A full edition of "10 Eyewitness News Nightcast" on WTEN (channel 10) in Albany, New York. WTEN used this title from January of 1988 to October of 1994 for its late news, now it is just simply "News 10 (ABC) at 11."
Dick Wood anchors the news alone, Joe Sottile has "WeatherPlus," Steve Shapiro has sports, plus reports from ABC News, Elisa Streeter and Renee Chenault. Marci Elliott had the evening off. Fun fact: Renee Chenault (later Fattah) later worked at WCAU in Philadelphia alongside future WTEN anchor Tim Lake; she anchored the noon news at the time, and her predecessor Kim Adams also worked in Philly (at KYW).
In the news, Saratoga County has issues with 911, the latest polls on the 1988 presidential race with all eyes on Dan Quayle, Bob Lawson interviews congressman John Anderson at Siena College (looks like that interview was shot in their then-student union), some whales get stuck behind icebergs and are under a rescue mission, the AIDS death toll is predicted to rise in the next decade as the CDC rolls out a new awareness campaign, a retirement home holds a World Series watch party, AT&T plans to cut long distance rates and the latest fall foliage report.
In sports it's the Dodgers vs. the Athletics in the World Series, high school football gets a conference realignment (Guilderland - my alma mater - was moved to Division II, while the big schools like Albany and Shenendehowa were Division I), and Shappy advertises the "TV10 Sports Patrol" with music drowning out his voice. He left WTEN in March of 1989 and was replaced with Rip Rowan (who preceded him; Rip filled in on Monday's while Ed O'Brien did Tuesday-Sunday); Steve Shapiro eventually had a long stint as the sports director at WSVN until December of 2020.
The production values on this newscast are NOT good. The Home & City Savings Bank sponsors airs twice, the graphics (specifically during the election and HS conference realignment segments) are out of place and often misspelled, and they also run a minute under schedule, leaving time for a long news close. No wonder WTEN was in third place and undergoing ownership changes. The problem was, the changes didn't help.
The news theme is Shelly Palmer's eponymous news package, which uses the CBS Enforcer signature. Dude Walker voices the opens and outro, while then-staff announcer George Leighton voices the sponsor. Leighton (an employee since sign-on) was among the casualties of the ownership change; he died in 2000.
Also will give due respect to the late Dick Wood who held it together during the rough era that was WTEN at the time. The ownership changes had him run out his contract, which expired in 1991; by that point Jim Brennan was anchoring at 11pm.
