Other tip I have is to write the characters in some kind of box because that helps you to keep the size of the characters the same. That becomes more difficult the more radicals are added.

Oh this was cool to see! I also love that I recognized a few, even some were exactly the same as Japanese :D I'm curious how the physical SRS is treating you. Do you like it so far?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my physical cards. Writing them is additional exposure to the word, and i have my little collection so i can see the continued growth of my learning. Vs seeing a number in anki. I'll be doing this for a while i think!

I learned to write 2000 kanji by hand using RTK. I don't particularly regret it because it was kind of fun, I think it is a cool skill to have and now the kanji are pretty well edged into my brain. Still now I am convinced that just learning to recognize is way easier than writing because there are just so many little details that you to remember when writing that you don't need when reading. So if you are just writing to aid learning I would suggest to at least try to learn to just recognize and see if it is faster.

I mainly just want to be able to communicate effectively. I can speak a bit and have conversations from time to time, but i want to be able to go deeper than i currently can.

These days I don't do any Chinese writing practice at all basically, but when I was taking Mandarin courses in college, we would have a vocab quiz in each class that required writing, so I would definitely quiz myself by writing characters over and over again. I don't feel like I have a need to write Chinese characters in my life right now, but I don't regret all the time I spent practicing writing Chinese those years ago, because at least if I ever do need to write Chinese, I don't have that kindergartener handwriting anymore that beginners often have. My handwriting is still pretty ugly/messy, don't get me wrong, and I don't have active recall of many characters that I can easily recognize while reading, but at least my characters are decently proportional lol. Are you trying a physical SRS system to change things up, or do you like the tactile nature of it more? I like the idea of it, but the time-consuming nature of physically writing always deters me.

My main focus with this is to try and help with learning. I've always found there to be a significant increase in retention when i write things by hand. I wanted to try doing a Leitner Box, i'm so tired of anki so i decided to go old school with hand made flash cards. As of now i do not regret it one bit!

I don't know what your goals are but I think it bit strange that you are learning from your own hand written flash cards where the shape of the characters are wrong to begin with. I mean there are very particular dimensions and shapes that the characters have and if you are learning to write anyway you don't lose anything by striving towards the right shape, not that the right shape very important.

I’m not. I’m learning from a program. I have my hand written cards as well but have a digital version to check and refer to as well
