The WGA writers strike has shut down Hollywood for over 4 months now, while some people like Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher have decided to bring back their TV show, despite the strike. The WGA were not pleased about this, picketing both Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher. Since the pressure built however both Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher have decided to delay re-opening their shows until after negotiations between the WGA, SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood studios. Despite not breaking any of the Hollywood Strike rules.

The WGA writers and SAG-AFTRA strike have been moving in surges of news for months. But this last couple of weeks was spiced up by Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher deciding to restart their shows they didn't even need to stop, and got CRUSHED. Despite being careful to stay within all of the strike rules, no-one can be allowed to stand against the strike and make it seem anything other than omnipotent, and so the machine moved to destroy the shows. Having backed down, Drew and Bill have now been left alone, with just some background voices still complaining. But I find it very interesting to watch in real time, 2 shows that didn't even use writers, having to bow down to the writers union, despite that same union, being the cause of all of Hollywoods woes in the first place. At this point, Hollwyoods created a monster they can't control, but I'm sure they'll be looking to in the future. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

This entire thing was just about as fortuitous for audiences/consumers as it possibly could be. Hollywood actors, writers, and directors have been so far up their own asses for so long now that they have been producing nothing but petulant sludge for over a decade. They all continuously act like their audiences are beneath them. They've used every awards show and even their individual platforms for years to try and tell us plebs how to live our lives while simultaneously calling us dusgustinh names and openly disrespecting the fact that WE are the ones who make them rich and famous. Atleast back in the day they were making amazing movies and TV shows while they were looking down on all of us but now they are nothing but a bunch of creatively bankrupt, entitled narcissists who firmly believe they are far more important then they truly are. Well, now they know we give ZERO fucks about them as individuals and all the terrible products they've been producing for far too long now. There's nothing quite like a bunch of narcissistic assholes finally figuring out that no one really gives a shit if they come or go. It's really a beautiful thing.

The collect money, to put back into the union for a eventual strike and for other things such as if a member gets hurt or to Pay for Other benefits provided by the union. Funny thing about the current Hollywood writers & ChatGPT: If the WGA truly thought they'd be better than ChatGPT, they'd simply have a writing contest, to show off how superior their writers' writing skills are in comparison to AI. There can be only 2 reasons why they haven't done this so far: 1. They don't actually think they'll win 2. They couldn't come up with the idea 🤣

The way the human brain works and the way ChatGPT works are two very different things. Chat GPTis inherently derivative. It provides the most likely output to an input, based on the data set it was trained on. It can’t “create,” it can only provide answers based on probable outcomes. And even then, it’s subject to error. A human being can look at a body of work, synthesize what makes it interesting or what they personal like about it, and then create something new that’s uniquely theirs. It’s not the same thing. Chat GPT could probably write a decent middle of the road romcom or action movie. It could not write something like Breaking Bad. The problem with a lot of Hollywood writers is that they lack talent and they hate the audience.
@SuperNovaRider
@SuperNovaRider 9 месяцев назад
@@2012sonora Your description of a language model AI like ChatGPT is very superficial, mind you. (I'm a professional software dev for over 15 years now, I do that stuff for a living :D) This "trend" of describing ChatGPT to simply provide information based on "probability" is another way of blackbox thinking. Stating that information is derived from probability actually tells you nothing regarding the source of the information. It's like stating "probability tells me to use iron for bridge construction instead of bamboo". So the question remains or becomes: Probability of what? Probability that it burns? That it bends? That it grows? Of course the only probability that you care for would be "probability that it breaks under the load/weight". It's the same with how language models truly work. In short: No non-computer scientist has any way of understanding how ChatGPT works, but people like to think they do, so they come up with allegories. But sadly in the case of AIs this allegories are so superficial, since they are trying to explain something very technical, even in a technical context, without using any technical terms or constructs. Let me put it this way: Try explaining how a car is actually starting when you turn the ignition key, without using any technical terms or references. And in the end what you'd end up with would be something along the lines of "you turn the ignition key and that makes your car run". It's so superficial, that you could argue that you have just rephrased the question: Which is exactly what you see in all non-technical explanations of ChatGPT about "predictions" or "probability". So yes, ChatGPT works different from the human brain in some regards. But it is extremely close to how the human brain works (actually the consciousness or train of thought) in other regards. And what ChatGPT could write is not at all limited to repeating an already existing story or work. That's simply not how ChatGPT works. To drive my point home: Since the dawn of time or rather the "invention of art" people are asking the questions "where does creativity come from?" or "what is creativity"? Some argue it is simply the repetition or copying of things already seen. But of course, that can't be all, since this would mean nothing we see today (technologies, and such) could have been created, because at some point there was nothing you could copy it from. In fact, what most accurately describes creativity, is the transformation of pre-existing patterns. Like drawing a picture of a fictional alien planet. It is based on your concepts and ideas rooted in science. So you could argue that to some degree you are simply using "science" as your source and are therefore "repeating" something that already exists. While you could also argue, that this exact picture never existed anywhere in the world. And this is why you see actual developers of ChatGPT at OpenAI publicizing statements that "they didn't think ChatGPT could answer X", but it did. Or even "we don't know why it can do Y, we never actually taught it" and stuff like that. It can give you a (seemingly) creative output based on pre-existing information, it has been trained with. It can connect information sources and derive new information based on its input that hasn't been exactly specified or expressed anywhere before in this exact manner. Which, again, is what a lot of scientists think creativity is at its core. ChatGPT is no simple google search engine, nor is it a database interface. (Also note that ChatGPT did pass the touring test at the beginning of this year.) And therefore I argue, that with the state of modern Hollywood writers, you could very likely make ChatGPT write a story, which is indistinguishable from the nowadays very poor quality nonsense Hollywood writers are boring us with in recent years.

Other than the fact that they'd have to lose the narcissism, & actually have some sense of introspection & self-reflection...? The only other things that persuades people like that- are reputation, & money: Wilde said it best, 'The only thing worse than being talked about- is not being talked about' - when you turn into some form of social pariah- you at least have the potential to be talked about, & can be kept in others' consciousness in _some_ fashion- & thus, slowly pave a way back for yourself, if so inclined- by virtue of the fact that you're remembered. The worst thing a person in Hollywood can be, is a has-been - not worth even the consideration of gossip... While all of the reporting on this can be super-entertaining, & the fact that ratings & returns on the activist-driven 'master-pieces' have gone ever-lower, _should_ *force* the studios to really think about what kind of environment they've supported & let thrive, instead of seemingly doubling-down on the same garbage ideas that audiences have repeatedly showed they *_don't_* want, & then punish those same paying audience members for the feedback - by insulting them, & acting like their money isn't needed... What would these people do, if they stopped getting the attention- that they so desperately want? I don't live in California, or America- I more or less stopped watching mainstream TV back in 2018 - if it wasn't for entertainment channels on RU-vid, & the occasional article I come across on my search engine homepage- I wouldn't know about the strike. And other than sympathising with the crew & service personnel who are made to suffer for this ongoing situation, I have no reason to care how long the strike goes on...

The big irony is that the success of the live-action One Piece on Netflix is proof of how bloated with untalented or egotistical people the writing rooms for various popular franchises have become. There have been complaints that the show sticks too close to the manga and anime, but these are from executives and writers who have no clue what made the series popular in the first place, as evidence by them wanting to add "romance" between the Strawhat crew to the story and Eichiro Oda all but stepping on their collective necks with a massive "Not On My Watch!" - thank god he retained full creative control. The WGA is terrified of shows like One Piece because it, and others that will definitely now follow suit by sticking to the source material and catering TO the fans, are the antithesis of many of the writers who are getting paid for a job they're simply not cut out to do. Hollywood, and Western media in general, needs to have a massive cull of the bloated, untalented, politically or agenda-focused people who have infected a variety of creative industries, the writer's rooms of many productions being just a symptom of a much bigger problem.

I've seen the tyranny, but to be honest, its not needed that often. The hivemind nature of unions is scarier. My wife's former union threatened to strike over an agreement difference so small that it would have taken 2 years to make up for just one week's worth lost wages. But to make things worse, they ended up taking a last-minute agreement to avoid a strike that was worse than the original offer. It shifted 1/3 of the annual pay increases into a one-time bonus, which didn't compound, and so by the end of the contract we were making notably less. But it let the union claim victory because they hit their target percentages and "saved our wages" as long as no one checked the math. Sadly, few did.

@@FreedomStrike76I’m not so sure they are. Maybe there was a time during mass industrialization where workers banding together to demand they be treated with basic respect was a good thing, because industrialization was unprecedented and there were, therefore, no laws already in place to protect such workers, but such laws have long ago been put in place and are still enforced. You still must pay your workers the agreed upon salary, and working conditions must be appropriate and as safe as possible. Beyond that, unions no longer do anything good. All they do is demand more money from everyone, worker and employer alike. They nag the government on as many levels as they’re allowed to get away with, demanding yet more actions from the already heavy hand of bureaucracy to further punish business, which indirectly harms the workers employed in such businesses, and then the rest of the economy. Let people negotiate for themselves, don’t systematically dumb them down by instating a helicopter-parent organization over them to unfairly demand things for them that no one is entitled to by default. I do agree, however, that requiring union membership is probably the the function that grants unions the most destructive power in the first place.

I’m not a fan of Drew Barrymore, I know she comes from a family of actors etc. So I was glad that she had enough balls to say it wasn’t about her, but her crew. Then the narcissistic Hollywood Acolytes condemned her for it. That should tell you something about them. They didn’t care. _At all._ They don’t care that the person who brought them their over priced oat late is close to living out of their car. They don’t care that they’re suffering, emotionally, mentally, and financially. “We’re Union Proud!” Shut up Walter, go back to making Meth. Crews could lose their homes, while these over paid (I’d use the word cosplay, but that would be an insult to cosplayers.) jackasses, have no worries about loosing their 10 bedroom, 15 bath monstrosity of a mansion(s). I do hope that other film industries leave Hollywood in the dust. What would be justice and karma would be for the Crews to strike! They deserve jobs, they deserve to work, and they deserve to find fulfilling employment elsewhere, *not* in Hollywood. Hollywood was- and has always been morally bankrupt. They deserve to metaphorically burn. They don’t deserve praise, our adoration, our time, or our money. They deserve to fade away to obscurity. If anyone, who calls them scabs, for doing the right thing for their crews ask them this: So, you want them to loose their jobs? To live out of their vehicles? To become depressed? Scared? If they answer in the negative, drop them as a friend. If they say “They need to support the writers!” Then dump them as a friend. It will show you that they too could care less if the crews loose their jobs etc. I have never thought it was a good idea to have celebrities as role models. They’re not. Instead of using (activist/talentless) union writers for roughly $1,600 per day, studios should just call up a bunch of published authors who are used to writing complex plots & likeable characters

Tbf, a lot of the Hollywood writers are not involved in plot, but in dialogue and jokes. All the little things that make a scene or a show. That’s also why many of them need to be on set in LA and a writer’s strike can work. If it was just for plot, studios would simply ask fans to send ideas.
@OcarinaSapphr-

@@davidgantenbein9362 Maybe they _should_ - when the last decade or so of productions has increasingly looked like bad fanfiction, maybe they should look for people that *do* care about IP's, even if not 'professionals' - they sure as hell couldn't be any worse- & larger writer's rooms might make more sense, to get people to bounce ideas off of, rather than what the 'Hollywood writers' rooms' have proven to be...

@@OcarinaSapphr- Yeah, they definitely need better plot writers and better showrunners, but it doesn’t change the fact that a lot of these writers are only there for the small and daily work, which can’t be shoveled over that easily (otherwise studios would have moved that work to some sweat shop in Asia long ago).

I got only one question: how the heck all those writers can even afford to live for 5 months without any income? I'm a freaking IT expert with 15+ years career and I'm not sure I'l be able to afford more than 3 months to sustain myself... Yeah, that has to do with my country of origin, but I didn't choose it. Actually, I have more questions! Do they realize, that companies making billions are exploiting child labor in most poor countries? Say Apple? Why the heck don't they use their "unity" to make the world a bit more fair place, but only trying to get their teeth into that big smelly chunk of cheese the hollywood studios has (or should I say "had"?)? Do those writers consider it fair? I'm freaking speechless. If they would've wanted to do something good, they'd started some donation campaign to help out Ukrainians, for example, or in fact any other group of people who's suffering from almost cartoonish villains around the world. Ah? What do you say? They wouldn't benefit personally from that? Now I got it...

A great deal of American unions are just that, gluttonous monopolies desperate to maintain power through any means necessary. They have chokeholds on the government, therefore the businesses, therefore the consumers. It’s truly a terrible system.
@beanclam

They're required to use a percentage of members of SAG AFTRA, depends on the contract. Also, production companies make tons of money what kind of mafia are you comparing the union members to? A normal SAGAFTRA member makes around $22-$30/hour. A non union actor gets around $16... i think In n Out pays more hourly. SAG AFTRA is asking for an 11% increase which is like, another $3 an hour. The CEO of Paramount makes like $87,000 daily or something like that. THAT'S the Mafia.

@@beanclam Basic racketeering is when a group (like a mafia family) demands certain things (usually money) from people who may or may not need them in exchange for withholding a severe/arbitrary punishment for not paying. For example, if I went up to you in your home and said, “You need to pay me $$$ so that I can protect you from your house burning down... by accident,” that would be racketeering, as I’m forcing (threatening) you into an unsolicited business/financial agreement. Unions work the same way by forcing productions to hire their writers or actors. A production team may not want to use any of the WAG writers or SAG-AFTRA actors, but their production’s green light is contingent upon hiring enough of those people. Point is, personnel hiring is supposed to be the prerogative of the production team, not unions.

If the writing guild doesn't get back to work soon, well by my humbled calculations, the Christmas lead up period which starts in about 6 weeks will be immensely worse for them. In fact there is so much content from previous years, we could ignore their strike all the way to new years!
