But if we're trying to teach Jay about Mariah... as a young man who would never have intentionally listened to that type of music at the time, it was Emotions and that ridiculous "whistle register" that made me sit up and take notice. It's also more fast paced. He's not into the ballads.

I'm repeating myself from another comment, but I think Emotions has to be the first, to get Jay on board. Those insane whistle notes she hits felt like they had to be fake the first time I heard it. Plus it's a little faster paced. Hard to believe that he hasn't heard Fantasy by now, especially when it became a hit all over again from that Free Guy movie.

Dolly said she first heard Whitneys version of IWALY in the car on the radio driving home, and she was so stunned she pulled over, (and with admiration) knew Whitney owned it. Dolly has also said when she recorded IWALY (written by her on a tour bus on a napkin struggling with going solo leaving Porter Wagner, and Dolly so caring, the emotions involved, of leaving her mentor, bless) that when she, Dolly, recorded IWALY she was "able to put some $ in the bank." When Whitney recorded IWALY she "was able to buy the bank." Dolly has ALWAYS been a brilliantly smart at business. Much respect.

THE VOICE. Period. The first 2 albums were amazing (this was off her 2nd album), but her masterpiece, in my opinion, was I'm Your Baby Tonight. That album was on another level. Absolutely agree with I'm Your Baby tonight album, it has so many of my favourite Whitney tracks - the duet with Stevie Wonder We Didn't Know, the Luther co-written and produced Who Do You Love, I really need to dig that out and have another listen.

She had multiple hits through the 80's/early 90's. For her showcasing ballad vocals, check out "Almost Over You", "For Your Eyes Only". Whitney's first two big hits seem to be forgotten or overlooked these days, but they are great. Saving All My Love For You and You Give Good Love made her a big star right away when she was 21-22. Her first two albums went to #1 for long periods of time in 1985-7.

"So Emotional" was Whitney Houston's 8th single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and, at that point in time, the 6th of 7 consecutive #1 hits. "SE" peaked @ #5 on the R&B chart & was #1 on the Dance chart for 2 weeks. "SE" was released in the October of 1987 and continued to chart into 1988. There's a reason Whitney was known as The Voice. This is one of my faves. You should check out the music video/live performance of Didn't We Almost Have It All. That blew me away and solidified her voice as a true powerhouse. I usually don't like remakes of songs but she killed the remake of Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman. Her icon status became permanent with the Dolly Parton written song I Will Always Love You. It's a great song that I grew to dislike only bc it was played all the time everywhere. It's from the hit movie The Bodyguard starring Whitney and Kevin Costner. But seriously, every Whitney song is fantastic and she gives her all on every record. Love your channel and stay blessed!

Whitney was phenomenal. My favorite song by her is "Shoop" aka "Exhale". Unlike the power vocals she usually gives that song is perfectly in the pocket. Just makes me feel good all over. My favorite Mariah Carey song was not very popular but she just sang her butt off on it. It's called "Lead The Way". She actually sings the whole last part of the song in one breath it's like over 30 seconds absolutely AMAZING!

This song was so damn sexy without being vulgar. Artists don't seem to know how to do that anymore. Love the simplicity of this one - guitar, drums, vocals. And those vocals - ouch! Love when she does that little raspy bit.
