It's the only way to remove the drum and maintain the upper portion. Also pulling the drum is best way to change the belt. Heres how to get it off. The nut itself has a plastic housing which has a chance of cracking or breaking. 1st I would try wearing a leather glove so you can get a very good grip and try to turn. If that doesnt work you may have to try a trap wrench. I would try to avoid vice grips or channel locks to limit the chance of damaging top of nut.
