I’m glad you had such a great experience at the retreat! Sometimes like just having some of that external validation can be so helpful in helping you rediscover your story in a way. It’s so easy to write in a silo and get really caught up in your head. It seems like this kind of one on one time and mentorship really worked out for you which is wonderful!

Relating soooo hard to the BIPOC author chat (I’m Nigerian). I remember for an old project of mine, having a lot of West African lore and both feeling like it had to be there because people seem to only want BIPOC authors to write about their specific cultures, but also worrying it was too exclusive??? So weird. But I’m so happy you had this experience and that it’s motivated you! Super looking forward to follow along the journey for MIYA!!

Loved hearing about your writing retreat experience and time with Maggie, Kelley! I also haven't been reading as much these last few months but finally borrowed a book from the local library last week and it feels so good to be reading again! I hope you feel more reassured about your writing and that you're excited to continue working across your projects. I've been super curious about this retreat, thank you for sharing, Kelley! I agree that recently most YA Fantasy that goes viral is romantasy with lots of spiciness and focus on viral tropes, which makes us wonder how reader expectations have changed, but I personally would really love to find more well-crafted YA stories that don't rely solely on tropes and hot men/boys.

Hahaha tropes and hot men/boys 💀😭 the genre is definitely changing, but I’m glad there are readers out there like us who want more well-crafted YA books that aren’t solely focused on romantasy 🥹 that makes me feel good ☺️

I'm glad that this retreat reminded you how much you're doing what you're meant to be doing. It seems like it was wonderful (didn't even know those kinds of retreats with established authors were a thing!). I've been kinda wondering myself if I write for readers or myself and I think it's one of those 'column A and column B.' I want this to be my job (eventually my only job; lol I know the statistics mean that's unlikely, but I just pretend I can't read them lmao) so I don't mind picking an idea that I would really like to love spending years on with readers in mind a bit ('a bit' to 'some;' I think only writing for readers completely for too long would lead to burnout for me personally). I hope you're exactly where you want to be with MIYA next year!

Glad to hear that your retreat helped you understand yourself better as a writer! I also struggle with wondering if I'm being "diverse" or "inclusive" enough as a BIPOC writer.

Also it's cool to see that there's a checkup after the retreat, I thought that once the retreats over it's over, y'know? And maybe you made friends or something.
