Driving down the road, not so much.

Change your Crank seal and do a repair kit on the front of the crank about too

Of all moving parts to an engine, the harmony balancer is not supposed to be one of them". But it is.

They have that rubber bushing on the 302 and some 289's and they will break also

Brooo.... Those suck ass to fix. Mine separated and slide back into my cover plate... Was leaking oil for weeks cuz I couldn't figure it out. 2001 dodge ram 1500. Fixed it though lol...

Maybe you should take a look at the oil leaks

My engine shakes the whole car when I rev it I'll check that.will it shake if the transmission and the engine are supposed to be bolted a certain way

Fix your oil leak as well it's probably soaked in oil and degraded the rubber

I knw that as soon as you said car was shaking. When you get it apart you'll find it's actually a two piece harmonic balancer.

Looks like a oil leak dissolved the rubber!!! More than just a bad balancer!!!!

Been there, done that

I eat balancers and once split the hub after rolling the crank. $3000 later, back in business.

it's always the first part overlooked when people build a performance motor you ever see a balancer wobble loose and shoot through a radiator scared of f****** s*** out of you
