One of the best recommendations to catch #Maanaadu on the big screen! This Tamil time loop thriller is a great example of how stars can take the leap of doing risky projects! The film starring #Simbu better known as STR with the opposite lead played by #SJSuryah is directed by Venkat Prabhu and is definitely worth your time and money in theatres. I hope you like the Maanaadu Movie Review & Analysis

There is a scene where the heroine imagines blood coming out of his Simbu's nostrils. That is a reference to his iconic scene in Manmadhan. All this fan service happens a lot in the first 20 minutes. ( The fat shaming joke just to reference Simbu's fat to fit transformation 😂). It is done to make the Simbu fans settle down ( and it is very self aware about it, like Simbu tells ' Let's do the work necessary' in the car scene)

I feel happy as Tamil cinema is slowly moving away from roping in Bollywood models and northern stars to play antagonists . I dont know if you have been following STR since the mid-2000s. He was among the fittest actors in the Tamil industry then. No problems with weight. No problems with producers or directors. A good actor who did decent movies. And as usual, some movies were a hit and some were a flop. Then dont know what ghost entered him, he was totally lethargic in his acting, script selections, attitude, food, etc. Heavy weight gain and constant problems with the producers and directors. People were constantly trolling him for his attitude and weight gain. Once on the stage itself, he was almost trolled by the public for being lethargic. Every movie he did was tolled by reviewers for the weight gain. Many were actually saying like "how were you and see what you are now" but few were like "hey loser you deserve such treatment". Now he has reformed to the old STR and is giving a comeback and that's why many dialogues about his fitness. Compare STR to someone like Sanjay Dutt or Robert Downey Jr. Were responsible for their own downfall. Then now they are great names in their second innings. STR is following that track. There is no shame in falling down. Shame is in not getting up. Sanjay Dutt got up. RDJ got up. Now STR has got up.

Tamil movie audience is a loyal audience. Once they like the star, unless he does some a string of really bad movies or some big (and I mean really massive) PR blunders, they won't usually turn on them. Which makes it a good bet for the creators who can bet on that loyalty and make movies without worrying about whether it will open and how much opening it will make.

The movie shifted gears the moment SJ Suryah stepped in. He was just fab. Also the praise you heard about STR by other characters was because of his real life physical transformation. He was super fat before this film and he had shed a lot of weight. The other characters praising him for becoming fit wouldn't have existed otherwise. I do agree that it was a fanfare moment but it dint bother me too much because the rest of the movie was devoid of that so I could give that one scene a pass. Also it was a cool kinda breaking the fourth wall moment and talking about the elephant in the room i.e. his mind-blowing physical transformation.

That's because the Telugu and Tamil heroes respond to social issues, donate money, sit on dharnas, join politics and rule. Telugu and Tamil heroes aren't 'shown' as larger than life, they ARE larger than life. I can think of people like Sunny Deol, etc who went into politics. I can think of people like Sonu Sood who did tremendous social work. But in Tamilnadu and the Two Telugu States, it is a part of the culture, it is a given thing. There's a political party in Andhra Pradesh now which was the main opposition in the Indian Parliament itself. Now, people are raising slogans that a film hero belonging to the family that established this political party to leave his lucrative film career and take up the mantle of the leader of the party and lay claim to the chief ministership in 2024. This hero is like 37, 38 years old. He was a big hit in the election canvassing during 2009 when he was just 26. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. These star heroes are both in the public eye and also do public service. They have a tremendous understanding of the culture and the needs of the people. What's wrong if they are depicted as larger than life on the screen.

Jammy, the reason for all the praise for the actor's fitness is because, for the last couple of years, STR has had major issues with his weight. The most impressive part of Maanaadu is the writing process of Venkat Prabhu. Typically, any other writer would look for original concepts within the genre that sets it apart from other time-loop movies. But, Venkat Prabhu flips it and borrows ideas from several time-loop films and adds his own twist at the interval mark. All of these ideas combined blend perfectly in its entirety keeping us at the edge of our seats. This is a great example, on how originality isn't everything. You still can create a hell of a screenplay if you can respect the viewer's intelligence.

It's ironic that the South movies are accused of glorifying heroes, while Bollywood has been doing that for ages. But that's part and parcel of the film, you can't complain about that, because these are stars and their fans need moments like that to be on the big screen. It's the thing that brings the fan to the theaters. The glorification that you referred at the start was due to the physical transformation of the hero, it may not sound that big of a thing, but they had to shoot a major part of the first half once again, as STR had lost so much weight that they couldn't match it with the CG. In short, if the content is good, a few minutes of glorification for the heroes fans isn't going to spoil the party.

@Enna Ranga Soakk Katringala Our films are not successful because commercial driven masala content and only nepotism ass 🤣🤣🤣 That's because they are unique, entertaining and deliver what Indian movie goers in general want.... And what happened to your Tamil market ass? 🤣 Just day before yesterday you had the largest market in South India.... With Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and lots of diaspora.... 🤣 Tollywood market grew because of our directors successes and heroes hardwork so they are now accepted throughout India.... Just look at the dubbing films in RU-vid.... They make movie to entertain.... Not just gangster movies or always propoganda films like casteism and all.... Half the Tamil movies have the same whining.... FYI most of the Telugu commercial films after 2000s were remade by almost all movie industries including yours like your clown Vijay also remade, and Tamilians still argue those remake versions are better than the originals.... Shankar and Mani Ratnam were once great when I was growing.... After 2015, Tollywood became a lot less commercial and in the last 5 years there have a been a shift towards genre based cinema especially the low budget movies.... Whereas Tamil commercial cinema turned cringe.... Even movies like Arjun Reddy and Jersey became nation wide phenomena and the same directors were called in to direct the Hindi versions.... Another movie is HIT, and RX100, and now Naandi.... And many more....

SJ Suryah's role was the trailor made for him ,he just stole the entire show the way he acts or speaks and his unique voice and style just elevated the entire movie and as for STR he was always a good performer (like manmadhan , vallavan ,VTV.etc) and a not to forget a splendid dancer that "how fit he was" reference was because he went through a tremendous physical transformation he was recipient to many trolls and bodyshaming , a few bad choices did make him dull for sometimes ,it was not a hero worship it's more of an inside joke or kind of him assuring his fans audience that he has bounced back, but mahesh babu scene was entirely different cringeful and not to mention unnecessary to the plot i absolutely have 0 excuses for that

The reason their friends are saying that STR is sooo fit how good he has changed is a reference to his real life . This is his 1st film after his fat to fit transformation . So only when you are aware of Tamil film environment you can get these dialogues and jokes .

Interesting that you watched this. Liked your review. Just for context: STR is sort of the "bad boy" star of the TN industry. He has had issues with the press and producers and directors who have worked with him alleging his unprofessionalism. But he's a talented actor who does mainstream movies with a little bit of edge to the protagonist, and has a passionate and loyal fanbase who generally support him through all this. He's also regarded as a solid and capable talent by pretty much all filmmakers who work with him. I would recommend watching Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya (which was remade in Hindi also with Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson) and also Mani Ratnam's Chekka Chivandha Vaanam which has an all star cast. Also, S.A Chandrashekhar who you mentioned in your review is Thalapathy Vijay's dad. :D

@@ratulhasan165 no no you are speaking of a part in the middle of the movie. That's not what am talking about. Am speaking about literally at the end, right before the credits, where he wakes up at the hospital having passed the day. Then he would stand to fight the goons, smiling. But the twist is after credit finishes, the last few seconds of the movie (post credit) it will show him having woken up back in the plane. *Meaning that he is forever to wake back up in the plane, but what's worse is that the cop is alive again! That was a dark and twisted ending 😬*

Bro ,It's because of STRs star value and huge fan following, some hero worshipping elements there .He was a same time emerged star at the time of Vijay, Surya, Ajit etc, and had a seperate fan base like those stars. He used to weigh 100 kilos. But he made a transformation in the last two years. And that's the reason those dialogues were placed in the beginning of the movie. And I completely agree it's unnecessary. But these are small the elements that cater the fdfs audiences. Which you have to bear.

The man deserves all that buildup! He has been through a lot of shit. He’s quite emotional and so are his fans. So first 30 minutes are a must for the fan following, without which a huge part of the audience will be disappointed!! This is the land of Rajnikanth the hero worshiping and fan following go hand in hand. It’s gonna take some time to change this trend!!

2:42...I also noticed the dialogues about the fitness of STR. Since I'm following from the past few years, I immediately understood what they meant.
