Can you WSPR? This video is the fourth in a series about propagation beacons. The Weak Signal Propagation Reporter is a system designed by Joe Taylor, K1JT, a Nobel laureate, to study HF propagation. You can participate both by listening and transmitting. Thank you for watching my videos! My channel, "Ham Radio Answers," is here to help you become an active, on-the-air amateur radio operator! I am unique in that I provide the only set of RU-vid training videos that accompany the ARRL license manuals, section for section. I try hard to answer every Ask Dave question individually if I can.
Credits: Music (Sour Tennessee Red) courtesy RU-vid Audio Library: ru-vid.com.... I often use graphics from openclipart.org -- a great source! I also frequently use photos and videos from www.nasa.gov.
I'm often asked what equipment I use to create the videos. The devices include the Panasonic HDC-TM90 video camera, Tascam DR-05 audio recorder, Audio-Technica ATR-3350 lapel microphone, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W560 digital camera, the Kodak Zi-8 video camera, my iPhone 5S, and Pentax K100D DSLR. Software used: CyberLink PowerDirector 13 on a Toshiba S55-A5294, also using Smoothdraw 4.0.5.0, FastStone Image Viewer 5.3, FastStone Capture 8.0, Audacity 2.1.1., and LibreOffice 5.0.4.2. Hi Dave. Thanks for an excellent explanation of WSPR. Your clear explanations are a gift to the ham community and helped me to set up my WSPR system to compare my magnetic loop antennas. You've got me hooked! 73s Andy F4HCB

The beauty of this is that one does not have to be an amateur radio operator to monitor the signal exchanges and transmission / reception paths. I find this very curious. I can enter an amateur radio call sign and I can see where it has had a reception report. I just choose a callsign very close to where I live and see where the signal goes! I am not an amateur radio operator. Thus, I can not adjust a signal that a transceiver would produce at my house because there is no transceiver at my house. But I can select different stations close to my home qth and see how far signals go.

Great video! For computer timekeeping, I like to use Dimension 4. It runs in the background and automatically sets your clock at intervals you specify. You never have to reset it manually again.

Hi Dave .. Thanks for sharing ~ Based on the results shown By WSPR , have you ever used the numbers shown to calculate and improve a transmitting Antenna? Do you know of any examples as I am looking for anything to learn from - cheers

Might want to change the Windows 10 setting the time. I tried following your directions and things change in 6 years. I did find a way to "synchronize" the time but that's about it. Will this work?

It's difficult to go back and edit the videos you post to YT fro 6yrs ago. I know what you mean though. It messes with the analytics of your engagement, not that Dave is tracking all of that. Good to know though on your comment - I will be setting this up in a few weeks, thanks.

Hi David: had a question for you to explore about the GPS data that; for instance that the OLG-1 GPS unit sends to the OCX and then is sent on from the transmitter to the WSPR system. How is it done? Can I use a neo-6m/7m gps module to do the same thing as the OLG-1 providing it sends out the standard NEMA serial data stream. Question is; has Hans had the GPS modules in his OLG-1 kit pretty programmed to send a specific set for the time and maidenhead location?
@davecasler
@davecasler 4 года назад
I think it uses standard NEMA messages. You'd have to check with Hans.

Hi Dave, I really appreciate your videos. About WSPR and WSJT-X recommended SW, is there any JT65 SW for tablets (android) ? I´ve just found JT65android from C.H. Bos on Google play Store. Thanks, Augusto, LU3AFB.
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
I'm not aware of any, but that's because I've always used my laptop for JT65. The key is how the device sends and receives audio signals and how the transceiver is keyed. If you do find something that works, please post here as I'd like to take a look at it. 73, Dave

What do you think on WSPRlite?
@davecasler
@davecasler 7 лет назад
I hadn't heard of it until you mentioned it. I looked it up on the Internet and it looks interesting. I think before I use that, I want to build a more "standard" WSPR kit that is on all the time. This is a future project, but not on my immediate horizon. Thanks for bringing up the idea--I'll keep looking for info.

3:14 Are the signal paths curved because of the roundness of the earth and if that map was on a globe all those lines would be straight? The curve to australia seems too far out unless thats so you can see them and not just an accurate curvature map. (Please don't start with flat earth bs that mucks up every good science video)
@eddaley2804
@eddaley2804 5 лет назад
Yup. If you stretch a string over a globe between ay 2 points, you will see the shortest distance between them...a great circle. Generally, these are the same paths that we follow when we fly between cities.
