The thing is, when people say x type of music isn't being made or all music is crap these days etc. (as I often do), we're talking about the mainstream. We can't possibly know about every band, and therein is the huge difference between now and then. The 70s and 80s were a time when great bands rose up. That rarely happens now. The music industry has collapsed into a myriad of online echo chambers driven by the streaming service algorithms.

The reason Dire Straits has a smaller fan base than other groups is because Mark's playing tends to break the brain of people who hear his awesomeness when they are unprepared. Your sacrifice is appreciated.

The fans got their money's worth this night. An outstanding performance. This live version is excellent. The tempo is ramped up over the original version, and the lyrics, in places, have been added to, but it is so great. The drummer was a little hyped up because apparently his father was in the audience, for the first time. Ocassionally, you can see Mark, the lead guitarist in the red jacket, look over at the drummer and smile. Such a fantastic performance.

He did not play these songs at the Dire Straits concerts and at his solo concert to promote his first solo album I think (Sailing to Philadelphia?) mixed with some Dire Straits music. I believe you immediately. But to catch up with his work ( I have to admitt I am more a Dire Straits fan than a Mark Knopfler solo fan) I will check them out. Although Espresso love does ring a bell, so perhaps it is Dire Straits. Thanks anyway for pointing this out. So untill now I never saw him using a plectrum. First time to your channel. Enjoyed it. My dire straight story. It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

If I was lucky in anything with regard to the time I was born it was music. The Seventies and Eighties were ablaze with such a variety of songs and styles, and no auto tune. When you went to a live show you got the the same sound of the song and the experience of it beyond the studio version. And if you were wise to it you looked up the influences which sent you back through rock and roll to the folk scene, and the jazz scene and the blues. I still love it even now. As for these guys you will do them all. Live. "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", and so many really. Just relax and enjoy. Great reaction by the way. Hope you and those you share time with have a fine and happy holiday. Be well.

I'd add Tommy Emmanuel to that list of Mark and David, but in a different way. When Eric Clapton says you're one of the best he's ever heard and played with and Chet Atkins certifies you as a guitar player (only a handful have Chet's CGP) you have to be doing something right! You only have to listen to 'Initiation' to hear the multitude of sounds an accoustic guitar can make with only reverb, echo, and tens of thousands of hours of practice and an understanding of the instrument and its functions. To think Tommy also can't read music and was self-taught. He didn't even know there was a bass player when younger and thought the bass line on the radio was also from the guitar, so he taught himself to play both lines at once!

I've always loved the guitar in bands and I remember watching a Documentary...20+ years ago they were talking to Pete Townsand (The Who) and he told the story of him taking his friend (Jimmy Page from guitarist and founder of Leg Zeppland) to see this American guitar player. Watching him play, he commented, basically, that guy is going to put us out of business. He was talking about the legend Jimi Hendricks when he went over to the UK at the beginning of his career.

Best live version of a song. I just missed Sultans of Swing first time around as I was around 12 but I fell in love with Dire Straits Brothers in Arms Album aged about 15. Money for Nothing was epic with the video at the time with the launch of MTV Europe. It was the first video to launch the show, with it's cutting edge CGI for the time. *I want my MTV*

Oh man you're in for a treat. The Alchemy concert is as fine a live show as you will ever see. Their final album, On The Night, is also a live one of superb quality. And that's before you delve into their studio work, Mark's solo career, his 'other band' The Notting Hillbillies, his albums with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris and all his movie soundtracks including Local Hero, Last Exit To Brooklyn and The Princess Bride among others.

I love your reaction, 'are they still touring?', lol. I don't know whether to laugh or cry', lol! They were huge and I am still astounded at how many people have never heard of Dire Straits, it breaks my heart. Mark Knopfler is now 75, and just released his latest solo album, and although he left the sound of Dire Straights behind, he never left his signature guitar sound and that lovely gravely voice and both still give me goosebumps when I hear them!

@@arisultanikI think it's simply because so many somehow seem to have not heard of Dire Straits let alone Mark. It's quite bizarre for a band that sold over 100 million records and were essentially the biggest music act in the world in the mid-80s.

First, I'd like to compliment you for the way you interject your thoughts without too many pauses. You have a very likable way about you that I first discovered when seeing your "Money for Nothing" reaction. Yes, Dire Straits is bad-ass. This song is one that I can listen to repeatedly and have been for many years. A real masterpiece. Fun fact: Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist wrote the song, "Private Dancer" which was performed at his request by Tina Turner.

Although the band in its entirety is fire, the drumming is phenomenonal here. It was the first time Terry Williams' father was in the audience to see his son perform, and consequently Terry was a bit hyped. You can see Mark Knopfler (lead guitar) smile occasionally as they were all challenged to keep up with the beat. This is just a fantastic performance. So glad I got to see them once in Milwaukee in 1985 during their Brothers in Arms tour. They are up there in my top ten bands ever. ❤️ 🎸❤
