That's not what Louis said, he said at Marciano receiving the award for fighter of the century a few months before he was killed, that not only was Rocky the fighter of the century, but that he thought Marciano was the best Heavyweight Champion of all time...
BTW, Walcott, Moore, and Charles, all said the same thing. And years later Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali pretty much said the same thing. Food for thought, for all you naysayers. Even Don Turner said the same thing, you remember Don, trained the Klitchko's, and Evander Holyfield...
Too much editing. Couldn't figure out what was going on. Neither fought never wases, they fought the best available. Only one problem, there weren't many good ones. Maybe Roland La Starza.
You stick around the fight game too long...this sort of thing happens. Just look at Benny Leonard, Muhammad Ali, James Jeffries, Sugar Ray Leonard, and so many others.
Marciano is over hyped, but then again so is Louis; he held the title for so long because of WWII and a shortage of decent opposition; look up his record. Schmeling gave him a spanking, as did Walcott, no great shakes as a boxer( and worse as a ref! ) but on the wrong end of a dreadful decision, and Conn, a light heavy, had him beaten hands down but for the rush of blood to his Irish head. Could you imagine Ali or Liston losing to that trio? Flatfooted and pedestrian.
In 1950 'old' Joe Louis was the number 1 contender. This fight was 1951. Louis still had enough in the tank to bring it until Marciano wore him out in the later rounds. Yes, maybe Louis wasn't in his prime but that is something that can't be controlled. By the way, Louis was the odds on favorite to win that fight
