In this video, I show you how to install, what I think, is the #1 best mod for a 22" Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. I'll show you step by step how simple it is to install an UnknownBBQ hinge on your WSM. Enjoy!
I just did this an hour ago with the help of your video . This is better than any instruction sheet ! I am not a tool handy person and my wife wanted it installed by our local grill technician. He quoted me 150 usd for the install , not including bits, paint or tape just for an estimated 3 hrs install . I just took a chance and it was so easy . Thanks !!!
A grill technician..? I was a maintenance technician on refineries and such, i met and heard of several technicians, but a grill technician, that's a good one, must be some high tech-grill .....🤣🤣😭😭
Great video. I followed this and it all worked out. I did start off with a drill bit that was too small and that broke, other than that it was was all good. Thanks
One thing you have to remember is a lid gasket (to seal the smoke). If you install this with a gasket already installed, plan on replacing the gasket if the old one gets funky. Or it will be out of alignment. If you don’t have a gasket and plan on installing one, do that before mounting the hinge.
I wish the install had been as easy as this video. I did manage to install the hinge, but only after going through three 1/8" drill bits. I finally had to use a dremel with the 1/8" bits to get them to cut through the porcelain coating. And even though I had the bottom part of the hinge aligned horizontally when drilling the holes. The right side of the hinge bracket is a tad lower than the left, so it's not perfectly aligned as I had tried to do. At some point in time, I might use a dremel tool to cut the holes into slots so I can shift the lower bracket until it's level, but for now the hinge does work and the lid sits flat so I won't worry about it.
Thanks, Lasse! I actually had this hinge for a while, just never put it on. Once I got a 22 tho, I definitely knew right away that it needed one. Thanks for watching! 🍻
Thanks...installed it easily ..seems like i need to add clasps to the body now ...the lid when lifting sometimes pulls the main chamber out of its seat
@@xxkasperxx - 🤔 I’d be surprised to see it happen when it’s loaded and w/ water or sand in the water pan. Lockers aren’t a bad thing to have, they just aren’t cheep.
That was the first mod I added when I got my WSM several years ago. It's definitely been a game changer. I didn't think to tape the hinge brackets to the smoker lol I wish I would have though
You could, but it’s easier to just use some Krylon high heat spray paint. I’d recommend spraying a tad in a cup and then just brushing it into the holes. Might set you back $5.
I just attempted this... but made the rookie move of drilling all 6 holes at once. Well, turns out, my top and bottom dont align to let lid be closed. Trying to figure out how im going to correct my screw up. I'm off by about 1cm.
I have an 18.5 WSM and have this hinge to install. My struggle is what cover will fit over the smoker once this is on? I need a cover as my smoker is not sheltered and without a cover the WSM collects rain water in the bottom.
If i decide to keep my wsm this is definitely in the works. Do you find a certain drill bit works better. I drilled in to my kettle and it was chip city. Had to touch up with high heat paint. Looking for a clean drill through to avoid this
I always wonder why Weber did not make this standard in these bullet smokers. It just seems like a no-brained, but I get it, the cost is reasonable enough and well it would likely have added cost and the hinge itself is not that expensive.
Lol! I knew someone would ask that. It’s certainly and option, but I chose to skip it. Given how tight this thing is, I doubt I’ll rust much, if at all. 🍻
