Embarking on a scientific literature review can be a daunting task, especially when dealing with vast databases like PubMed. This video tutorial simplifies the process, showcasing how the integration of large language models, such as ChatGPT, and advanced computational techniques can significantly expedite the review of scientific articles on any given subject. Unlike direct inquiries to AI, which may yield scientifically inaccurate responses due to the AI's training on predominantly non-scientific data, we leverage the AI's reasoning capabilities to extract and synthesize accurate information from reliable sources like PubMed.
We start by explaining why directly querying large language models might not always yield scientifically accurate answers and emphasize the importance of extracting data from trustworthy databases. Then, we outline the manual process of conducting a literature review, including searching, sorting, and summarizing articles from PubMed, and categorizing them into sub-subjects for a comprehensive review.
The tutorial then shifts focus to how these tasks can be automated and enhanced using technology. We demonstrate accessing PubMed through its API, employing unsupervised machine learning techniques like KMeans clustering with the scikit-learn Python package to categorize articles, and utilizing the reasoning power of large language models to summarize articles within each sub-category. Finally, we show how to merge these summaries into a cohesive review text, making the entire process more efficient and manageable.
This video is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, and anyone involved in scientific inquiry, providing a clear, step-by-step guide to using modern AI and machine learning tools to streamline the literature review process. Whether you're new to scientific research or looking to enhance your review techniques, this tutorial offers practical advice and insights into the power of combining AI with scientific databases.
