The Philippines was so different then compared to now. You are absolutely correct when you commented that folks were dressed up nicely, the place looks less crowded and open, no informal settlers, folks took pride in themselves when traveling (this was before the age of mass travel brought about by the jumbo jets), well-kept home, and the buildings have character. Alas, those days are gone replaced by a concrete jungle, crowded streets, informal settlers, and dirty air. Thanks for sharing.

Well its their fault why they lost it. They dont want to educate Filipinos. They dont want Filipinos to become more free with their professions and give them more power to run their affairs. They just want complete control of everything. That is why we rebel but Americans came and subjugated us too. But under them Filipinos experienced prosperity and freedom that is why Filipinos fondly prefers USA but when it comes to Spain we just remember them as the ones who brought as Catholicism.

I remember De Dios Bus lines and at nearby Avenida we shopped at Oceanic, Shoe Mart (selling only shoes then) and went to Sta.Cruz church. A jeep ride from Avenida can take us to Rustan's San Marcelino where they usually had big sales every month. Stores then were "Ang Tibay" (shoes), Alemar's (bookstore), Aguinaldo's (department store) all Filipino owned. There were no holduppers in jeeps and no snatchers of bags then, very safe place.
