Melons have been not just my favorite fruit, but my favorite food, since I was a toddler. ❤ If I had to live on just one type of food it would be melons, cantaloupes, watermelons, and honeydews in that order.

It's actually the same genus as tomato. It's a nightshade.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 лет назад
Yes! I found that out after I reviewed this. There's a subtitle saying so in the video somewhere.

Yes, I saw this after I made the comment. Thanks for reviewing this fruit again. I'm growing them but haven't tried one the fruits from my plant yet. Tried 3 different store bought ones -- very bland and boring.

You'll like them so much more!

that's "pepino de fruta" or fruit pepino . it's not related to cucumbers, it's a nightshade. it's very common here in Chile, it grows in fall-winter season and it's very cheap. its eaten when its ripe and tender, it should be very sweet and juicy. delicious!!

Thanks for making these videos. You show me fruits that i've never know existed and now want to try. There is a need for this on the internet and you are the only person doing it. I'm sorry that you don't get many views. On another note: Are you interested in changing your intro theme music wise at any time in the near future? if so reply and i will expand on the idea.

The skin and flesh go a deep yellow color when fully ripe and they taste a lot more like a sweet cantaloupe. They can be astringent when under ripe.

Great that you did this! Looks like I'm going to have to grow myself one. They started growing them in Turkey, and they were always sold unripe.

I just planted one that has started to flower already. I have been conned a lot of money by China seeds sellers trying to get Pepino melon seeds. Finally able to buy a plant so rare.

The salty kind of feeling you get is umami, probably because there is some MSG in it. I don't know for sure, but there is in tomato and that's what makes them savory, so if they are related it's very likely that it it the cause :)
@trench01
@trench01 7 лет назад
despite that you found some fruits before why not try them again in that new location since they might taste different kind of like how their are so many varieties of apples. Also it would be good to know the exact location on a map where you got them if others want to try it if they visit the place.

Thats why I reviewed this again. There are also a couple other fruits coming up that I reviewed before but I thought needed a quality update.

I had one of these today it was soft but it still tasted like cucumber. I think if they are picked too early they soften but don't ripen

@robertopizzicato

Hey have you tried stinkingtoe fruit? I'm from Puerto Rico and basically everyone hates it here (we call it Algarroba) but there are people (older people) who love it! The texture is powdery and it sticks to the roof of your mouth and it has a somewhat cheesy smell. People used to use its seeds to play but that tradition is almost dead. I've heard the tree is endangered because it's good for wood and nobody wants to eat its fruit. I haven't seen a tree in a while.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 лет назад
I have! I tried it in Colombia, video will be up in a couple months. I didn't hate it, but wouldn't eat it for pleasure

Think one could be ripened in a paperbag, w/an apple for a couple of days? Yestetday was 1st time l've ever seen one, so l got one. It's more yellow than green. A tad bit soft, but not as much as one in vid. Have a habit of buying exotic fruits & veggies, to attempt to grow my own. Am excited to see if l can locate & grow some of the lcecream Bean (?), mentioned in vid.

I have been growing these in my yard in San Francisco area for a few years. They're closely related to tree tomatoe. Mine taste like a juicy cantaloupe mixed with tomatoe when ripe. They look like a mini watermelon, green and black striations, yellow flesh.

You should go to Costa Rica and try Cas (a kind of guava which is tangy and makes the best juice), carao (a pod full of medium sized seeds covered in a hersheys syrup like pulp), guava (not what it means in english, actually its also a large pod which contains large seeds covered in a juicy cotton candy like pulp), guineo (a kind of banana), tacacos (podlike fruit which is added in soup), jocote (a fruit with almost no flesh but with a unique taste), coffee cherry, wild berries, pejibaye, a good soursop, many different types of guava (güisaro, guayaba, cas, guayaba rosada, etc), rose apple and many many more.

I picked up one of these at my local Kroger in Ohio today. While I was in the produce section I checked your channel to see if you had reviewed this cute little melon and of course you had, lol. Now that I'm home and watching this vid I'm disappointed, my pepino is pretty hard. I'll give it a few days and see if it softens up a bit....I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying your content.

Just found your channel today and have really enjoyed watching your videos. Have you tried Blackcurrents? I didn't know until recently that the cultivation of them is actually banned in the USA (or in most states at least) - being from the UK it's really common. I guess that's "weird" enough to count right?
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 лет назад
Thanks! Yes I reviewed them a while back, the ban has been lifted from what I can tell, but with that gap in history they are very rare here now.

Are you making these videos while in South America or after you have already returned? A South American fruit I would love for you to review is called cocona. I'm growing them in California but mine haven't fruited yet.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 7 лет назад
I've been back for a while now. Cocona was on my "must find" list but sadly... I didn't find one. Might not have been in season. Hope yours grows well for you. I'm heading to CA in a couple weeks btw, any tips on places to fruit hunt?

Bit late on the reply, but ripening fruit just takes time sitting out. Usually fruit is picked before it's ripe for a longer shelf life, but most fruit are better when you wait for it to ripen on the plant.

I am traveling and its not worth checking a backpack. So the cost of that is ditching my knife whenever I board a plane. If I'm only in a place for a short period of time I don't bother and make due of what I can find. So here you get plastic.
