that made it so much easier, actually... in the previous system (classic), you had to compete with everyone on your side on your server for top weekly placement, and could then buy your honor gear for gold. lots of gold horde had no time to farm, btw. horde had no queue, while allies were stuck in queue for an hour. which meant the best horde team usually tried to lose ASAP against the best ally team: horde was able to collect waaaay more honor points on average, which made killing players the main source of honor for allies, and winning as quickly as possible the main source of honor for horde. because winning against the best group in an hour was the same as losing 5 rounds and winning 1 against randoms in 10 min each. oh, and place too high, you get shunned from your group; become only second on the server when you're rank 13, and you make no progress. you had to commit to at least 3 months of sleep deprivation if you wanted the pvp weapons as horde, while allies only had to be able to take 10-20 min breaks from work whenever they had to, and maybe the final 2-3 weeks off to gank outdoors. of course, the roles were reversed on a few servers (cross-server BGs weren't a thing yet), but ally got more players in total.
