I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a mom must be so hard, especially for a girl. I lost my dad when I was a little girl and my mom was all my sis & I had. This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
Such a heart felt song such a beautiful song your singing with the angels they are privalaged to have someone with such a gorgeous voice sadly missed 😢
Yeah, the 1970s were not lacking for soft sad songs. You've already hit "Alone Again" by Gilbert O'Sullivan and "Without You" by Harry Nilsson and "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks, but there's still "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen and "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin" and doubtless more. The 1970s were not shy with the tearjerkers.
I'm glad for him that his wife was by his side when he needed her the most during his battle with leukemia. Beautiful song, but grateful it's not how things played out for him at the end. ❤
My first girlfriend dedicated this song to me after I broke up with her. She passed a few months after high school graduation. Still brings a tear to this day.
My then-boyfriend broke up with me the week before my birthday, just a few months after my mom passed away. This song was SO meaningful at that time and proves that music can sometimes reach you when nothing else does. In hindsight, it was good that we parted ways, as it left room for my now-husband to come into my life, but boy - when it happened, I don't think his timing could've felt any more painful with that breakup.
@@mattbecham597 I'm not quite understanding your comment? It shouldn't be hurtful to lose someone you love, at a sensitive time, after just experiencing the very traumatic death of a parent? I don't know you, nor you me, but that was a really jerky thing to say. Wow.
@@mattbecham597 ah, ok. My apologies then for misunderstanding. It didn't have anything to do with him buying me a gift. I think that might have been easier to deal with. I'd have just loved and appreciated some support and compassion around that time, even as a friend. So this song was super poignant then. Again, my apologies.
My husband and I got to be in the Bearsville Studio when Randy was rehearsing for his Tokyo tour. So we were lucky to hear this song in person. We then went to his brother and sister in-laws house to have dinner with him. He was a lovely gentle person.
I just mentioned you guys needed to react to this song to someone just yesterday. Finally, happening. Sadly Randy is no longer with us. A Soft/Yacht Rock classic from the 70's.
Missing my husband this Father's Day. I was left widowed at 41 with 5 kids, ages 6 to 23. The kids and I miss him so much and so angry the younger kids didn't get to know what an amazing dad they had. He left just when we needed him most.
After losing his father when he was 12, his Mum moved the family to Looe in Cornwall UK three years later. It was here that he began writing songs and playing the folk clubs around Cornwall. He wrote, " Just When I Needed You Most " at the age of 18 with Tony Wilson of the group Hot Chocolate. Eventually he was signed to Bearsville Records New York and after a move back to the States at 23, the song became a hit in 1979. However after a move over to country music he became a very successful songwriter for many country artists which have been mentioned in the comments. He was sadly to die at the age of 48 in 2004. 😢 Beautiful song, and relatable to a lot of people. 🎶💔
Randy wrote a lot of amazing songs in his short time here on Earth. Many of his songs were re-sung by other artists like Dolly, Kenny, and Alabama. His song I'm In a Hurry (And Don't Know Why) was originally performed by him and did well, but it was taken to #1 by Alabama. Sadly, leukemia cut his life short. RIP Randy. You were amazing while you were here.
Most people don't realize all the great songs that Randy wrote because so many other artists used his material. I remember when Randy died back in 2004, almost 20 years ago already, that does not seem possible. Randy was only 48 years old when he passed away from Leukemia and we lost a great talent, his life was cut way too short.
The chorus came immediately to my mind back when my grandfather passed away in 1990. The part when he says you left me just when I needed you most. Even tho he was 100 yrs old, still wasnt ready from him to go.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time! I loved it when it came out when I was a little girl, and I love it now at nearly 54! Glad you gave it a listen! He had a lot of success writing country songs, so it's funny that you brought that up. And Amber, Dolly recorded a cover of this that you will love! Sadly, Randy Vanwarmer died in 2004, at just 48 years old. He had leukemia. What a gorgeous voice, and heartbreaking song.
I haven't heard this song in years not since I was a kid but I immediately recognized the title. Beautiful song beautiful voice. Loved it even as a kid.
SHOCKED !! Never heard this artist before but what a beautiful song and his voice is so clear and pure !!! Will need to check out more ! Thanks to those that suggested him ! 🙏🏼🤘🤘❤️🌈
Hey guys, I remember the first time hearing this song on BJ105 Orlando. I think part of this song was to honor his Dad. His Dad passed away, and then Randy was moved to England to live with his mom. Shortly after that he wrote this song. So, yeah, you know for whomever he wrote it, he did love them.
How embarrassed do you think the American Idol, Auto-Tune generation feels when they listen to someone like this who gets by on they're God given talent!
John Sebastian, of the Lovin’ Spoonful, did the amazing autoharp solo on this recording. It’s a stunning performance and a stunning song. Some of the commenters mention Dolly Parton’s cover of Just When I Needed You Most. John Sebastian, again, provided the autoharp break on that recording.
Isn’t that song precious? My friends and I use to harmonize this song! I thought we sounded pretty good! “Just when I needed you most” was our favorite part!
This is a UK appearance on a tv show...Likely Top Of The Pops. The band is a put together conglomeration using mostly the house-band from the show, and the backup singers are actually dancers from Legs Inc. Sadly, their producer/Manager Albert Grossman would not allow him to perform on television or make any videos, because he didn't think Randy's image would be conducive to album sales. So Randy went to England and did so there.
There is something wrong with you, no matter who you are, if this song doesn't bring tears to your eyes. The vocals, the lyrics, the musicianship, everything about this song is truly amazing
I went to high school with Randy in Evergreen, CO. This was a huge hit for him. He wound up leaving performing for writing, moved to Nashville and wrote big hits for Alabama and The Oak Ridge Boys.
My mom used to sit at the kitchen table and cry while listening to this song. The three year old me didn't understand at the time that my dad had just left us. To this day, it's still the saddest image in my memory 😢
A similarly understated singer from the UK was Clifford T Ward. He was championed by the legendary BBC DJ, Sir Terry Wogan, because of his love for Clifford's masterpiece, 'Home thoughts from abroad'. Clifford wasn't a huge commercial success, but has a loyal following among those of us who can appreciate the honesty, emotion, and poetry he puts into his songs. Try some CTW, & see what you think. As well as 'Home thoughts from abroad', his song 'Gaye' was pretty big for him, especially in South America!
Now this is real music. I was in my early 20’s when this came out. I had a long distance romance where we fell in love at first sight. But sadly, long distance romances are difficult to keep going. I miss her even today.
The first time I heard this song was shortly after my first wife left me and it was a perfect description of where I was. I'd been laid off the second time in seven years and then found a better paying job that required us to move out of state and our children were still in school. We talked it over and visited the new job site together, courtesy of the company that hired me. We had our plans made and I took the job. Ten weeks later she told me she wanted a divorce, just a few weeks before our 19th anniversary. It took me two years to (mostly) recover from it. That's been almost thirty years, all that's left is a lingering bitterness.
I always loved this song and decided recently to have a listen to some of his other music. I started with Suzi Found a Weapon and ended up buying that entire vinyl album. Then I bought The Third Child and was floored...so many good songs. I always wrote him off as a one hit wonder. Now I am a huge fan of his entire catalog. So under-rated!
There isn't a song that you react to that I don't know. Usually I know them very well and feel passionately about them. BUT, and this is a big BUT, I don't always know who the artist is behind the song. So it is always fun to uncover the mask here on your channel. This is a prime example. I know this song very well but I have never heard of or seen Randy Vanwarmer. Though I will say that his sound is so similar to so many other artists of this period like Ambrosia, Billy and the Beaters and Toto.
Beautiful song, thanks 😊 please consider Leo sayer.... when I need you trust me its Beautiful also. Love the music you have been doing, keep up the great job 👍 😊❤
