congratulations on a 2k pepino and that it tasted good. Another informative video thank you and i have high hopes for my baby pepino. I've only been gardening on the Mid Nth Coast for 9 months after living in Northern Rivers so your info very useful in a cooler climate. may your green thumb be healthy

Thanks! Welcome to the fabulous world of fruit gardening :) You are extra fortunate to be in a subtropical area. I have lost thousands of dollars over the years attempting to grow my favourites like Rollinia, Soursop, Jackfruit, Mango and Panama Berry, which will all work north of Sydney :)

This fruit grows all the way down to central Chile, actually probably originated in Perú or Ecuador. In Chile it is grown on oceanic climate, because it doesn't like big temperature fluctuations. It's usually planted from cuttings each year, like an annual, but it's actually a perennial plant.

I just got one. What fertilizer do you use and how often? I was thinking of growing in a container but not sure size. Do they have spreading roots?
@RealLifeFruitopia

It's roots spead and it dries out in summer, so a large pot might be a good idea. I've never fertilzed mine, only mulch.

That is a whopper pepino. Congratulations on unlocking the planting etiquette to have those gems manifest to that size.!! I was paying $3 USD for ones that fit in my hand. Looked like a cantaloupe size. Was unaware for ripening many wait until flesh is soft. I did not ripen mine well enough and must’ve misread wiki or wherever I read to wait until the yellow between the purple stripes is almost gold. Their must be more varieties because yours didn’t have any purple stripes. George do you have jackfruit out there? That is crazy as they get up to 70 lbs. have you tried Haitian Mangoes? I wonder how many mango species their is. Sorry I’m straying off. Great videos and super informative. Last question is maybe try drying them?

Jackfruit is challenging, together with papaya, haven't yet had success with either due to the long wet winters. Pepino on the other hand grow like weeds.

@@RealLifeFruitopia .. ok guessing it is in comparison to your location George being a tropical region for papaya & jackfruit to which the soil needs to accommodate more moist fertile soil. I bet constant humidity is another factor.

Yes you can. They need a lot of water in summer.

Maybe it needs to ripen a little more? I haven't yet tried one.

Hi George great video, quick question are there different types of pepino and what do you think is the best for Victoria?
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 4 года назад
There are a few varieties, I've only grown the one shown in the video, Kendall Gold bought from Bunnings. It should be fine in most parts of Victoria, other than alpine.

what variety is it? I wanna start growing it but I want a really sweet and tasty variety...

I grow Kendall Gold variety bought from Bunnings Australia. It's very sweet when fully ripe but fruit fly beat me to it in summer, so I pick sooner.
