Its important that the students who look to be in Kindergarten, focus on writing and not spelling. If they become obsessed with spelling correctly they will never complete the task, which is to write. The spelling will come in later or a different lesson. Writing workshop focuses on the writing only. Its helps students build the skill and its helps with reading.

They need to learn the link between reading and writing. Children need to start writing early to develop writing fluency and not to be afraid of writing or think that is difficult task. Sleeping is spelled with short e and needs to be corrected,

Spelling the words as the students spelled them is a teaching strategy. Maybe she is modeling that when they do a rough draft, they don't worry about their spelling. When they revise, maybe they go back and spell check. This might be a expectation in her classroom for workshop.

This way of spelling words is called inventive spellings. Inventive spellings are spelled the way the word sounds. During K-2 level, teachers don't make them memorize words with conventional spellings, as this stops the child from writing as they get stuck in 'if the word is spelled write or wrong', that's where their thought process stops. If you know about the sight words they are not spelled incorrectly while they are writing, they are given the charts or listing of those words to copy from. They all learn the correct spellings in higher grade, and that's for sure. 'Night' is a big word for them, how do you expect them to write the 'g 'sound which comes in the middle and explain that to them. These are all the strategies taught slowly and gradually with giving meaning to them.

As a teacher it is best to model the correct spelling. If the kids spell on their own, yes they spell phonectically so they understand what they are reading but I don't think the teacher should model this.

Thanks for a class! There is one question. After the first writer's workshop, are you gonna prompt kids to correct spellings ? Is there any special reason why a teacher didn't help them recognize the sound letter relationship for correct spelling?

They are gaining a lot more than spelling. They could correct their spelling later in their reading. This is for writing and fluency is more important than accuracy. Genius.

I think as teachers we all have our own styles, philosophies and beliefs. The most important thing to remember is are we being flexible and adaptive to each individual child's own learning style and developmental needs, strengths and interests? Personally I wouldn't spell the words incorrectly, however I wouldn't push the children to write the words correctly on their own. We can still model correct spelling without being judgmental and making them feel "less smart". As long as we go with the child's lead, they will learn the correct spelling on their own. Plus we have one of the best tools of all, peer modeling. If they don't learn from you, their peers will also be there to support and facilitate their learning as well.

She is teaching exactly what research shows is the best strategy for teaching writing at this age. She is teaching the kids to listen to the sounds they hear and write the letter that matches the sound. Phonics. If you are criticizing her for not spelling correctly, you know absolutely nothing about child development, or the research behind teaching young students.

I have to disagree with you because that is NOT what research says. According to researchers, teachers are supposed to model the correct way (whether is writing or reading). Yes, students are expected to misspelled words at this age because they write phonetically (but thats during their independence practice). I have been teaching K for 7 years and I never correct my students because I want them to feel confident. I collect writing samples weekly and I model the skills they need to work on.

I teach my students this way because they are at such a beginner level for writing steps. Why bog them down with too many rules? Writing phonetically allows them to relax and let the thoughts flow without slowing down the thinking process. Work on grammar corrections=lost of train of thought. I call it attention span of a fly (jokingly). I see at this age they need to handle a few rules for writing at a time to master the process of getting thoughts onto paper.
@KristinLemsMusic
@KristinLemsMusic 8 лет назад
but why write words if the word is misspelled? If their attention span is too short to appreciate the spelling of the words, then why write the words? Just because they may be writing phonetically doesn't mean the teacher should be writing phonetically....I think.....I'm really confused.

/nit/ would sound different than night. It is in the same word family as pit, kit, sit, fit, etc. Why would you model night as nit? ...if you were doing this I would see if you wrote it as nite because "the e tells the i to say its name". So how are you teaching them "sounding out" is not even correct. However, I did love the mentor text for teaching speech bubbles.

When dealing with kindergarten it is important for them to understand the mechanics of writing. I have 5 year olds that don't know where to begin, how to form a word. The point is to give them confidence in order to help them take risks in writing. I can not, for the life of me, see myself modeling writing to a child that is barely grasping what writing is all about with a million spelling rules when they barely can identify which sounds to include in any given word. I wouldn't leave this type of writing in a word wall, mind you, but if the objective is to model writing as such, I feel it is the best way to build writer confidence in little ones.

When you are teaching to younger students who have not learned all the phonics rules, you teach them to write what they hear. These students look like 1st graders and they would not know double vowels sounds and such just yet. As they learn more sounds, then you expect them to use it. Until then they write what they hear.

So many hav alredy talkd about this, but the introduction to riting allows for misspelling of words because lik so many hav sed, its appropriate to spell it as it sounds because the spelling of such words is a latur skill. Yes, misspelling of words like I just used in the previous sentences are quite annoying when we see them, but bogging kindergarten age students with so much information at once is just too much. The emphasis of this lesson is the process of writing, not correct spelling and grammar. This will come later on.
@risti10

Specific professional journal articles?...no, sorry, nothing handy at the moment. However, if you look into it, you will find that almost all information related to teaching students at the pre-emergent and emergent stages of literacy development highlights the importance of teaching phonics and phonemic awareness. Studies also show that giving students ample opportunities to write using invented spelling enhances youngsters' awareness of that letter/sound relationship, which, in turn is beneficial to their reading development. Modeling that writing process is vital to the success of the young reader/writer.
