4-TRACK TIPS AND GEAR LIST: 424recording.com/4-track-reco...
In this video, I'm writing a song in an hour on a Tascam 424 mkiii 4-track. Writing a song in an hour is tough, especially on a Tascam 424 mkiii 4-track, but it can be done. When writing a song in an hour on a Tascam 424 mkiii 4-track, ya gotta keep moving! I messed up pretty bad on this one!

Hey Mike,... I stopped you video at 15 seconds in because This is how I spent the last 6yrs with my 424 and think I already know what's coming!!! (could be wrong)… BUT!! writing on the fly driven by pure inspiration is soo much more incredibly & mystical... for example: Beatles White album release of 2018 with previous demo versions I jst listened to tonight & realized that they did this soo fast that they barely were conscious of what they were doing... it jst flowed from them like they were barely awake.... Disc 3 blew my mind to hear them go at it like it came out of nowhere.
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
676bun have you ever watched the anthology? They go deep into White Album. There’s something to be said about flow state, moving quickly and not thinking too much about it. I’m starting to look at some of the songs as sketches. I can always go back to stuff if I really want to but I think the goal is to just capture lightning in a bottle and keep moving!

No worries Mike, I've noticed tha there's not a lot of people doing what you do on RU-vid. I would like to do the same and make videos on recording techniques, but I don't have the proper equipment to make videos with. All I have is my phone, tablet of laptop. In saying that I do have a lot of knowledge about how excellent sound quality can be achieved with cassette Multitrack machines. I've had some really great results which make it difficult to guage whether or not it was done in a real studio. But I just love the old school portastudio vibe.
@424Recording
@424Recording 4 года назад
Paul, I encourage to start now with what you've got. I actually filmed the overhead shot in this video with my 4 year old hand me down iPhone. Phones are actually perfect for making RU-vid videos. The trickiest part may be editing but there's even apps for that as well. Also, the sound is 50% of the game with these videos, and if you have experience recording your voice, you're more than halfway there. Don't wait for the perfect circumstances to start! You can 100% start making videos right now with what you've got! If it's something you want to do, give it a shot!

I know this is late but man I completely know what your going through playing and singing while recording and forgetting lyrics and having to start over but it's cool your doing it on your own time!I recorded my 1st official solo number(drums,guitar,synths,vocals)on my zoom h4n before I went to work and it was brutal!But wow the end results were so cool I couldn't believe I did it on my own without a band lol.By the way love your vids man that riff somehow reminds me of early guided by voices when I was a young buck in the 90s. Good stuff!

Love your vids. Could you please make a video on the best way to send audio from your DAW to the 424? I recently bought one to send drums to from Ableton to give them a bit of tape warmth but i'm struggling to figure out the best way to go about as everytime i have tried i have a significant drop in gain/volume when i play the recording back on the Tascam.

☆"Excellent Question & Proposition! ☆ For a DAW Stereo Track, run a Stereo cable out from Headphone jack into Tascam Input, ☆ Next: (rather) Import into the SD Card via an SD Card reader or Tascam USB. (Especially for multiple tracks)

Hi Mike, great stuff. You made me laugh out loud when I saw the expression on your face when the train wreck bit happened at the end. That happened to me once, but now to safeguard against that happening again I just write out the basic tabs to form the structure of the track, and it always works. Even on the linnear analogue. Kind regards. Paul.

No worries Mike, normally do it like in blocks like intro then verse couple of bars then chorus verse then lead break verse chorus outro. But just to give you a guide. Tabs are great for that. It's really fun to watch your content.

Yep!!… at an hour in I hear something flowed out of you that was driven by the moment and could not be duplicated by another the same way. I mean when I hear somebody spent weeks recording a song,... I am baffled and can only wander why??? The best ones were written on the fly with little effort... I mean the ones that you think suck later turn out to be favorites

Hey Mike, This is great. You may have already done this but..... How about collecting a list of four track users and creating a chain mail EP production type thing. Each user could add a track and / or start a track on the tape then post it on. At the end each contributor could put in some cash, and we could get a tape made. Best, Ben

Depending on the range of your voice, there's certain keys that your voice will sound really good in. Easy way to make a song sound better and improve ease of singing. My voice tends to be on the lower side so capo 3, 4, and 5 sound great. Def try it, Mike. I used to think I was a bad singer because I couldn't sing certain songs but it turns out I just needed to change the key

I noticed you write with your left hand, but you play guitar righty. I know a couple player who are lefties, but play righty. Nice tune btw.I find song writing can get a bit mind numbing. That's why I prefer to just beat the shit out of some drums.

When I went to get my first bass, the salesman told my dad and I that I'd be better off learning righty, as there were more instruments available. Idk if he was trying to help or just sell us a particular bass but I always wonder what would have happened if I had learned lefty. Would it have changed the way I played? I guess I'll never know! Drums work, too, alan!
