Colin McRae was a driver that was wired to compete at eleven tenths, willing to take risks that others weren't, always getting the most out of every car he drove.
But what made him a legend - wasn't what he did, it was how he did it. Driving every stage with the iconic motto - 'If in doubt, flat out'.
However, these risks often landed him in trouble - gaining a reputation for crashing a lot, costing him two World Rally Championships and ultimately playing a part in his tragic death.
This is the story of why Colin McRae was one of the world's fastest drivers, but ultimately never fulfilled his ultimate potential.
Colin first showed off his flamboyant driving style in 1991, he'd just won the Scottish Rally Championship and made his debut in a Vauxhall Nova.
It was an extremely underpowered car, that he thoroughly out-performed, earning him results that the car really didn't deserve. *Seriously*, he was beating Sierra Cosworths and Peugeot 205s, which were the cars to be in at the time.
His pace got him noticed, and in 1991 Prodrive signed him to their eventually iconic Subaru programme. Where he won the British Rally Championship two years in a row in their Group A Legacy.
This success lead Subaru to enter the World Rally Championship in the following year, with Colin as their star driver. This was the first time Colin's innate need to be flat-out, was shown to the world - where in the Lombard rally, only 25 seconds into the run - he put the Subaru into a ditch.

Personally I'm not a fan, you're hired to win races, not absolutely destroy the competition and end up crashing more often than not. He essentially put his co-drivers life in danger on numerous occasions by disobeying orders/commands such as "don't cut". Yes the man had an incredible talent but his mindset was wreckless and I'd say shouldn't be praised. r.i.p a legend though

I remember having a VHS copy of the 1995 season review. What an amazing driver. Shame that he didn't always was in the right car at the right time, but he was rallying's Gilles Villeneuve : a flamboyant driver, with natural talent to spare, and who sometimes was the victim of his own fearlessness. I remember him, in the 1995 seasons review, explaining why he got a flat tire running on a rock : «I saw the rock, but it wasn't a bad rock, so I ran over it, I saw it». Awesome.

From the get-go, Colin McRae was immensely popular among fans in Finland. It was a time when only Finns would win the 1000 Lakes Rally, but Colin always raced his heart out in pursuit of stage wins. Quickly he earned the nickname "Kilin-Colin" from words "kilinä, kolina" which mean "tinkle, clonk", describing the identifying sound of his battered car flying through the stage.

I'm a federally licensed aircraft mechanic for a major airline. I am not afraid to fly whatsoever when it comes to airliners and even small aircraft with a safe pilot but you will NEVER catch me in a helicopter. @X85283

@@quibletv7558 It is definitely not more dangerous to drive a car that to fly in a helicopter. Driving is more dangerous than commercial jet flights for sure, but small planes and especially helicopters are both more dangerous than driving a car. His flat out approach was what made him exciting to watch. One can only wonder if the self preservation gene was perhaps missing? That instinct that tells most of us just to back off and be a little careful. I read about him, one evening I think in Corsica driving his Subaru on a shortcut down a railway track to get back to his hotel from a restaurant as they didn’t have enough fuel to follow the road route home. He was a brave driver yes, but you would need to be braver still to sit as passenger. I think we all still miss what he brought to the world of rallying. God rest his soul.

I remember seeing interview with one of Polish rally drivers (Krzysztof Hołowczyc), then competing in WRC. Krzysztof admired Colin and maybe they've even been friends. He told some funny stories about their conversations during the Portugal or Spain rally. Then there was a problem of spectators on the rally road. And those hot-headed guys in Spain/Portugal had a competition "who will leave road last", just before being hit by the car. So Krzysztof asked Colin what should he do when he reaches the crest and he cannot see the road because of all those people. Colin responded with something like "you should aim where there is most people. Road is there". And then added "But no worries, people are not as tough" :D Thats the sense of humor that I love + his attitude "when in doubt, flat out" and driving style. I loved the man, i still love him :(
