In this video, I compose a piece of music in real-time from start to finish in 40 minutes, using Spitfire Audio's Appassionata Strings, Chamber Strings, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Albion V Tundra sample libraries. From piano sketch to orchestration, mixing and mastering, I hope there will be something interesting for you to take away from this video!

I have learned SO MUCH from just this short sojurne of yours Dan. At 70 years old I finally have my own small home studio, learning piano a bit and orchestration. Thank you so much and yes...we're NEVER to old or young to learn and reach for our dreams. I've been able to afford some Spitfire libraries but most of these are unfortunately out of my "Wallet". :)

Nothing gives me more joy than the feeling of solidarity when watching the re-recordings, the bum notes, the annoying zoom accidental that happens in piano roll! Such lovely writing, Dan. So nice to watch someone else going through their specific process.

Dam, absolutely great video. Learning a lot from you. Would you be willing to make a short video, you can use this composition, on what you have on your busses and how you EQ and treat your instruments over the entire project. It would be such an enormous help to get that beautiful well balanced sound you have in your mixes and masters. There the spitfire instruments are so beautifully recorded I often wonder if hard EQing and compressing the instruments is taking away the quality and of course if it is even needed. So, hopefully you are willing to lift the curtain and want to show us what you use and how you do it. I saw you also have the fab EQ, who doesn't right 🙂 - Thanks in advance

Really gorgeous cue Dan - something beautiful emerging from the precursor to the covid lurgy brain fog! Really nice to observe your process and demonstration of how contemporary composition by 'synthestrating' and just working from a sketch can develop into a really beautiful moment of music where the ability to drag notes around, select different articulations and control them (cool MIDI controller btw - what is it? I have a Monogram setup that I splashed out for and wrote my own customised mappings, always enjoying the geekery of using it - but I think the extra travel in that one probably lends itself to more precise control over dynamics / expression etc.) all within a DAW is really just so massively empowering for musicians and the ability to get 'that sound' that, as you say, makes you cry out of every pore! It's really something very special that all this work and research into audio has resulted in! The precision and immense engineering capability of analogue audio since the 40s ish I think now matched by the incredible palette of colours and potential that digital music making affords!! I love Spitfire - amazing company with an amazing ethic - bravo to you all! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Love this. Thanks for sharing. Random question for anyone who knows - my libraries are BIG and my PC struggles to run them without crashing Kontakt or my DAW. I have a very powerful custom built PC (latest intel processor, rtx 3080, 64g ram) and wondering what I'm missing. I've searched online and have not found an answer. How do you have SO many instruments lined up in Logic and it not crash?
@VilhelmG
@VilhelmG 11 дней назад
It depends. Your specs ought to be good enough for your PC to handle your library. Check if your PC is running properly (you can download apps for this) and obviously any cracked software will always perform worse/crash. See if any change in your Logic settings have any impact. If it’s a PC issue you should sent it in for inspection, software issue - reach out to their support. t could be a multitude of reasons but those are my first thoughts

We are literally dreaming of a 35 degree day 🥵🥵🥵
@DanKeenMusic
@DanKeenMusic Год назад
I think it’s two things: 1) We’re not used to it. Usually we get mid to high 20s in the summer so the 40 degrees we had last week was unbearable 2) insulation in UK is designed to keep heat in, as it tends to be cool most of the year. So hot air comes in and then gets trapped and can’t escape

@superblondeDotOrg
@superblondeDotOrg Год назад
@@DanKeenMusic Because pencil & paper would eliminate the crutches demonstrated in the video (at the expense of inability to demonstrate Spitfire products in real-time). 1. 'Composing' is the art of taking a premeditated musical idea and setting it down in a determined way for a cohesive artistic purpose vs. 02:00 "I really have no idea..lets see what comes out today." The latter has more in common with stream-of-consciousness spontaneous randomness compared to definite and determined composing. 2. A big portion is not composing but instead sound design 11:44 "I'm gonna change my (instruments/timbre) because (it does stuff)" 13:29 "Lets just add some more layers and see how that works". 15:35 "What I'm gonna do is add even more reverb" 3. Most of what is featured in terms of writing is improvisation 16:40 "Lets just continue on this train... (trial and error playing) Thats quite nice" 26:10 "These tools make me a better composer because if I were to play this with a sine wave or Sibelius's absolutely awful choir, I wouldn't have been moved by that chord" 3. Relatively positive that your prior composition instructors would agree that composing is done in the musical imagination and thus best set down on paper first without external instruments (and for very good, deep reasons) although they are likely too polite to call out DAW users publicly for their lack of adherence to this foundational principle of the art. 4. Writing as score notation eliminates the frequent type of problem run into here 32:25 "There is definitely something wrong here" . 5. The remainder of what is being done is arranging or orchestration as in 35:25 "Now if you want to make it a little bit bigger or better or whatever (let's add another instrument like Celeste and add rhythm)". In conclusion there should be a new word invented for what this video is actively doing, for example if it is called Dawing (from DAW) that would seem to be a more legitimate term, rather than the continued watering down of the term of and the art of Composition.
@onnooo
@onnooo Год назад
The Cambridge dictionary literally says: compose: to produce music, poetry, or formal writing. You write it on paper, other people create/produce it differently. Not sure what's your problem here, and why you'd feel the urge calling our people doing things differently than yourself. Art is art :-)
@villebooks
@villebooks Год назад
@@onnooo What do you mean by "our people"? It's everyone's right to comment, no matter if some agree or disagree. Any community of arts has been staying alive with the exchange of controversy and lively discussion. Don't forget, everything we all debate in the www depends on definition and presets, like language or science doctrine. So yes, I agree with you, art is art, and the way how we create art is complex and diverse. But let objections live! The algorithms still do the filtering for us, we should not end in the oblivion of a binary dogma.
