Handwriting is better. I just feel like you can truly express yourself with your handwriting. I mean, you could express your personality though typing, but it is not as expressive as something handwritten. :D
oh god yeah. plus having to sketch trajectories and wave forms is impossible. well its not impossible but sketching it on paper is quicker to set up and far more convenient.
Do that too! I wrote my Master's thesis that way. Writing long hand can help you edit when you have to type. I still have notebooks loaded with paper and paragraph starters. I throw grammar, spelling , and neatness out the window. As long as I can get my ideas down with my favorite pen and notebook. I even rewrote my class notes so I didn't have to study much.
@@justluxky I think it all depends on the person lol. I’m a fast typer, but I can stare at a blank document for hours w/o typing anything if I don’t have at least the first few pages written out
Most ideal situation is having the professor upload the PowerPoints and to just annotate it in your own handwriting. That way, anything that the teacher feels is necessary is already written out for you, you can mostly just sit back and listen during lecture, and occasionally make notes that are relevant. Rather than scrambling to write during class.
I had a lecturer who made it his personal pleasure to make sure every student had to scramble to copy whatever he says. There's no time to process what he is teaching, we were just busy scribbling.
@@Silverelfz that is 80% of my school life. teachers here just love to make you suffer & make you work more at home bc all you did in class was writing nonstop. this completely ruined my handwriting
Reason #1 definitely applies to me. Then when exams come, I consolidate and rewrite my notes to have a little study sheet, but I end up not reading it again about 90% of the time because just rewriting and organizing my notes were enough for reviewing/studying.
I started journaling a couple years ago (not pretty journaling like people do in videos, just literally brain-dumping into a notebook) and it's helped my mental health so much. It helps me process what I'm feeling, and it gives me time to calm down when I'm stressed or upset, without reverting to unhealthier coping strategies.
While in Nursing school I found taking handwritten notes made me remember things so well. I still write letters, notes, journal by hand, with my fountain pen.
The feeling of writing a book by hand is amazing when you have the final product. A copy that nobody else have feels like holding a treasure in your hands. How would you feel if you every found a handwritten manuscript from an known/unknown author?
I have written a book all by hand. I love to write. I am always writing down notes from various sources. I just purchased some gel pens from Japan. And I use them all the time. I want to buy some pens from your company when I get some money next year.
Hey thanks for this! I keep on worrying that writing by pen first before typing up is just pointlessly doubling up the work - but your point makes me view that written draft differently! 👍🏽👍🏽
Can I just say that as someone who relies on forms in their job, I never expected legible handwriting to be so essential and relevant in 2022. But it is. IT. IS.
Writing out notes is definitely a sure way to remember things . I write note all the time lol because I am forgetful. I am practicing my cursive writing because I don’t want to lose that skill, since it was how I was taught in school back home in Ecuador. I was forced to print when I came to Canada in 1991. Handwriting in cursive looks a lot nicer imo 🙂
@ScriptorMalum It depends on the person, if you have a creative mind. Even gen Z can write stylish cursive when they want. Look at Stabilo web and at the lettering section. They explain the different style of it.
Writing by hand!! And for all of the reasons stated in this video ☺️ Journaling has been great for my mental health and practicing my handwriting with a fountain pen… Writing down notes also helps me remember the important points when I’m studying
I always prefer writing by hand. Even in school, my notes and rough drafts would be by hand and my good copies would be typed up. I just have an easier time putting stuff down by hand. I'm a very tactile person, so I like feeling the paper and the solidity of the pen. Even now, I have a health ledger for any health issues I have (chronic pain, weak immune system and several physical issues due to bad genes), and I far prefer writing it. I also sometimes like practicing calligraphy because it can be very meditative. It's basically the same as why I prefer physical art to digital art, though I kind of want to learn to do digital art.
For anyone who ever has to sit through a staff meeting (in-person, not online), taking notes by hand is the only way to go! I've been looking through years and years of notes that I've taken at committee, faculty, and staff meetings, and have found very little of consequence, but lots of good commentary - everything from asides I wrote about the body language of the other people there ("___ looks like she's on the verge of sleep, guess she's past caring anymore..."), to a doodle I did after we adopted our first cat, to some really good expletives expressing my disdain for the subject of conversation, and so on. I've even found 2 nonsensical, very funny stories that some co-workers and I wrote, each writing a few sentences then passing the paper to another, during a long and boring meeting. I've even inked up pens just for the purpose of trying the new colors out at what was expected to be a long meeting! And you really can't do any of that with a computer, esp. at the same time that you're looking up, nodding, and appearing to pay complete attention!
this is so refreshing after all the comments on 'duh just do it digital' of last time 😩 I'm getting interested in fountain pens, I now understand why everyone uses it for journaling since you run out of gel pen ink so quickly 😂
I took notes from this video 📝 it really does help me process things better: information and emotions. It also is a stress reliever for me. And I also have a visual picture in my mind when I’m trying to express to someone else what I learned or my emotions.
I'm a mathematician, and I just can't understand what people could be wiriting on their computers during class. Not only is it extremely time-cpnsuming to pick the right symbol, but it also minimising doodling - I wouldn't be able to pass a single class without arrows, asteriscs and all that jazz. I teach a remedial undergrad class of basic engineering for my doctorate's supervisor, and I just don't know what the kids with the computers are doing. How are you going to make a complicated structure image on screen? And they're not using tablets with styluses, they're actually typing. I genuinely want to see those notes and ask them how it works, because it's beyond my understanding.
I love writing my notes by hand. Its a more immersive experience for me, doing it I can practice diagrams too and its definitely a good exercise to do everyday. I hope it survives the digital era.
I absolutely cannot take digital notes! I love taking my time and making it all pretty and colour coded. Yes it takes longer but I love it and it works in the long run!
I had an in-person meeting with my leads the other day, and had to explain to one of the leads (i met her the first time in person that day) that i needed to write down the reminders on my notebook by pen, otherwise i don't remember jt as much. She couldn't understand why i couldn't just type it out and save it in a note with my laptop.
Discovered the Uniball One pen this year through JetPens. Now it's easily my favorite black ink pen, I bring it with me everywhere. Thank you for your videos.
I definitely agree! I find writing so much better than typing. For example, I had a math test coming up and decided to take down notes during a lesson in my notebook. I was able to write down all the key terms and definitions, make little drawings, and organize my thoughts clearly. I remembered all of the info and I got a very good grade on that test. On the other hand, I had a science test one week and I was kind of lazy and typed all my notes on a google document. I got a B+ on that test since I couldn't remember my notes all that well. I also agree that writing is more personal and therapeutic. I rarely type things unless its absolutely needed. :)
Writing notes for school was aways really hard for me because of hand cramps, and it was mostly a bad experience... but once I was able to use more my adapted pens at home (that are like 1,5cm thick) to take longer notes I finally understood the benefits. I wanna try this Pilot Dr. Grip one day, but I'm afraid that I would be holding the pen right at the metal barrel... Well, I have to test to find out :)
I love this so much!!!! I adore writing by hand and am not going to go fully digital anytime soon. The feel of pen on paper is indescribably precious ❤️
I find when I wrote down something, it is very easy to recall and it stays very long in my memory than just typing it. Sometimes I can't remember clearly what I'd just typed about couple hours ago 😓 But, when I write out something (of course by my hand) even after a month it's still very CLEAR in my mind 👍
Since my early student years,i strugle to have a "nice" calligraphy. I always dislike my style...but a co-worker said recently that i have a beautiful hand writing style 😁 That made my day!!🤗
When I took a class in grad school where I had no choice but to use a computer, I noticed that I really didn't pay much attention in class, so I didn't use a computer unless I had to for note taking.
I've been writing by hand my whole life.. I've been a writer but also just loved writing and journaling. Anyway, I have to get carpal tunnel surgery so I won't be able to write for almost 8 weeks total so so it's gonna be really sad but it's OK.. Once it's all done and the soreness goes away I'll be able to write even more than I did before
I like writing by hand much better, even though I as a lefty get crampy real easy. It really gives me the feel of getting in the flow (my hand writing is a mix of block letters and cursive, bound ones, but mostly cursive) , I remember things more easily and am more creative than when typing :3
Yes to all of these, my students who handwrite their notes have much better retention and will get to the higher level thought processes faster. It also helps with focus for students (and myself) with ADHD and dyslexia they have less distractions at their fingertips, they can draw and arrange the notes to help them focus. The red and blue spelling and grammar checks are nice but they can stop thought flow in its tracks.
can you make a video about some printed paper origami papers sheets or journaling supplies 2 that would be helpful for many people especially crafters like me
1. Write notes by hand 2. Read and type the notes 3 read the notes in a voice recorder. 4. Listen to the notes 5. Explain the process in your own words
Some tips if you want them Hey You Yes You :) are you Tired Working 2-5 hours on notes heres a tip to Orginized your notes more at a Time 1. Set a 30 Minute Timer 2. Pick a Subject to do (school subject to) 3. after the timer runs out go on another topic when it runs out go back to it :) 4. I Hope this helps 5. or create a school note rountine
I agree with all the reasons but especially #2 Using a smartphone or laptop you constantly want to check your email or maybe look up the definition of a word online and the next thing u know you’re watching dog videos Paper is much less distracting and also more accessible
I prefer writing by hand as well. Also, there are phones that have stylus's built into them as well as regular styluses for screen writing. Does that count as an acception?
I love fountain pens, but I gotta admit, Ipads are incredible for note taking. you can easily share/erase/edit the notes and, and they usually don't easily get damaged with water, the ipads aren't waterproof but I somehow always keep that in mind unlike notebooks lol. you can backup your notes automatically too. they're more environmentally friendly too. but ipads start at 400$ for a meh one and 800-1000$ for a good one, and they also have batteries "tho tbh pretty big ones" and they don't have the same awesome feel of ink flowing under your hands, and Atlhough I heard apple is way better at this, the samsung ones suck at palm rejection. i think i'm gonna use a nice paper/ink for my college when i get there, it feels nice to feel ink under your hands :3
Given how badly many people grip their pens, sometimes I wonder what's good to recommend, handwriting or typing. I sometimes cringe when I see the grips of many people, thinking about the cramps and ultimately the injuries (hopefully not) in the future.
Hello jet pens , I'm watching your videos from a while now a got a lot of your suggested stationaries but as I live in india the export duty is super expensive so I wonder can you review Indian stationaries at jet pens I mean like notebooks, pens, fountain pens and stuff and can you please review the paper of classmate note books and stuff I would be lovely if I'll see a video on my request ❤️✨
My handwriting is so atrocious, i wont be able to understand it. Ive always envied those whose notes are so neat, with diff colored pens and highlighters, those who can do calligraphies and journaling..
I've been taking notes for a little over 3 years now, and I can confirm that writing down notes in your own words really helps with understanding the topic better for exams. I always take notes for exams and I always pass my exams👍
I'm writing a novel by hand. Have started many novels on my laptop - but never got as far as I've done with my current novel. Much easier to carry a cheap ring bound A4 book along than a laptop. When I have 10min to write I just open the book and start - not waste the same amount of time for my laptop to power up and load up the manuscript. The process also feels more natural and organic - and I have a great excuse for buying new pens ☺️
I’m really skeptical about that “research” about memory retention and using uniball pens. Even if it’s true there are probably other reasons why the information was better retained, it’s NOT because they were writing with a uniball pen.
There has been a study in Germany too about writing by hand and memory. They have the same conclusion but they don't narrow it down to a specific pen brand - that actually sounds like advertising
It's like all the "research" about vitamin supplements that come out from the vitamin manufacturers themselves. Unless its a randomized controlled trial, I don't really trust the results
For someone who frequently switches between languages, getting the keyboard to give me the right diacritical marks can be very distracting and frustrating. Writing by hand is much more stress free in this aspect, plus it's easier to have all of one language in one ink colour when all I have to do is grab another pen. I also find that doodling helps me focus, so when I'm tying things out I always have to type very quickly or my mind will wander.
Writing by hand really helps with getting thoughts and ideas out there for certain people. It's not for everyone, but these points are quite relatable 🤗
I agree, just recently when I was in college, the teacher talked so fast I started to type out everything but couldn't pass my test. Once I started to record the lectures and writing out more I did better.
The more we get to used to digital (typing) the more that we find ot hard to write it legibly. Of course, every handwriting is unique because it represents you.
As much as I love handwriting, I spent most of this semester typing due to the speed of it and bc my wrist wouldn't end up tired/in pain. But I definitely saw a dip in my legibility once I had to write during the short answer section for finals. Now that I'm on break, I can go back to practicing in my journal and hopefully improve!
Great video, as usual!! Hey guys, could you make one with suggestions of bullet journal spreads for college students (like me). I know there are tons of this kind of video on the internet but with JetPens quality there is none, that's for sure!!
I think the issue with typing is because the keys (unless you get custom keypads of course) feel the same and the part of your brain that learns from the sense of touch and feeling texture can't tell from touch alone that the buttons being pushed are different despite feeling mostly the same. With writing, there's the sense of touch and muscle memory of flexing muscles and moving joints with a tool in-hand to create words on a page. It's more of a difference in tactile surfaces and how we interact with them. That's just my guess, I am not an expert in this stuff so I could be wrong.
Although I have been clocked at typing 100 wpm (on an IBM Selectric, no less) I much prefer writing by hand. I use different colors and often draw ideas. My pet peeve is when people hold their writing instrument “incorrectly”. I know it’s a personal preference but kids today cannot write cursive because they never learned how to hold a pencil the right way. Frustrating.
As I was in school well before the laptop, I took all my notes by hand. Ballpoint, as I had trouble finding ink for my fountain pen back then. And the combination of a ballpoint and hurried note taking destroyed my handwriting for the next few decades... Took a stroke and getting back to a fountain pen (everything else hurts to write with, now), and practice, and I have decent handwriting again. 😁 Even the letters I send out I feel help. Not only my handwriting, but retention of things in general.
My ideal "notepad" would feel and act just like a pad of paper, but instantly transmit a digital copy (both image and text) to my computer for easy editing, searching and sharing later. Basically what I do now with phone pics or a scanner but with less steps.
even tho I’m still young I grew up with handwriting only. this helped to prevent copying from the net so teachers never let us give in typed papers until college. but now even the school rules are changing & teachers prefer typed essays bc it’s easier for them to read & students can’t cheat with given page numbers. I think both should be used bc there are occasions when one is more appropriate & pragmatic then the other I also believe that handwriting should be a part of everyone’s life. it’s good for the brain & for creativity
Haha, even if it was, why would JetPens say "yes"? You must realize that even though the reasons they list for writing by hand are valid, this is essentially one long commercial meant to persuade you to buy pens/pencils. By the way, I don't see how a cloud is actually better storage because such services may fail or be hacked. Digital storage is definitely vulnerable. Unless your home is set ablaze or you don't know to keep liquids at a distance (permanent inks are available, though), whatever you write down on paper is fairly safe.
There have been multiple studies showing that students retain new info better when they read it from paper rather than a backlit screen, which is what almost everything electronic is. So the answer to your question is no, not completely.
Agree with all of your thoughts. I have found...as I am sure many others also have, that doing almost all my text on a keyboard has left my hand and finger muscles needing to be retrained. ....Your video would be more enjoyable Without that background sound track.
I have more reasons why people generally write better on paper than on the computer, or anywhere else. Your computer will stop working , or there is something in your computer a virus or whatever and you lose what you typed. On the sheet of your paper you can read it through and improve what you want to type and think about, but it is sometimes true that you may have to print it right away or have a copy made with the copier , so I prefer writing 🖋️ Even though my hands will hurt
Can confirm that writing stuff is very helpful for memorisation. Also, back when I was at university, I would write a lot of notes/references in the back art of my workbook for different essays before writing it up on screen. It really did help.
Reason 2 is so true for me. RU-vid will save you in school and also sink you. I sit down looking at Fourier Transforms that turns into kittens and then pimple popping and then alternate history theories annnnnnd.....your assignment is now due in 6 minutes :(
