WTF Happened to Lancia?

The word 'Lancia' in the automotive world brings up an array of different emotions. On one hand, they're known for falling apart and rusting away. But they've also been known for their incredible cars and nigh-on impeccable record in rallying. Today however, they sell only one car and are hardly seen outside of Italy. What the hell happened to them?

@@jamwil200 Yeah but the S4 was still the fastest group b lancia. It could challange the Peugeot but after Henri Toivonen died in Corsica Markku Alén was the leading the championship with Lancia. And Alén "won" the championship. But he found out just over week later that he had lost the championship to Juha Kankkunen because the sanremo rally was not counted as a official wrc rally championship event because the Peugeot's were disqualified for almost no reason. Alén lost lots of points because he had won the rally so Kankkunen with his peugeot won the championship. Well, you're kinda wrong. The Delta S4 was a rally car developed for Group B regulations for 1986 WRC season, to try and fight the mighty Peugeot 205 T16 which won manufacturers title in 85. In 1986 tho a Portuguese driver crashed into a group of people at Rally Portugal killing I think like 3 people and in Rally Corsica one of the biggest talents of that era - Henri Toivonen driving the Delta S4 went off the road and died with his co-driver, that led to Balstre and the FIA banning the Group B and bringing existing Group A regulations to the top. Thus in 1987 Lancia came in with Delta Integrale and basically they had the best car developed which blow everyone else in the field and won manufacturers championship from 87 to 92.

To be even more pedantic: the S4 debuted in the 1985 RAC Rally, the last rally of the 1985 season, and, driven by Toivonen, would set a record on the speed trap there AND would win the rally, which was useless as Peugeot (might have been Audi tho I don't remember) had won the championship already, but it showed just how bonkers the S4 was.

The actual Ypsilon is the Lancia Ypsilon of 12 years ago but with some new details in the interiors or in the look and of course the FIAT 500 engines. It sells a lot beacuse is good in town and because italian car culture is dead with the 2008 crisis where italian governement decided to increase the numeber and price cars taxes (that's why in Italy cars costs more of the cars in many european states or othe states in the world) sports cars and luxury cars were penalizated and many people stopped buying new cars. FIAT tried to bring back Lancia as a european Chrysler seller failing (they renamend the 300 as Thema, the Thema was a luxury sedan with a Ferrari engine), if someone want to task me why FIAT did that.the answer os that FIAT always has bad commercial idea.

You pronounced Lancia correctly. My father’s first job was a tool and die maker for Lancia; he worked there for 11 years before immigrating to Canada to be a tool & die maker for Ford. You pronouncing Lancia correctly means a lot to me. Thank you.

Really nice topic not about a driver but a brand, i liked it. Should you do this again, i would love to see it about Opel, another car maker that once stood on the top steps.

The S4 only competed in the ‘86 season to replace the 037 model that was, as correctly pointed out, outdated against Peugeot and Audi. Starting in 1987 with the ban of Group B, the Delta model was used instead. And it proved to be a winner. Great video.

Dear Josh great ,great work BUUUT the Delta S4 was the replacement for the 037 in Group B after 1984 , the S4 raced in the 1985 and 86 seasons and in the latter a fatal accident occured to the Delta S4 driven By Henri Toivonen with Sergio Cresto at the Tour de Corse Rally stage , Balestre decided to cut off Group B in favor of Group A. So Lancia entered the Delta 4wd , then all the later models that ended with the almighty Delta Integrale of the early 90s ! :)

One slight mistake that I thought I should mention was that the Delta S4 ran on the RAC rally in 1985 and 1986 and then Group A took over from Group B in 87' but apart from that a brilliant video as usual Josh!

TG's efforts to explain about Saab also hits deep. Knowing someone who has a Saab 9-3 Viggin and prior to that a gen 1 900, Saabs were a riot of a little car. Sad to see them gone right now and suffering the same fate as Lancia where overengineering things killed themselves.

Lovely video, Josh! Some stuff that you got wrong about "Warthog" Ascari's demise: He died riding a Ferrari 750 Monza Sporstcar, not a D50. You might got confused with the crash he had during the Monaco GP, where he went to the bottom of the Mediterrenian Sea with his car! Three days later, he was in Monza and got his fatal crash. In fact, he wasn't suppose to be there. They thought he would rest after that crash, but as he only suffered some bruises, he was in Monza watching Eugenio Castelotti driving that car. At lunchtime, he asked Ferrari to let him driving the car, he spun out and the car fell over him. The Variante Ascari was named, not only at his honor, but because it's the place of his fatal crash.

@Josh Revell Congratulazioni ed ottimo lavoro, Josh! It's always a grand thing for us Italians to hear about our car-makers from an "outside" perspective. Allow me to make some notes, though... 0:33 - Close, but no cigar, mate. Better than the common English pronounciation, though. For further reference, it's "Lan-chah": imagine saying "Lance Stroll" and changing it in the middle of the first name. Us Italians will treat you to a proper full course if you do remember :) 3:18 - Jano is pronounced "Ee-ah-no". He was also the father of some of Ferrari's best cars too. 4:17 - Ascari didn't die driving a D50, but test-driving a Ferrari 750 Monza on the same track. Incidentally, the car was officially of his friend Eugenio Castellotti (official Ferrari driver in the Gran Turismo races). Alberto died at 36 years of age, just like his father Antonio did in 1925, in the same way too. This, though, wasn't the death knell for Lancia's ambitions: that came from the banks completely closing the faucets on the whole F1 thing. Gianni Lancia was drowning in debt, both Company-wise and personally, to keep the brand from dying. 4:45 - That's only partially true: FIAT's stake in Lancia began at the 1955 Belgian GP, when Castellotti paid by his own pocket to race there with Lancia: the Factory was completely shut down because of debts and bankruptcy seemed certain, with hundreds of people facing furlough or layoff. Lancia, at the time, had multiple divisions: Car manufacturing, Trucks and public transport (buses, mainly), Military equipment (tanks) and racing. Since the Italian Government had multiple stakes in the company, it orchestrated a buyout along with FIAT, Ferrari (which also got in because the 555 was shit compared to the W196s and was starting to rake in debts to fix it), the Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (a State fund) and the Piacenti family. Piacenti got the ownership and the majority share, wile FIAT got 15% of Lancia and 10% of Ferrari, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti took 39% of Lancia to avoid layoffs in the company (and to not let the State contracts to escape to other companies), while Ferrari took ALL the Lancia's F1 stuff: mechanics, designers, engineers (yes, Jano too, who rejoined with Enzo Ferrari after a hiatus going back to the late '30s), machinery and all but one Lancia D50 car. That single car was kept by Gianni Lancia as a souvenir of his until he died and now it's one of the only two D50s still existing.
