She didn't always identify as black. I don't think she ever denied it, but she always promoted her Indian heritage more, until it was more beneficial for her to promote her Jamaican heritage. When interviewers would ask or say "You're Indian" she would just confirm that yes she was, she would never say "Well my mom is Indian, but my father is from Jamaica".
