Thank you in general Clay. I have really gotten into strengthening my game through youtube in the last two years and it has helped me a lot. Though by far your videos and advice have helped me most. I have had issues with shanking the ball recently and I have watched nearly every avaialble video to that. Only one that has really helped me was yours. It happened so many times now with other issues as well, that I have watched a video of yours and you were showing what students do wrong and I thought: „Wow, that´s me and I did that wrong all those years and had no clue“. That´s because I feel like you really make me understand my own swing. I think that´s been a huge problem for me in the past that I had absolutely no clue about my golf swing and why I was doing certain things. I think especialy for amateurs that´s a big problem because we do not now how our swing alters if we adjust something. The more videos I see of you and practise your advice out on the range the more I understand if I do that and that, that will cause that and that. That has helped me tremendously rather than some simplistic exercises of some coaches in the past. I feel so much more in control of my game. I still struggle with a lot of things but it´s becoming easier for me to make quick changes in my swing because of my greater understanding through your videos. It also gave me some total different views on things like for example the neurological part of putting. As a German I also really enjoy your southern accent. Gives me some kind of relaxation. Really love what you are doing!
Hi Max, thanks for sharing. Glad to hear the instruction has helped. Sounds like you're on the right track. Keep up the hard work! Quentin | TST Instructor
I've watched so many of your videos and I'm always amazed at your ability to mimic a bad swing so well. Then you go back to the right way to swing like flipping a switch. Very neat!
Dude you are the man!! Very much enjoy all your videos! Watched many other instructors online and you are by far the best! Please keep them coming. Still can't get out to 300 like yourself but getting there from all your tips! Big big fan
Well done again Clay!...I’ve been experimenting with early and late wrist set but will definitely stick with/ work on the longer take away after seeing this....Thanks!
Eh... ur right....and I do this with driver (wide and late wrist set)...but I just have better dispersion with my irons when I set the wrists early...I'm sure I'm losing distance but with my irons it's not as big a deal as long as I know how far each iron goes...but you're definitely right...I would like more iron distance, would be nice to hit 7 instead of a 5...I'll work on this
Clay, you have done a video where you compare clubhead speed using the wrists only versus clubhead speed using the body in the wrists. I would love to watch that video again. Which of your excellent instructional videos is it? Thank you for your time
Hi, thanks for watching. We have done so many videos that you could probably be talking about 10 videos we've done. I would recommend using the search feature to try to find the video you want. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Great video ! Thanks Clay . I use the impact ball which helps me stay connected and get proper forearm rotation and wrist movement. BTW - been watching Top Speed Tennis which has turned my forehand into a great asset
I got thrown out of the bar for my stool spinning exercises. ☹️ On a serious note, with driver as opposed to irons can you explain how you are supposed to"throw" the release earlier with the hinge compared to the irons? Thanks!
Normally agree with your teachings Clay however this time I have to disagree. I was reading Joe Dante's book where he taught the early wrist set, and after about 2hrs practice I went out next day and played my persona best score. Also I was hitting all my club's at least one club further which was huge for me, eg. 7i 150yds became 160-165 carry, and what was best was it felt truly effortless. The late wrist cock has been recognised as being potentially capable of greater distance, and many big hitters use it, but these guys are Pro's and very talented. It's also recognised as being difficult to do, especially as it's the time you're moving into transition. So for many amateurs don't you feel the early wrist set might be better?
You can definitely play great golf with an early wrist set but it usually leads to poor downswings in my experience. Thanks for sharing! Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Clay, it's difficult to tell...but are you more or less snapping your wrist at the ball at the bottom to generate speed or is it simply the ball in the way of the swing? I guess are you hitting the ball or simply swinging through the ball? hope that makes sense.
Hi, everyone's feeling is a little different. I will tell you that Clay is likely hitting the ball and getting that snap but this isn't a good feeling for a lot of ams because they do it too early and cast the club. If you're releasing the club early then probably not a good feeling but you can test it out and see on camera. Play well! Quentin | TST Instructor
@@TopSpeedGolf thanks, I will definitely Try it, I can get the feel with short Irons like 7 or 8 but for some reason I have to believe I've always been all arms with the Driver..maybe because it's longer...? thanks
He lacks the crazy flexibility that Wilco and DJ have which limits his options. Silver lining is his swing is much easier for the 90 percenters to copy.
@@TopSpeedGolf Hey Clay, thanks for the response. I went to the driving range today and tried this late wrist set. It was a game changer!! I use to be a VERY early wrist setter and changing my swing to how you talked about in the video not only gave me more speed with less effort it gave my swing rhythm that I couldn't find with an early wrist set. Thank you so much!!!
nice video (as always)... I'm 6'0", 260 lbs... my driver swing speed is about 91mph (I bought a SC200 via your link). If I could get over 100mph, I feel my game would really transform. what video should I watch to learn how to address the ball with a proper wrist position (especially the right)? I see your right wrist, and the drawings of Ben Hogan, and the right wrist looks like it has no bend. Mine looks like it is already bending towards me at address. Are the wrist positions constant for all of the clubs? When I try to keep my wrist straighter, I definitely stand taller.
Hi, the number one thing you can do to increase your club head speed is to increase your range of motion in the backswing. You can do this by working through our Power Turn section of the Top Speed Golf System. Play well! Quenitn | TSG Instructor
We'd like to but we haven't had a chance to yet. I believe it's the same tech but they added spine and launch as well. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
But Rory McIlroy set wrists early and still he is able to maintain distance , I think it creates problems when we are not rotating properly , if any one rotates properly with early wrists , he can also hit the ball far.
Hi, thanks for the comment but Rory actually has a very wide takeaway. Even so, you can set the wrists early and still get distance. You just have to make sure you get a full shoulder turn. Typically, setting the wrists early shortens the shoulder turn. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I don't think everyone with a quicker wrist set leans to the left as you did with your example in the backswing. I'm not advocating an early wrist set but it looked like you overdid it a bit in your example.
You're exactly right. Not everyone does that and you can get lag with an early wrist set but it's much more difficult because you'll tend to want to fire as soon as the club is set. Play well!
I'm going to have to call bullshit on the early stretching of the forearm because both early setting and late setting gets you to the top in the same position. You chose to cast your wrist early to make a point but we viewers that know what we're looking at... also know that you could have easily completed your down swing as you normally would. I'm disappointing that you would use this approach in teaching just to validate your preference in the golf swing takeaway and wrist hinge.
Hi Guy, thanks for the comment. You can set your wrists early and get a full shoulder turn and generate lag. That's just not what usually happens. I see this all the time where people set the wrists early, don't complete the turn and cast the club. If you use a later wrist set then it gets the shoulders moving more earlier in the swing. This makes it much easier to get a full shoulder turn. Setting the wrists later also allows the club head to have more momentum at the top of the swing making it easier to generate lag. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
When you set the wrists early you should not try to hold on to any angle coming down. Also you don't need much are arm height when using this style. I can hit a 4-iron 210 yards with only about 2 foot of arm swing but full wrist cock. I almost never miss a fairway and my driver does just about what yours did with your demonstration using an early wrist set. Who doesn't want 300 down the middle? Carry distance is highly overrated. I would take 100 yards carry distance with 200 yards of roll down the middle all day long as long as I'm not trying to carry a hazard. I can hit it 30 yards further with the late wrist set but much much more wild. Also the early wrist is much more body friendly.
Looks biased. You swung the club differently second swing. Plus you had body leaning fwd first and second loaded the back leg second swing. I’ll take the straight away shot all day!!!!! Dustin Johnson sets early. End of story
Hi, you can set early but it's typically better to set a little later. Do what works best for you. Thanks for watching. Play well! Quentin | TST Instructor
But you're not demonstrating early wrist set with an 9 iron !... like the other's on RU-vid who discover it, then swear by it, then promote it, then disappear forever into ' i used to be a golf pro...for 15 mins on youtube ! ' obscurity.
