This sucks, people who are getting into knives might end up with the new generation of fakes and think they are real and be turned off to good knives and companies...
Honestly, if the knives they're counterfeiting are actually decent, I don't see why they wouldn't just put forth the effort and start their own knife company. If they're good enough to excel in looking like real name brand knives, they might excel in actually being a knife company.
SoimVan Probably easier to make a knockoff and sell it for people on budgets that want a certain high dollar knifes look vs making your own designs. The work is done for you because you already know what is sought after, just copy it and throw a lower price on it.
Me. Personally. When I was younger, everything I owned was fake. LOL Until I grew up and realized something. That kind of represents you. As a person. If you are buying fake things and passing them off as the real thing. That shows what kind of character you're made of. Now buying something that's fake and admitting "Hey it's a fake but I loved the design and couldn't afford the real thing." That's a different story. But for me, personally, I don't buy them.
This is the reason I only buy from reputable dealers. Its crazy how close the fakes are to the real thing these days. If you didn't know what to look for most people wouldn't know the difference.
It was pleasant and surprising to hear that this fan of your followed you from age 13 to 18. But now that I think about it, I'm coming up on being a 5 year subscriber as well... time really does fly, especially when you're older.
I have a sog aegis which is garbage I got it from a hunting chain in Toronto. the lock does not work properly it untightens constantly, anyone know if its fake?
One thing to keep in mind though, these knockoffs were supposed to be sold in China as alternatives because we do not have easy access to legit brands. Knife collecting in China is technically illegal. Though no body really cares including the police, it is still extremely hard to purchase any legit foreign brand knives(or extremely expensive. A real Spyderco PM2 costs around $200 in China, most of the extra was used to pay for the "shipping and handling"), yet the local demand is big, and that's where knockoffs come to play.
So China churns out all these knives and they don't let their own people have them. This is why I buy USA stuff almost exclusively, when I can at least.
Jeff, where are your pipe tobacco preferences, if any, leaning these days? Have you sort of zeroed in on a certain style, i.e., Englishes, Balkans, VAs, VaPers? (I'm basically a straight VA and VaPer smoker with an occasional bowl of Penzance or G.L. Pease Westminster). Hard to say anything about the materials used in that fake. Could shear, chip, bend easy. I guess it might make a good beater. Definitely let us know with a follow-up. Finally, I would really appreciate you letting me know what you think of the CASE blade steels, both CV and SS. Been thinking of collecting a few, but if it is nothing beyond the quality of, say, a rough rider, I may just stick with better blade steels. I use everything I buy, so performance always trumps looks or pedigree.
i just bought a sage 1 and a squeak for 105 and 15 bucks on amazon and i'm afraid that the second one is fake although they're coming from the same seller. and frankly i wouldn't really mind if it was fake since i could return it easily, but more that i'm not gonna tell if it is. any good advice? i've only held like 2-3 spydercos in my life. so i'm not an expert.
Hey jeff of all the youtubers, even nutn, you have been the most consistant on your channel. Everyone "takes a break" for a month or so, follows some tactical fad. Lookin back, you have grown (and shrunk) and changed, but are still true to your core. Always a gentleman and really cool. Keep up the amazing work. You are a man of many hobbies and i think that makes for a cool dude and youtuber. Iv prob learned more from you than i did in high school lol. Mostly because we where probably very similar in that fashion cheech! As for the knife imediately i noticed the handle didnt have satin liners poping out. And on the real pm2 isnt the lanyard holl through the pocket clip? Also can you carry that for a bit and see if it takes an edge. If it does and the action can be KINDA worked in i would def buy for 20 bucks.
I handled a fake Military at our local flea market. This one was $50. It was smallish like a Paramilitary. All of my Spydees deploy smoothly out of the box. The fake one had a sticky blade. The jimping was sloppy and the black paint was runny looking on the spine jimping and inside the pivot area. The lettering looked different and was stamped a little closer to the handle. The liner lock was made of a different looking material than the titanium on my Millie. The G-10 was a little cheaper looking, and a little more raised. Everything else was pretty convincing. At a quick glance it did look like a Para 2.
Seeing these Spyderco knockoffs get me worried that the Delica 4 FFG that I just got off of ebay might not be the real deal. I'm pretty new to Spyderco and I like the knife but how am I to know it's real?
id say the box looks fake, from what i know on the real boxes the last number is really close "nearly touching" the lines. there also thicker. but again im no expert.
hey what i found as well to check spyderco for fakes easy method is to check the trademarked hole there should be a sign of the high carbon steal so it has layers in the hole where in a fake there is a smooth surface
One good reason to buy authentic stuff is that it supports the people who advance the state of the art, rather than supporting people who just try to sponge off other peoples' innovation and branding. If knockoffs were all that people bought, nothing would ever improve. We'd still be using sharp rocks to cut things.
i purchased off amazon a uk legal non locking spyderco and it came in a box like that one , i hope i got a real spyderco, im brand new to these type of knives and purchased spyderco because of its reputation, i forget how much i paid but it wasnt cheap also there is no play in it at all plus i picked one up at walmart for i think 46.00 in a sealed plastic but it just says spyderco on it there is no name otherwise and the metal its made of says 807 mov somthing like that , i just hope i didnt get a clone, could someone check out the non locking spyderco on amazon and let me know your thoughts on it , its the 1st one you see
Sometimes even the legit ones have laser etching errors like this. I've experienced this on both spyderco and benchmade. But I assure you it doesn't mean they are fake that depends on the blade finish and what not. But yes atrention to detail is important
I'm going to guess that it's an OEM that makes/made Spyderco stuff at some point and those are the ones that don't pass QA and don't qualify to get the Spyderco name on it. Check to see if it has the 'ding' (exact location changes per model, worth a look-up) of a faulty Spydie. Cheers.
the compression lock on the real one is much smoother and quicker. The logos are also darker, and on the real one you can tell the steel is great just by looking at it.
Personally these fakes don't bother me. I went and checked some out and I'm actually thinking about getting some, but I'm not going to try and tell people it's real. Most of the ones I'm looking at are ~$20 but are copies of $100+ knives. The only people that would buy the fakes can't afford the real deal so it's not really taking money from the genuine companies and it also lets me see if I like a design. Maybe it will encourage me to spend money on the real thing if I like it enough.
The obvious things you can look out for in the KO is the letter that's included uses very glossy paper when the real deal uses regular paper. Also, the engraving on the blade is a lighter color when the real one is darker.
Thousands of young people think you are awesome. So do I. I love the effect you have on our American community, (and worldwide community, as I think of it). I will be 60 next year. You just continue to love yourself Jeff, strengths and weaknesses combined, enjoy your hobbies, wife, pets, and family, and we will all stay subscribed. Do your best, don't sweat it when you are not perfect (For real - I haven't loved everything you have posted). I love how you treat young people as real people who are important and valued. OK, gag... enough bromance. But you are Da Man.
the spring in kershaw leek is not even that powerful. besides its spring assisted, it won't even activate unless you push it first. the spring doesnt have enough force to break the safety. so for the spring to activate something must have happened to cause the safety to break with is not the knife's fault
I had the "pleasure" of purchasing a fake PM as well, however this one is quite a bit closer to the original than mine... Mine has a good grind, looking better than on this one, but it has a liner lock (!) instead of the original compression lock, the screws are with rounded heads, and has no jimping on top or bottom edge. It has all the proper markings and signatures, not unlike this one. I doubt that the blade is really made of CPM S30V steel, but so far it's been holding an edge pretty well.
Are there any Clones or Knockoffs worth buying? or,,Similar products but less expensive than the Original. I understand that we pay for quality but we are also paying for originality. To me, Quality is Key! We are all looking for both inexpensive and quality products to make our lives easier and safer! Thx,,,
I just ordered a TAC NWO Spyderco copy. Not a clone or knockoff but it mimics a Spyderco Native in form and materials. By all accounts, it is true cpm-S35Vn steel sourced from the US and being assembled in China. There are no spyderco logos on it but some people have theorized that it is actually built from factory seconds because of how well made they are, minus the fit and polish of a real spyderco. I bought it for a project knife that I can spruce up and then beat the hell out of without feeling bad so I don’t wind up ruining one of my real spyderco knives. $39 shipped. Maybe I’ll buy an extra and send it to you to review. There is only one video of It online.
Dude, that website is ridiculous...I'm a guitar player and they have all sorts of tempting fakes...they also have fake medford knives, cold steel, etc...as well as some 5.11 tactical backpacks...all sorts of stuff. I really like that as someone with little income I can buy china made stuff, my reason I can't get into these is the brands! Why do they have to put the brands on! Feels way more wrong! lol, but it's all definitely interesting. I'll be interested in how this holds up.
i think this is so said, for us people who love our spyderco's and are willing to pay the extra to get the real deal, there should be a law banning copy's made from china,i don't support it and will never willingly buy one! or even show a unboxing of one of them.
It's one think cloning a design and calling it something else but out right copying the whole thing including the Manufacturer's name and etchings... This is outright stealing and robbing Spyderco! We should avoid at all cost giving these thieves a stage to market their stolen goods.
Blane Biondolillo: there is, just like there is a law that soliciters can't call you on your phone. Or that criminals can't lock up you computer and charge you a random to unlock it. To stop the ransom ware on your computer, all they have to do is go after the banksters that channel your money to the crooks. But it never happens because our government is corrupt.
I have a spyderco CPM S30v replica ,used it yesterday for splicing wood for campfire and it worked fine...it also is 1/4 the price of the original Spyderco.
Thx, CL. Unless you're broke, why buy junk? knives are tools and tools last a man's lifetime. If you work on cars or any skilled trade, you throw junk tools at the wall - they are repulsive to hold and when you think about it, a waste of resources. Can break or damage what you work on. No pride in craft.
So buying the tenacious i feel like im being robbed by spyderco because there letting the Chinese build them and sell them to us and spyderco is making a profit on us lets think about that one??
I have one of these...pretty good for twenty bucks. The pocket clip screws stripped when I tried to tighten them. That has never happened with my actual spyderco's
I just bought a regular military from cabalas and this video Has me looking at my knife so close! How do I know if its fake?!?! Would cabalas sell me a fake? I'm really concerned! The knife feels as solid as anything and the detail is really good. But that knife looks convincing too! I am like freaking out!
The reason this knife, and other knock-off knives, may be such good quality is that they may have been manufactured in the same factories as the "real" knives. Companies outsource manufacturing to China and in many cases help set up the factories. The factory managers will manufacture the branded goods during day shifts and meet their quota. Then, during night shifts they will manufacture the very same items "off the books" using the same tooling and perhaps even the same workers, and sell through channels other than the brand owner. So in essence, you are receiving the same product, but it's cheaper because you're not paying for the brand label markups. Not trying to excuse he factories for doing this as it's still illegal and unethical.
Congrats! ... As a role model, to young men everywhere, you should be touched and proud that you have introduced yet another impressionable minor child to the pleasures of smoking addictive and deadly substances. You are a boon to society.
phrankus2009 And you sir are a dumbass....every kid sneaks a smoke when they are young, or did mommy hold your hand everywhere you went...with social media, smoking is the last thing you should be worried about, ...what a fucking idiot..
I know some will probably hate me for this but i ordered a Fake Spyderco PITS, because i live in Germany and with our stupidly strict Knife Laws the PITS is the closest you get to a locking Folder. But i am not paying this extremely high Price Spyderco asks for. They really should make a budget Version of this knife, without Titanium Scales n Stuff to make it cheaper because some People like me do not have a second Option rn. I am 18 and still going to shool so there is no way i can spend around 400 Bucks on a Knife.
life long knife lover and collector and have just found your channel in the past two days and I just subbed and already think I'm gonna be a fan!! thanks and God bless you good sir.
You can always do a steel scratch test I got a clone on ebay that was supposed to be in zdp189 it was easily scratched by a cheap kitchen knife being in the mid 60s it shouldn't do that
I see a lot of negativity toward Chinese knock off knives in the comments. I guess the quote "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" doesn't apply to cutlery clones. I wonder if attitudes would change if the knife was an unlicensed spyderco tenacious that was an exact copy for half the price of a licensed one. People might think that it serves them right for outsourcing American jobs. Companies that send their manufacturing jobs to china are at risk of having indistinguishable duplicates flood the market.
One of the (many) problems with fakes/clones, IMO anyhow, is that they give legit Chinese mfgs. like Maxace, Rike, Reate, We Knife Co, etc. a bad name by association ... these guys put out a quality product, and they are not producing 'clones' - some may be "similar" in appearance to other knives, but they are not stamping blades with a Spydie logo and trying to pass them off as legit Spyderco products, for example. That's the big difference.
+SEPI AUSTIN Some do and some don't. I've seen some say the blade is D2 and its clearly not and some do advertise as 440c, 8cr13mov, and even S30v which is more believable since its lower grade steel. I wouldn't expect the best when it comes to fakes. Not saying some wont last for years but its hard to know what you really get.
The box is 100% fake. 1. There is no trademark on the bottom right of the spider. In the newer boxes, thats added 2. The foam inside the box completely covers the inside. (If this was a real box there would be a small space between the edge of the box and the foam. 3. The barcode on the side is totally fake. If it was a real spyderco box, the lines of the barcode go all the way down and touch the numbers. Also if real, spyderco uses actual stickers for their boxes. This isnt a sticker. As for the knife... there is small plastic bag the knife comes in... but its possible the original owner chucked it. The knife itself is a better fake than the box lol...except for the screws and warp in steel..
