I loved the reaction to "Look! That's a witch!". I was staring the same way at the image, unable to see any kind of witch in it. Oh, also pro-tip: pay attention to the chairs and maybe make capture the best chairs for a compilation at the end.
If ya want, here's some (non-spoiler) fun facts about the witch Mami fought in these two episodes: Her name is Gertrude, and their title is The Rose Witch. She loves roses above anything else, and hate humans who trample them. The mustachioed cottonballs (called Anthony and/or Uncle Mustache) are familiars, who serve under her. If they become strong enough, they can break free from the witch’s labyrinth and forge their own copy of the labyrinth. Familiars can also wander into other witches’ labyrinths by mistake, and most of the time get slaughtered by the familiars of said other witch. Gertrude styles her familiars’ mustaches personally. The temperature of her rose garden labyrinth is described as cold.
It is a sadistic delight (and one that is getting rarer and rarer in this age of online osmosis and spoilers) to watch someone go into Madoka Magica completely blind
@@calicosushii I was also 11 when I first saw the show. Had no idea what I was getting myself into and It was one of like my first 10 anime I ever watched.
"Doesn't align with my interests" he says. "Doesn't align with my interests" _he says._ Oh i have never wanted to see someone eat they words so fast before.
To quote a review I once read of Madoka Magica: "Imagine that you've stuck your hand in a blender, and no matter what you do, you can't get it out. Now imagine that your family, friends, peers, are all watching you suffer, and nobody bothers to help, and you just have your hand swirling in a fucking blender. That's what this show is like."
It’s not just a Magical Girl Deconstruction it’s THE Magical Girl Deconstruction. A lot of stuff that came after was directly influenced by this. DDLC is influenced by this. When this came out it literally changed the game.
Yup. Since Madoka, so many anime have tried to do dark deconstructions of the magical girl genre, and I've seen few stick the landing. It's also easy to argue that after Madoka, we've seen a big increase in shows that incorporate the aspect of genre deconstruction, or the aspect of subverting your expectations. Re:Zero is a successful one that comes to mind.
@@Tmatogal so i literally just found this channel because i saw he did madoka and i liked the video so im watching the full play list and i completely agree with this because re zero and modaka magica are probably my favorite animes
My boyfriend told to watch it because I love Card captor Sakura, so I would love Madoka. 🫠🥲🫥 It's been a few years and I still didn't forgive him for it. I wasn't caught of guard... I was TRAUMATIZED
There is no preparing for Madoka Magica, Danny. It’s like going to a birthday party expecting a clown and Heath Ledger Joker shows up and starts killing people. It blew my mind like I put a gun to my head when I first watched it when it first aired, and every episode the caliber of gun just kept getting bigger.
Danny, keep watching. This show was what either started, or firmly solidified, the three episode rule for anime. That’s all the warning we’re giving you
finally danny is taking a break from his usual reaction material, anime about gay people, and is breaking into a whole new genre, anime about gay people
I found this show on Netflix and went in COMPLETELY BLIND, never even heard of it before. My mouth was HANGING OPEN at the end of episode three. Needless to say I’m ready for the next one
about the art style, the creators of the show didn't tell the character desingner what kind of show this was gonna be until it was done, then they asked her what was her favorite character among the ones she just finished creating was and when she pointed one the director told her, yeah, she dies first
Yellow girl's (with ribbons and muskets) name is _Mami,_ surname Tomoe. Our pink-pigtailed protagonist is Madoka, surname Kaname. "Edgy chick" is Homura, surname Akemi. Her name means "flame" in Japanese, which is why Madoka says it's a really cool name. Blue friend with fire extinguisher is Sayaka, surname Miki. Weird little Digimon is Kyubey, totally normal muppet. Third -green closeted bi- school friend going to tea ceremonies lessons is Hitomi, surname Shizuki. In the official PSP game Madoka Portable she develops a crush on "edgy chick".
OMG you're right, I've meant fire extinguisher 😂🧯 Thank you so much! Sayaka absolutely _would_ do a trick with a lighter and hairspray once she learned of it!
@@eldritchcupcakes3195 Not untrue, but Hitomi falling for very determined person focused on one goal who was friends with (one of) her friends first _twice_ is amusing to think of. She sure has a type!
To be fair about team ceremony lessons, it's actually really difficult. It's not "tea lessons" but "tea *ceremony* lessons". There are so many steps and precise movements. Samurai used to practice it because it required expert diligence and body control.
"What am I even looking at? What are YOU even looking at?? This thing isn't even animated in the same medium as you!!" -- oh man Danny's commentary is GOLD 🤣
yes yes yes Utena walked so that Madoka could run. It is THE 'shoujo that turned out to be really wild and deep (and gay)'. Idk if Danny has ever watched a show that old though.
That 3rd episode is actually my most favorite one, it really shows the full extent of my favorite character, and I’m so glad she got all the good things she wanted in the end, she’s such an amazing character that I’m sure you’ll love soon! 😊❤
"i dont need any meta commentary, in my cute but ominous anime. Alright? Ive seen how that sht played out in doki Doki" WELL BUDDY ITS GONNA GET WAY WORSE BE PREPARED
I cannot wait for him to get to episode three!!! I’m shocked that this show hasn’t been spoiled for him AT ALL but that just makes me so excited!!!!! This show really is at its greatest when you go in blind
prepare yourself for episode 3, it's gonna be a lot. Also this show when it came out managed to break the magical girl genre fatigue that had started during the decade previous and established a whole new sub-genre, there have been so many anime made after it trying to copy it and most doing a bad job at it.
@@fixsationon7244 sure but i'll spoil it for you if you want me to explain why. The anime itself has plot holes, it's incoherent and confusing at times, the story is badly written, the characters all suck and are unlikeable apart from the main villain being a decent villain and the plot twist was ok but way too predictable. The anime is just another time travel anime that's been done a million times and that whole idea of time travel is overdone garbage now. The art style it's subjective, but I think it's pretty bad. There wasn't really anything good going for the anime except that it was influential to magical girl anime, but magical girl anime also suck I hate magical girl anime so there's a subjective reason it's bad and another subjective reason it's garbage is I didn't enjoy it either. Objectively the story and characters are bad and it's full of plot holes too. Actually when you realize it' just a time travel anime then the whole anime is pretty much ruined because the only thing that made it somewhat good is the plot twist and once it's revealed then it's like yeah nothing is suspensful you know the character will just keep going back in time so no matter what happens doesn't matter anymore they can keep doing it over and over again. Takes away from any suspense the anime has, basically the equivalent of plot armour knowing the character will never die or lose because plot armour but in this case you know even if something bad happens it can be redone. The ending was absolutely terrible as well by the way. It's overrated and there was a lot of hype the anime never lived up to that also makes it worse
@@fixsationon7244 subjective is all personal opinions...you don't even know what subjective means lol... I provided both subjective and objective reasons why it's bad... I only have good taste in anime so I could give you my top 10 anime and there's nothing controversial in my top 10 because I only watch good anime. As a person who's seen over 1000 anime and been watching more than 20 years it qualifies me to have these opinions on what's good and bad where as you seem like a casual who's only seen madoka magica and probably 1 sh*tty shounen anime and call yourself an anime watcher

SPOILERS What's kind of funny to me is that in Rebellion, Anthony serves under OKTAVIA, not Gertrude. Her wiki says that she basicly disowned them or something like that and Oktavia just... picked them up lol. Poor Anthony.
@@anastasia_852 Spoiler Not quite, yeah they’re under Oktavia’s command but that’s because Gertrud sent them to take part. They’re specifically called rental versions, and the medals they wear are treasures from Gertrud.
Madoka magica has been an influence in my taste in fiction, artstyle and writing. Episode 3 is amazing, i cannot empathise that enough that you will love this show. Especially if you love mysteries
Absolutely dying. I saw this show when it was coming out and every time you said basically anything my reaction was "oh no." My man you are not ready and I'm living for it!
this was the first anime i ever watched, i fell into the illusion of the cute magical girl (I WAS 11) ... tell me about life changing pieces of media, 8 years laters im waiting for a grown man to experience the pure distress this show gave me as a child (this sounds completely insane, danny ily for watching this FR)
Honestly my favorite part of the show was easily the different animation style of the witches realm, it clashes so hard with the animation of the rest of the show that it really makes you feel how out of place these characters are in this world, it really FEELS like something that should have never been witnessed by beings from their dimension, and that is fucking sick
i like how danny immediately makes the connection between the predetory nature of the cat and the real life pedophiles/predotors that prey on children who are too niave to understand whats going on. *****implied spoilers***** But then not understanding the mustache motif lmaooo, but the meaning of the actual setting the witches are in will make more sense later.
That's something I didn't even catch even though I'm very familiar with the story, but he made that connection immediately. Magical girls, by nature of the system, are born out of trickery and manipulation. Kyubey intentionally targets young naive girls in vulnerable positions who can be molded into magical girls.
I haven't watched madoka magica in so long so as soon as he mentioned it I had to look in the comments to see if someone else spoke about it which I'm glad someone did cos it's so smart to see how they make a connection to these kind of things through kyubey
Ah, yes. Trauma: The Anime. Even knowing a good deal about what Madoka Magica was about, I was never prepared for everything that happened. Strap yourself in for the LSD roller-coaster that is this anime, it's one of my favorites but god no one comes out of this series sane.
about the...background designs. Apparently the animation studio, SHAFT, just has this thing of making backgrounds weird and ornate for no reason. So it maybe less this show is set in the future and more the staff at Shaft don't know what any room in any building looks like.
I am. So glad you're watching PMMM now. This and FMAB are my two favourite anime, you won't be disappointed. One thing, though, and I say this as a hardcore dub enjoyer: watch the sub for this one, it's way better.
I am SO EXCITED for this, i'm always looking for new Madoka reacions. Also to the people who say stuff like "wait till you get to episode x" "I can't wait for ep x". That is a spoiler, it tells him something will happen and is no longer unexpected
I mean, my understanding of tea ceremonies is that its an actual ceremony, not just drinking tea. I went to one as a child, but I don't really remember it that well. But there was definitely more to it than just drinking tea.
I love this anime and this style. It was actually pretty popular aesthetic in the late 90s/early 2000s. It’s giving Lain, The SoulTaker, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, etc.,
wow, you know of The Soul Taker... wow... another one is: Noein: To Your Other Self unfortunately, a lot of these unique art/graphic/animation style anime came out ahead of their time, and wasn't appreciated at the time, but are now, appreciated, if people actually find out about them and watch them, sighs... (Madoka obviously doesn't have that problem, being super popular and well known, but a lot of the other anime do)
16:15 BATHROOM ATTENDANT'S DOMAIN EXPANSION! 1:06 "this is the least up my alley looking show that I have ever had to cover on this series" Narrator: It was, in fact, all the way up his alley. 23:37 "... what a product!" Oh Danny, my sweet summer child. The show hasn't even STARTED yet.
I was such a naive kid that a friend told me to watch this show in Jr High with only the explanation of "Trust me", there's a reason I have trust issues 😂
Danny. Turn around. Don't go down this path. You're not ready. Make like your co-host and don't do your homework. If you continue you will become one of us. And there is no going back.
@@anastasia_852 I said it's a SUBVERSION of the usual "non-canon anime movie" formula. Do you, perchance, not know what "subversion" means in this context?
I love seeing someone react to Puella Magi Madoka Magica for the first time, it’s my favourite thing right next to seeing someone play Undertale for the first time without having seen any spoilers 😎
Please watch until the Madoka Magica movie Rebellion, there's a bunch of super cool fight scenes in that. Ps this anime traumatized me when I watched it on TV years ago
I literally jumped out of my seat when you uploaded this!! PMMM is one of my favorite animes of all time! Also Danny when you finish the main series, there's a movie called Rebellion that's a direct sequel.
Ok, so the thing about this dark subversion is, it's actually bringing back a lot of the themes that were stripped out of Sailor Moon by the countless imitators and dialling them up to 11. It defined a genre, but then that genre drifted so much that the subversion is an overcorrection back to original form. S1 ended with basically everyone dying and S2 started with the MC quietly sobbing that she still had to be a magical girl.
I dropped everything I was doing the second I saw Danny had posted this. Very bummed that he only watched the first two episodes instead the first three, but that just makes me look forward to his next Madoka video even more. Really excited to see another reactor see why Madoka Magica is such a valued show in the magical girl fandom(s). ^u^
OH MY GOODNESS YOU ACTUALLY DID IT🤯🤯🤯 THIS IS LIKE A HISTORIC EVENT!! WHAT….BRO THIS IS AMAZING YOU MUST WATCH MORE I CANT WAIT FOR YOU TO SEE EVERYTHING
