💔 R.I.P. lead singer Gary Brooker who we lost just a month and a half ago. He was one of the 20th century's great rock voices! 🎤

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat. In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen. Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein. The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

I had the distinct honor and privilege to accompany Procol Herum in 1997 at Star Light Theater and 2004 and 2006 at the Lyric Opera House as the Concert Pianist for the K.C. Philharmonic Orchestra. The band was a phenomenon. Gary Brooker's voice was spell binding. His Passing in Feb was a tragedy to the music world and I lost a great friend. Astonishingly enough his voice never failed him.

This was recorded 39 years after the band first released this song. Gary Brooker never lost his voice or his passion! RIP, sir. You are sorely missed.

This is one of the only songs that I am aware of that actually got better when performed live four plus decades after it was released. Gary Brooker was a legend!

This song was the backtrack to the 'Summer of Love' 1967. Everywhere you went, you could hear this blasting out of radios. Gary died from cancer at 76 years old. He will be sadly missed.

That quality of voice only comes by thousands of hours of singing. That's what made those vocalists from the 40's 50's 60's and 70's so great.

I remember when they came out with this song in 1967. It was just the 4 guys. Every time I watch this live version, I cry. Gary Brooker's voice is even better 40 years later. We lost him Feb 19, 2022. Thank goodness he lives on in his music & his beautiful performances.

I love watching young people's reactions to the misic of my youth. There were so many great musicians and singers back then. I feel so grateful to have lived in that era and had my musical taste formed then.

It's nice to see the younger generation appreciate the music, I grew up with.

I’m 53 years old and this song came out when my mom was five months pregnant with me in 1967. I grew up to this amazing song and it’s been on every playlist I’ve ever made throughout my life. So sad that the singer died a few months ago. So many of the great musicians of our time passing away lately. Thank you for keeping the music alive.

As a singer, I'm sure you'll appreciate that the late and amazing Gary Brooker sounded exactly like that when the song was released in 1967 when he was about 21. GAWD! WHAT a voice. I was 15 when the song was new. I am now an old man who recently retired from a lifetime of playing music for a living. I was gifted with a 3 1/2 octave range (But probably down to three now that I no longer sing regularly). I would cheerfully have murdered my entire circle of friends (Kidding.?). if I could only have sung like Mr. Brooker. Some singers get power. Some get range. Some get tone. Gary Brooker had everything any singer would ever need and more. Thank you for featuring Procol Harum and for listening with "open ears". It'll be a long time before another Brooker comes along. I was sixteen when this song came out in 1967. The band's debut single hit # 1 in the UK and stayed there for SIX weeks! It sold over ten million copies and was played throughout the Summer of Love. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney were enthralled by the Chaucerian wordplay and heavenly Baroque accompaniment.

I was due to see them in London, in February, and was so looking forward to it. Then Gary passed away and the dream was over. There will always be this spine-tingling video to watch, however.

I love to see someone that is hearing the great Gary Brooker for the first time. Gary was a good singer when this song came out. I often tell people that Gary is like fine wine. As he aged, he got better and better. The Danish National Symphony Orchestra that accompanied Gary, is on of the finest orchestra's in the world, and helped make this great song even better. Great reaction.

If there was ever a contest of which video on you tube is the best of all time, this video would get lots of votes for sure. Gary's voice, two genre's meeting up at a castle in Denmark, and a song regarded as perhaps the vest R&B song ever recorded qualifies this as an all time great performance.

Sweet reaction.. I'm glad to see such classics exposed to newer generations. I heard the original group perform "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on their concert tour at Fillmore West in San Francisco (1967). The atmosphere was psychedelic, because of Bill Graham's light show, and a chemically enhanced reality. His voice and the organ (not a piano) cast a spell that is one of my favorite memories from that decade of so much amazing music.

Just when this came out, I was into prog-rock. They gave it that beautiful twist with Bach included and the magical singing. Here i like his voice even more… ❤️

I was 18 or 19 when this came out & there were so many great groups doing really innovative stuff at the time that frankly we were quite spoiled. Yup, really liked Procol Harum. Another great singing group during this period is "The Mamas & the Papas", listen to their "California Dreamin' ".

This version of this song is my favorite of all time. Having lost Gary Booker a short time ago was kind of a triple for me. I lost Gary Booker, William Hurt who I met fishing several years ago and my beautiful wife. I am not putting her last as she is always first. Just a different thing to lose the things you love most. Great reaction ! Gary just recently passed away but you should also listen to the original 1967 version to understand how we all felt ! Another of his, from the same concert, was Conquistador !

I first heard this in 1967 and loved it (as did many more) but it is absolutely true that by the time of this performance his voice had more depth and timbre; which is not always the case.

I'm so glad they came out with this production with the full orchestra before he passed.

This is awesome live in 2006 you'll be surprised how close it comes to the original release except for the orchestra you have to check it out that will blow your mind how good he did it back when he was a young man

I think Gary got some inspiration from Bach's Air on A string when they wrote the song and it is more sophisticated than just a pop song. So it fits in with the full ochestra etc al without missing a best so to speak. One of the all time classics.

It amazes me how many people say they're unaware of certain artists because they weren't born when they were going. When I was a young Beatles fan in the 60s, I knew about many artists who were popular before I was born. I always heard people talking about them or I read about them in magazines or saw them on TV shows or movies; there was no way I could avoid being exposed to them. For some strange reason that doesn't seem to happen with current generations. They seem unaware of anything that happened before yesterday.

John Lennon and Elton John both proclaimed this is the best song ever written and recorded. This is imo the greatest live performance ever. I wish I had experienced it that day.

Gary Brooker - great singer, great artist. RIP. This is one of those songs that really does take you back in time. I liked it when I was much, much younger in the late 1960s and saw the band in on Top of The Pops (an English music show) and I like it even more now. Somehow, good music can just take you back. You can almost 'smell' the time or era. And, musically that was a great time to be alive.

i love this song when i first heard it in 1967. i was 13 then and in Grade 7. after 39 years, Gary (rest in peace) did iit again. OH WOW goosebumps and tears as i reminisce my younger years.

Schnell, since you loved this one so much you should check out A Salty Dog from the same concert. Gary Brooker's (R.I.P.) vocals are phenomenal on it. Whiter Shade of Pale was their biggest hit but A Salty Dog is my favorite. Conquistador was also another hit that they performed at this concert.

Beautiful reaction Schnell, so emotionnal I must decompress into a little rant, talented musicians, singers interpreting unforgettable timeless pieces of music, created at a time when people people were sane, inspired and worked hard to create something special, we have lost so much in the last couple of decades, today most of what gets released is bland melodies, repetitive robotic beats, rap and hip hop the worst offenders, some say it's not worst than what came from the past,, it's just different... Oh it's different alright, it's CRAP! So called artits and singers who cannot sing, reciting vulgar lyrics just to provoke, pieces put together on computers in hours or days, while past artists kept composing and refining their pieces, sometimes working for months to create an album, plus they had to tour to sell records, part of the new generations arrogantly call themselves Progressives, dreamers of a better world spitting on past symbols and values with no inspired ideas inspirations to attain their unreallistic goals, ignorance, narcissism, push button and joysticks experts that feel so superior, yet when they turn away long enough from their phones, they can't even fathom how things works and have the attention spans of turnips... Tecnologies have progressed for sure, they don't use it to educate themselves constructively, more knowledge for education, yet more and more brainwashed dummies, great people in the Earth's basket, but so many rotten fruits present in the lot, will eventually make the whole basket go bad, thank God for preserved history and recorded media and covers of past greater art, only way to escape but for brief moments, today's sad state of affairs...
