Is it wide receiver of bust for the Bills in the first round of the NFL Draft? The Buffalo Plus crew of Dan Fetes and Jenna Cottrell join Matt to talk and debate about it.
I am team Dan during this discussion. I’m tired of not investing in receivers in the early rounds. This regime has invested in second and two 3rd round picks on running back, but haven’t drafted a wide receiver earlier than round four. I for one will be really disappointed if we don’t trade up to go get one of the top receivers of this class. Still saddens me we passed on DK METCALF and chose Cody Ford..
I’m a die hard Bills fan. My wife is a full on Disney adult. We have 3 little kids and live an hour from Disney. For the first time in a long time we were able to sit down and listen to a podcast together tonight. Thank you.. it was beautiful.
Beane fast forwarded the process and I think he regrets it. That’s “why now” IMO. I really get the feeling he looked at the top 3, with Diggs being an asshole, and just said WTF…
We cant keep getting average w.r and hoping josh makes them above average. How many times did josh hit these dudes right in the hands and they dropped it. I want to see what allen looks like with actual nfl w.r. not dudes who would prob be 3rd string in the xfl
Matt Bove my man your the best realistically human doing sports I can tell and a good father husband ! Keep up the great work reporting buff sports. Rip your father as well 😊
Just like Beane tipped us off abt the Mitch Morse move I believe he said they need a guy to take the heat off of Digs they gotta go Wr in the draft ! Go Bills !
Defending Dan...once again. 1) A better offense with a full year Brady, which also includes a new strong WR who can stretch the field, means more targets for everyone. 2) The WR the Bills draft early this year is NOT Gabe Davis' replacement. He is Diggs replacement. I not concerned if his targets are down this year due to sharing targets with Diggs, Kincaid, Samuel, and Shakir. When Diggs leaves the Bills, this new WR will be expected to step up and be the new Him.
Absolutely agree 👍 we lack that true alpha home run threat. Diggs last 3 playoff games 0 tds. This season last 10-12 games Diggs held scoreless, it's his longest drought of his career. People take a while longer than us to see that problem in front of us. Perhaps a dominant X receiver competing with Diggs will inspire him to actually give AF.
STAY PUT AT #28. DRAFT Xavier Worthy. Then trade up in the 2nd round with a 6th , 7th and 4th next year to the 40th pick and draft Xavier Legette. Gives us speed on the outside. Shakir ,Samuel and Kincaid in the middle. The Xavier draft.
Bills are a better team today than last season. Say goodbye to the dead wood we needed to let go. Addition by subtraction. Bills will improve that in the draft, moving up to snag elite blue chip talent, i hope. Not interested in trading down and drafting 10, 11 or 12 mediocre players when we need 2 real impact players. A field stretching threat at the boundary receiver position who CAN go up and get Josh's dime bomb passes vs KC and we need a rotaional pass rusher who actually CAN get to Mahomes. The rest we need is depth and competition. We need 5-7 picks. Trade them to hungry rebuilding teams like Chicago who have no mid to lower picks to fill their rosters. Move up and get the blue and red chip players and let's get to winning the division and garnering the #1 seed and going to the Super Bowl. #LetsGoBuffalo
I think what you are missing is that you say the guys we have don't solve the deep threat issue, but don't overlook that none of them are incapable of going deep at any moment. I think that versatility makes the group dangerous on any given play at any given moment. Defenses won't know who is going short or who is going deep just based on personnel alone.
It's a copout to say the talent drops off. Every draft has players it's where scouting comes into play that matters. Most of the Bills day threes have been pointless in the last few years.
Dan nailed the need - a wr who can go deep and scare defenses out of their short range defense because the rest of the bills receivers are all short range receivers. They have a qb with the strongest arm in the league and it is being absolutely wasted. If allen had 2 burners like miami he would set records.
100% the reason receivers don’t come in and not have training wheels put on them is because the Bills offense is very complex. So many offensive players (most recently Josh and Kyle Allen) talked about how complex the scheme is to learn. That is a reason but also they don’t want them to come in and learn one receiver spot on the field. They want them to know how to play every spot and that slows them down immensely when they’re learning the offense as a whole AND every single spot.
Diggs had 21 yards on Eight targets in the loss to the Chiefs. And the Bills had less than 190 passing yards in both 23 Playoff Games. Less than 190. You ain’t winning with that.
I agree 100% that getting a top five WR stud in this draft is essential. Even if Dalton Kinkaid is a star, having a great #2 WR (with potential to be number 1) frees up both Kincaid and Diggs. Most teams have a corner who can shut down Davis 1:1. Because of that, opportunities are limited for Diggs and Kincaid because of double coverage strategies. Dude in the middle is spot on!!!!! 🏈
I’m fully prepared for the nightmare scenario….2-3 teams not expected to draft WR are gonna draft WR. I think MOST of the top 6-8 WRS will be GONE by 28….and if they don’t get a guy at 28 they’re F*****
"What do we need? What do we need?" This question was proposed multiple times during this podcast. I have been living and dying with the Bills my entire life. I'm 34 now, and regardless of my age, none of us have seen a SB win. I don't think it's our offense or our defense at this point. I think it boils down to COACHING! Let's stop fixing what isn't broken, and try our hands at a new HC, and NOT a new GM. Beane>McDermott. Let's Go Buffalo.
They have the worst WR group in the league, if this is not thier top priority, then the people running things need to be shipped out next. The Bills have the best QB in the league, they need to give him some good receivers. They needed a #2 last year and it bit them in the ass, now they need a 1 and 2. This isn't rocket science, get Allen some receivers. The first pick must be the best WR they can get, and if a good one is available at their next pick, grab that one too. There is no defensive player they could have added that would have beat the chiefs in that playoff game, but a receiver who can catch a dime bomb from Allen would have. Offense wins championships, that's been true for decades now. People will say, but the chiefs have a great defense! Sure, but they aren't superbowl champs because of their defense, theyre champs because they have mahomes and kelse and reid, offensive hall of famers - even in down years they are the xfactor that wins them games and rings.
The Chiefs won the Super Bowl based on skimping on WR and allocating that money to other areas of your team. They were able to do that BECAUSE they have a QB that is great enough to elevate whoever they give him.
Great show! For me it's AD Mitchell or bust. But if I absolutely had to settle I wouldn't mind a new cornerstone for years to come on either O or D line
Pick best available player. No matter the position. Specially wr. Don’t matter if after wr is a ol or cb. Is not like we opwont need in a very position but qb every year.
Why hasn't there been any interviews wirth Josh to get his take on things ?? the drama with diggs and now it's been "show time", again with all the hoopla of him leaving,,what does Josh have to say ??......still wonder why someone wasn;t here to replace him, before the head office did what they did ???pretty lame if you ask me,,,just my opinion,,,,and why to the texan's with a loaded team already,,,unreal
Really guys. Puka is an anomaly. Everything just fell into place for him. The opportunity was there. The offense wasn't in a great position and they just rolled with it forcing him the ball. Khalil is a more talented player and could have had those same numbers if we needed or wanted him to
Still going on about players that have left - move on! Stop living in the past! Team required change as it was not getting it done! Can't listen to this crap . . .
The trajectory and direction is much less passing yards, much shorter YPC, and the other team is in the game until the final minutes of the 4th quarter. Ignore the Stats and trajectory at your own peril.
Dan's Right! WR Round 1 to stretch the D is what they need to fix the O. Joe can't be afraid to do it bc of Gabe Davis. They need someone better than round 5 Davis, which means get them round 1.
I'm on team get it done don't need a wr 1st god we can get a diva in the second 1st thing should be a trade out of 1st it's like a 2nd we have no third if no one's there don't waste pick trade it
We don’t need a wide receiver. We need to learn how to use the weapons we have. Aka run the ball more, and build off of it. That Dallas game was a thing of beauty. We could run the defense into single high coverage and then hit them deep. Also, Josh needs to learn how to take the check down faster. There is so much lost potential not hitting the RB check right away. They will almost always turn into big yardage plays!
You're moving away from the strength of Josh Allen not towards it. He has a cannon. We need a field stretching threat who can actually CATCH those deep balls vs KC and a rotational edge pass rusher who can get Mahomes on his ass, which our guys could not. That's it. The rest is depth only. This team is ready to compete. Trade up not down. Get the blue chip talent. Win the Super Bowl.
Mean 17 is screaming to get him a first round weapon! Get him what he needs. We need to have the number 1 offense to get a Superbowl and he's telling us what he needs for that to happen.
Imagine josh allen for 1 year plays the entire season like every game is a playoff game. He would break every record there is. This dude only has to give it 75% and he still wins. Then playoffs he turns it all the way up. How many QBs can say that. All the rest are giving it everything they got every game and they look like crap. Josh dont have to until he needs to. He could 100% be the nfl m.v.p if he wanted to be. The NFL dont wana see the unleashed josh allen!
I agree with Matt B. Whoever is the rookie WR, he is not getting anything close to 1000 yards. Maybe he doesn't break 500 yards. We don't know. But there is only one football, and Diggs, Dalton Kincaid, Shakir, and Curtis Samuel will all get targets.
I wouldn't be a slave to that line of thinking. In the playoffs we didn't have one receiver who could stretch the defense and catch the damn dimes that Josh was throwing. Time to get a real threat. Diggs is not a #1 WR. His last 3 playoff losses poor stats and 0 tds. His last 10 or 12 games of this year are Diggs biggest td drought in his career. If the Bills don't trade up to get a top end boundary wide out they are nuts. Without that element to the offense, Josh's biggest strength, his cannon arm, is somewhat neutralized. I wish people would get that. That is what we've missed since briefly John "Smoke" Brown was here and we can get better than him in rd one. Height, weight, speed and production with good hands who can track the deep ball and be a red zone threat. Bills need that and a disruptive pass rusher rotational piece. Other than that this team only needs some depth. Literally trade away most of those late picks and we are golden. Depends on how the board falls but Beane should be ready to swing for the fences. A solid double won't cut it cuz we need a couple difference makers so I hope Beane hits a grand slam. Sorry, baseball has started. 😂
Disagree. Having a field stretching threat would open up the offense like 2020. Someone who can beat KC's and Cincy's D and actually catch the deep ball, back off those safeties and we run the ball down their throats and hit the open middle of the field. Then we need another rotational edge pass rusher who can get Mahomes and Burrow on their asses.
@@BillsMafiaExperience Mahomes is most thrown off his game with a really good push up the middle. Don't know if we can get that in the draft, but collapsing the pocket is the best way to beat Mahomes.
