Here is another joint reaction with my buddy @SpencerJoyceMusic from @EmbraceTheSuck21 This was such a powerful SONG!!! @Sabaton @SabatonHistory #sabaton #christmas #live #reaction
Hannes playing the first man over the top gives me chills. The Generals on both sides were horrified by this event ("What do you mean - everyone just decided to stop fighting?") and threatened savage punishments if it was ever repeated. If any event in WWI makes you realise just how tragic a waste of of millions of lives it was, this is it.
Lots of Christmas truces happened in 1914 on the west front and a few on the east front. Communicating with the enemy and sometimes even visiting each others trenches was not that uncommon. Some truces were just to be able to retrieve the fallen, others were more friendly and included exchanging food and such. The truces were gone by 1915 when the long suffering in the trench war made any friendly feelings towards each other disappear.
Floor does it again and again - she makes something divine out of everything. It was only 6 years ago that I visited the Monument of Christmas Truce on the former front line with my school class and met school classes from France and England there. Afterwards we all went out for coffee together and talked about the history and the perversion of the wars. Without christmas truce, we would probably never have met. I have fond memories of that day.
Such an emotional song. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear and see this. Afterwards a lot of the soldiers refused to fight their new found friends and so they were relocated to other parts on the frontline and some of them were court martialled. The original cross is situated south of Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. This video was made during the covid lockdown and I am glad you let it run till the end. Everybody who was involved making it deserves a lot of credit!!
Thanks for this song. No matter how much I listen to this, I still can't stop crying. And thank you very much for Floor's vocals. "Lest we forget". This is what is written on the Cross. And what we always write in chat when we see this inscription. Thanks for the review.
Epic story by the great band Sabaton! And who else, than our Valkyrie Goddess, who would sing and lead those who had fallen on the battlefield to the halls of Valhalla !!!! How they approach the history of war is unique. They don't glorify war, they don't choose sides, but they highlight the humanity of soldiers, the depth of their courage and sacrifice. They make you proud of soldiers of many nations, because you are proud of their humanity. And Sabaton use their music to tell their stories, so they are never forgotten. They show a respect and an understanding that is rare. It is a deep rabbithole, but extremely rewarding, if you are open to those stories. Sabaton and Nightwish have some connections. Hannes (Sabaton Drummer) is Married to Floor Jansen. They are the best storytellers, they don’t play music, they play feelings, they have the most amazing couple in metal and they have the most devoted fanbase. If there is a war in metal, the Nightwish Army and the Sabaton Army would be allies. PS: “Lest We Forget”- is Sabaton’s mantra. They are not political but sing about sacrifices, heroics on mostly military history !!! 🤘😎🤘.
This particular video should be played with fully and shown on gigantic screens for those on the "front line" who doesn't have a slightest piece of humanity within nor any sort of deeper thoughts on : "Why we are fighting?" Where ever the fighting ground exist, where there's a conflict going on, right at this very moment too... Like what the effing is happening in the "holy land", in the Crimean area, not to mention dozens of other situations around the wörld... Military industry representatives are only scrupping their 'filth - of - sweat + blood + tears' - hands on another while dollar signs are just flashing in their eyes, day by day, month after another, from year to year. Seems like some groups of human kind hasen't learned even a drip of sh1t from the past, from the history... 🙉💥😖
Hey guys. This song _always_ gets me, right when Pär is walking towards the cross in 2021, and carves the year on it. So, so powerful, especially leading into Floor's operatic aria of the chorus. Happy holidays, gents. "Lest we forget."
The County that I live in here in England had it's own Regiment in WW1 and the 2nd Battalion of the Regiment was involved in the Christmas Truce, this song is one of the Sabaton songs that is very close to my heart as well as there re make song " 1916" which is about the PALS BATTALIONS who were Regiment's formed in Northern England, where friends, relatives, work mates and nieghbours formed local Regiment's. Back to Christmas Truce the actual Football used in the Christmas Truce of 1914 was from a Soldier of the London Irish Regiment, the Football survived the battlefields of WW1 and is still around today in the London Irish Regiment's Museum at there Barracks in London. BRITISH SABATON FAN 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🏴💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Aside from the fact that everything about this video is *perfect*… To me one of the most powerful pieces of imagery is when they’re singing “when the battle had commenced” - and on “commenced” the piano is obliterated, yet the cross still stands. Incredibly moving stuff!!!
This wooden cross is in the same place to this day... and the common grave of fallen soldiers from both sides of the battle. Greetings from Poland 🤗 Thank you for your video !
My grandfather joined the British army in 1913 and was part of the first contingents sent to France. While all of his stories have been lost, there's a good chance he was part of this truce. There would be no wars if the soldiers had a voice. To stay with the Christmas theme, check out a very pregnant Floor singing "O Holy Night" in Finnish at Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas, a charity event) "Oi Jouluyö" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ym1Wc5dmUYc.html
I'm so glad you checked it out too. It's very moving especially when we know it's a true story. Who could imagine!?! Another excellent history lesson is their cover of Motorheads "1916". If I had this kind of teaching in history class, I would have LOVED it so much! Thank you so much for this!
This is such a powerful song and video. Tommy covered this on his own channel as well. He also covers other Sabaton stuff to the tune of Disney songs 'Disneyton.'
This song is the best Christmas song I have ever heard. It is at my playlist for a while now. Every time I get chills and it brings tears to my eyes. And the story! That is the ultimate Christmas Story. So true and up-to-date.
5:20 how it started was a 16 year old British soldier who poked up and yelled out “MERRY CHRISTMAS FRITZ” as a fun joke. A young German soldier called back out in broken English “YOU NO SHOOT AND WE WONT MERRY CHRISTMAS “ the young British soldier decided to get out of the trenches with his hands up. The German soldier met him in the middle of no man land. The sergeants and officers weren’t the most happiest but they agreed. Both British and Germans even exchange where they lived so the other can visit when the war is over…. I’m not sure if that ever happened
Thank you for a great reaction! As usual :) I have seen Sabaton a couple of times, and they are really the masters of creating music and lyrics to historical events. This one is really a masterpiece, and with Floor singing during the ending credits. WOW!!! Since you also like Tommy Johansson and Majestica, and you are looking for christmas songs, you really sould check out Majesticas " A Christmas Carol " Songs like "Ghost of Marley" "Ghost of christmas past" and "The joy of christmas" are incredible.
What I love about Sabaton as a history nerd is that make history cool with out bias. They just tell good stories. History is always more interesting than fiction, because history does not have to make sense. Fiction always makes sense at least to the author. It is a shame that our education system sucks so bad they do not tell the truth or even the stories that Sabaton tells.
This year I was at the Sabaton concert in The Netherlands, just a week after my wife died with my children. Then this song came and everyone lightened their cellphones and I just couldn’t stop crying! But it did me good, I was happy that I could make this memory with my kids!!!
Thank you for doing this. It is an amazing song about an incredible event. I was pleased that you realized it was Floor singing at the end. Many reactors miss that.
carrol of the bells my great great grand father was on a part of the truce didn't happens began the war as 1st class ended 1st lieutenant, died 2 week before the cease fire
The song that was utilized there, was actually an Ukrainian song "Schedryk" (Щедрик). It's a New Year's song, known in English as "The Little Swallow". It was arranged by composer and teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916.
Schedryk which carol of the bells is based on was written in 1914 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych but was 1st performed on 25th December in 1916
@@kathnunan641 Interesting. Where did you take those dates? Actually the tune itself is from much older Ukrainian folk song and dates back to pre-christian period. Leontovych worked on the editing of the folk song for many years. He presented the first variant in 1901 and since then regularly wrote new revisions and released the final fifth version in 1919. The first performance according to my data was on 29 December 1916 in the Kyiv Merchants' Assembly Hall.
I loved this one, also made me wish to experience someone sing a modern song in the trenches back then just to see how the soldiers react or think back then hearing it
Great reaction. NOW you and your bestie need some Sabaton live. Swedish pagans, live at Wacken 2019. They use both stages at the same time. One with former members and one with current members playing together. AND Tina Guo on cello. You will not regret it.
It is interesting to see Joakim Brodén, the vocalist, playing the keyboards which he does on the records, but live is released from the keyboards to be their very active singer. Joakim has talked how he has in several songs he has used Swedish Lutheran church chords and choir sounds so no wonder @SpencerJoyceMusic heard the "christmassy sounds".
Hi Best Friend! Love your buddies reaction. This video is heart stopping. On Sabatons page, they have a whole section of history of every song. Happy and blessed Thanksgiving to you and yours.
I read a story, which has soon independent verification, that around a few years back two guys were in line at a NYC coffee shop. One of the dudes was wearing a Sabaton t shirt and this song came up. Turns out their grandparents had exchanged photos in this event, both had passed, and they both, in this coffee shop were now carrying those photos having inherited them...
Great reaction. Anyway, can i request your reaction to superb band from japan? The band is call "Lovebites" They all The Beautiful Queens Metal band right now in the earth. They are really really World class musicians. Phenomenal. And they have a lot die hard fans too. The song is "The Hammer of Wrath" Hope you check out, and can enjoy it too. Big thanks🙏
Just watched Samaltau by Dimash and now this… I‘m crying non stop 😭 This music is So beautiful. 😍 Wasn’t there in WW1 a period where there was a battlefield where the soldiers refused to fight for a long time. They played football (soccer for you Americans 😉) and then got back into their trenches and then shot above the heads of each other every day. Until someday some general forced them to fight for real…? Was this the same event as in this video? Fun fact: The music to Carol of the bells is actually not a Christmas song. It‘s actually an Ukrainian song that celebrates springtime called Shchedryk (ukrainian Щедрик) Then someone put english lyrics on it. And now it’s a Christmas song. 😂😊
If you are looking for Xmas songs, Tarja has a wealth of mind-blowingly brilliant versions of some Xmas songs. She has made videos of all 12 songs from her latest album "Dark Christmas". You might not think you needed a metal version of Rudolf The Reindeer or Frosty The Snowman but believe me you do. Also, have you heard Floor and Marco singing "Ave Maria"? Know that you already know Pentatonix, but if you haven't heard it already, I'd recommend their version of "O Come All You Faithfull". Also I'd heartily recommend Home Free's "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer". Last but not least, You MUST listen to the Piano Guys version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel".
Caroling of the bells ;) This is the only Christmas Carol I need, stuff Mariah, ..........can't stand that song!! Glad this hit you guys hard, Sabaton hit hard, and I love it.
Can't remember who it was that noted. They entered No Mans Land, greeted each other as humans, then split into two teams to "fight" each other at football. - what changes?
have you heard the name anna von hausswolff? she is awesome, her band is awesome, her voice is awesome. she runs her own metal-lable, pomperipossa records. she started her career using a piano and changed to pipe organ for her second record. eversince she is using pipe organ for her music and also studying it. she toured last year europes biggest churches with her instrumental pipe organ only album "all thoughts fly". i needed an analysis video to understand the compexity of it. anyways, when she had a concert in paris, some hundred catholic extremists blocked her and the audience from entering the venue and accused her for satanism, which is completely ridiculous. she played this gig a couple of days later secretly for the ticket holders in a protestantic church. one has simply to love her! check out "stranger" live session or "funeral for my future children" live with her band (not the one in the church, please. this version is awesome, too, but the band version is a bit wilder) OR "evocation" music video! her album dead magic starts with tree absolut epic songs. another interesting work of her is music for the swedish ballet, composed by mikael karlsson, used for a midsummernights dream and the nobel peace prize gala dinner ( with the royal family in the audience) ballet: how many more of these? and they hoped for a name/delta sleep nobel prize: courage.
