WTF Happened to JIM CARREY?

In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In our latest episode we tackle the ultra funnyman Jim Carrey, who has built an empire out of his rubber-faced comedic antics, leaving a long list of fan-favorite films in his wake. Carrey started out like most comedians, doing stand-up, before landing a role on the TV ensemble In Living Color, which rocketed him to Hollywood. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective lit the fuse and from there the actor stacked gem after gem onto his resume. Then, Carrey tried his hand at some more dramatic fare with both good and not-so-good results. Then, his work became more sporadic and he began to develop his tastes as an artist and painter, while dealing with some personal issues as well. But, Carrey can't be kept down and continues to reemerge from time to time to show that he's still here and still got what it takes, even though we still have to ask the question; WTF Happened to Jim Carrey?

Jim Carrey only made the Grinch because of his daughter, he has said in interviews he played the roll for her and would have done it for free, so any critique of it didn't matter to him, as long as his daughter enjoyed it.

The Cable Guy was such a fantastic film. Its definitely what made me like him. I found him almost intolerable before, and the irony that the intolerable Chip was so endearing and identifiable, in an adolescent way? I would love to read your paper, and the guy who done The Truman Show one. Great films and great choices for papers. 👍👍

@@shakesfirst2443 Yes, I'm sure he signed a contract. And while I'm no Hollywood insider, I'd be willing to bet that included in that contract were provisions for being available for promotion of the finished product. However, my larger point was that if he felt the movie's ethics were lacking because it "glorified gun violence", then why are you even willing to act in it? Why create a product that you are unwilling to be proud to promote? For example, if I think that recreational use of Meth is bad, I'm not going to help someone set up a Meth Lab, then later say with grandiose condescension, "Oh, I don't believe in taking Meth, it ruins lives..."

The Cable Guy is my favorite Carrey movie. I think his reputation did the film a disservice because people were expecting the same tone as Ace Ventura. "we must show the actors love". Maybe that is part of the problem. Love the work, hate the work. But that isn't who they are. Because of my job I worked with many famous people. I treated them with respect just like I do with everyone I work with. And that was all anyone wants. Treat them like real people and you'll see real people. Idolize them and they will be distant, aloof and cautious. People want something from famous people. Their picture, their autograph, a moment of their time. Stop it. They gave at the office. Being with famous people is enlightening. They aren't magical. They have nothing that will rub off on you. Stop trying to give them something so they will give you something incredible in return.

He was serene and relayed to an interviewer how he was no longer interested in the external because his journey was internal. Then DJT got elected and he woke up from his internal coma long enough to make an ass out of himself as a lot of other actors have done. God knows and I don't care where he is now. Perfect example is that climate summit many of them attend yearly. It’s all done in super posh private locations. They arrive via yachts, private planes or big limos yet they’re lecturing and funding initiatives to stick us all in electric cars, kill coal miners’ jobs, using those dumb cardboard straws, etc. It’s all so utterly ridiculous. Like hey, if you guys care so much about the earth and the climate, live by example. Give your luxury huge ass carbon foot print lifestyles and just live like the rest of us while donating a big chunk of your money to helping poor people, maybe buy those who want them, those electric cars electric cars.

What’s funny about Jim and quite amazing really, is he spent his whole life imitating characters and people only to be paid highly to create and become his own characters. Incredible. He was also good in sonic idc what anyone says

He's underrated and underappreciated. Truly, if the man seeks to further develop as a person and speak his mind, even if it ruins his "career", I support it fully. Do what you can with the time that you have even if it isn't profitable.

My first exposure to Jim Carrey was In Living Color And he was the Talk of the Town. He's the talk of the school. It was the talk of my friends group every week. We couldn't wait to go to school so we could talk with our friends. That what we had seen. The night previous, And of course immediately quote everything that Jim Carrey had said because he was the most quotable guy you could imagine. If you are truly of that era as I am, the phrase "LET ME me show you something!!!!!" immediately brings back the hilarity that enveloped us watching him. We would watch In Living Color and I would Throw a temper tantrum if my parents wanted to go out to eat. During the time that it was on. Because it came on Sunday nights and that's when my parents always wanted to go out to eat at the end of The Weeknd. I tried my best to tape the show, And as a result. , I have many of the original broadcast on VHS tape Jim Carrey the first time they were ever aired on TV as new episodes. Venus de Milo, ride the dragon , Fire, Marshall Bill I have them all. I dare not play the tape today. In fear that the magnetic Substrate will flake off. I'd love to get it transferred. Auntie DVD Why the flash drive for safekeeping

I don't even know why he would have ever wanted to stop doing, comedy I get it actors don't like to get pigeonholed into a certain kind of type-casting but really in my opinion. I feel like everything he's ever even done lately just sucks. Like even up to the Me Myself and old Irene the old Jim Carrey died a long time ago. Shit, he died sometime before he did the fucking Andy Kaufman movie.

A thoughtful and fitting tribute to a great man, who seems to be at peace with himself now. My favorite Jim Carrey quote goes something like this; 'I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.' Pretty sure he tried backing out of his blood oath that most if not all entertainers have to sign to get to the top. A close friend of mine explained it something like this, once they discover your weakness they exploit it and use it against you. This gentleman came through the side door into Hollywood as a bodyguard and was so personable that he quickly started working for personalities like Janet Jackson and Prince, who he later worked for almost exclusively. One night at Prince's nightclub he was upstairs doing some paperwork and an impeccably dressed Man walked up and started talking to him, it was more of a getting to know you conversation but he couldn't help but notice that "Not a hair was out of place, not a stitch of his $10,000 suit was a miss. Shortly after he was brought into the boardroom and all he could tell me was that he had to sign a document or else he had to quit the business. That was when I reconnected with him back home where we came from, and he is still a bit tight-lipped about it all.

Jim Carrey's drama works only because there's an honesty in his acting that works both in his mania and his depression. For anyone that's experienced both sides of that coin in life, it's easy to see how scripted the lives and role selection for most actors is but Jim feels real; Jim is real. I wouldn't say that Jim Carrey has been acting for years, rather he's been projecting the roles, embracing a reality that can be expressed through script. Some would say that's acting, I would not; acting feels fake, it feels setup, it feels directed... What Jim Carrey has been doing, well it feels overly lifelike.
